Bly Manor was wrongfully marketed as this jumpscare-galore when it was, in fact, a brilliant Gothic Horror focused more on horror as personal tragedy, and ghosts as personal demons so yeah

I think it wouldve been more realistically appreciated if Flanagan hadnt touted it as this amazing plot scarier than Hill House. Huge mistake on his part. Shouldve gone in more like Midnight Mass- the less we know the better

@@andiee4163 EXACTLY! I was disappointed in Bly at first, but upon rewatching, I kinda realized that my disappointment was more at how Bly was painted as Hill House 2.0, when it was, in reality, aiming for a completely different experience

Very true, although Hill House also focused on personal tragedy and ghosts as personal demons. This is the thread that will connect all of the seasons. Ghosts being symbolic for mental illness, guilt, trauma, addiction etc that haunt the characters

Alex Renault same, my problem with it is that it isn’t as well structured as hill house, the pacing sort of slows down someplaces and it suddenly is super fast in others, it’s not as well distributed as in hill house, which imo is because there’s many directors instead of just mike flanagan all throughout

something i really appreciated about bly was the lgbt representation, specifically dani’s journey with exploring her sexuality. the way they portrayed compulsory heterosexuality was so realistic and it really made me feel like i was seeing my struggles portrayed on screen for the first time. also, a lot of times lgbt relationships in movies/shows with non-lgbt directors can feel like they’re trying to make some sort of statement and/or patting themselves on the back for being so progressive. i never felt that way during bly and feel like they were treated like a het couple would, which also made me feel very seen. i know straight viewers wont feel this way and will view it more objectively, but from a lesbian’s perspective, its one of my favorite pieces of lgbt media.

No, I hear you loud and clear. Hill House is a better overall show, but I connected and loved the characters of Bly Manor more; Dani, Jamie, Hannah, Owen, Rebecca, Flora -- all of them were wonderful, and I saw the romance come a mile away, and yeah, as a bisexual girl, it was so nice to see such a lovely, healthy (Keyword healthy; no ugly age gaps, no dumb conflicts, etc) relationship between two women.

I was about to write this exact comment - it's literally the SECOND piece of media I've ever watched that centers a lesbian relationship and doesn't make the whole plot about 'coming out', it's a shame that one still dies though, we can never escape all the tropes 😅

Bly Manor wasn’t as scary as far conventional horror goes, but it had a lot of moments that I would call “unsettling”...it was stuff that really stuck with you after the fact. Like the whole concept of wandering the grounds of Bly until your memories faded away/being forced to relive awful memories like Peter and his mom, that’s legit disturbing to me. That’s the kind of stuff that’s more terrifying to me than a spooky ghost jump scare

my favorite favorite horror trope is when someones internal struggle is personified as a monster or ghost. that what i love so much about both hill house and bly manor. to me hill house is about grief, and bly is about guilt. i also love horror where theres a satisfying ending, the evil is defeated or whatnot. bly had a really great example of both of these things in dani's storyline. her compulsory heterosexuality and guilt over the death of her fiance haunts her everywhere she goes, and its not until shes able to let that guilt and fear go that he ghost no longer haunts her. to me horror is best when it comes with hope, we all have our own ghosts, and stories like bly manor let us know that we can beat them.

My main issue with Bly is that it was lighter than Hill House, I wasn't as involved and attached to the characters. EVERY episode of Hill House was a gut punch, I was almost crying OR crying every episode, I can't talk about aspects of it without getting choked up because it was that effective. I also really enjoyed that a lot of the main horror themes were trauma, loss and mental health. I hardly ever cry or connect with anything so it was honestly nice to be moved by media. With Bly there was only 2 episodes that hit me like that, so it was less effective, horror or not. I agree with you that 8 was the best episode too.

I started this whole thing backwards because I was late to the party. Watched bly manor after I had watched midnight mass (would love to see your take on that show if you haven’t done so already) so I really enjoyed it with no issues at all and cried a lot. I wasn’t scared, but i was really moved, it was very emotional. I like that mike Flanagan used horror as a tool to craft this gothic romance and personal tragedy instead of being like full blown horror. As for the pacing, I really don’t mind that, but that’s just another preference of mine, I enjoy taking my time to get to the bottom of things, getting to know the characters and such. People often tell me I like boring stuff but i don’t care lmao to me it isn’t boring so bly was great in my book. After bly, I watched hill house though, and was blown away! I will watch it again soon. Mostly I think I’m mainly a character-driven person, like in a story I mean, and hill house was excellent in that department and all the others.

they’re two very different styles of “horror” and i think a lot of people were expecting bly to be like hill house and while they are both a lot alike i feel bly uses a style that focuses more on personal horror and “ghosts” and tragedy along with some horror such as the story of viola and the other souls lost to the house that are riddled in the background like hill house did. however hill house wasn’t focused much on the personal horror and tragedy like bly was. personally i loved both of them in their own way and i don’t think i could pick a favorite even if i wanted to

The dolls are literally just showing where everybody is in the house at all points. They are there to let Flora know where like, the Lady of the Lake is at all times.
@xXbubbelXx
@xXbubbelXx 3 жыл бұрын
@@arletteyazmin Interesting. To me it never felt like the people could be controlled by the dolls. If I got the right scene you mentioned, the nanny only picks up the lake lady and Flora is obviously alarmed (Ep 1). Or do you mean another scene? There's even that one scene where Flora sleeps and turns around in her bed, only then the faceless boy ghost turns her doll around too - making the doll house align with the real house again. I saw the dolls only as a way to create suspense and foreshadowing. And Flora is still a kid, seeing and talking to ghosts. She might need a way to deal with it and keep track of how many beeings currently live in the house - and another way to make her feel safe because she looses trust in her talismans. Because of the scene I described before I also think the faceless ghost boy helps her to keep track and warns her whenever the lake lady goes for a walk. It's their way to communicate.

I watched it a few days after seeing Twitter reactions and I actually think it enhanced my viewing experience because I had different expectations. For that reason I'd recommend anyone who hasn't seen it yet to watch it knowing that's it's more of a slow-paced, gothic romance. I'm actually in the minority that didn't love Hill House. I liked Bly Manor more which is pretty OFF-brand considering I didn't think Hill House was scary at all. I did have pacing issues&a big problem with a certain male character. Episode 8 was also my favorite.

Completely agree with you. My expectations for Bly Manor were pretty high going into it. It was recommended to me by my best friend who is a HUGE horror fanatic. She told me it was the follow up to Hill House, but that she liked Bly Manor better. So once I finished Hill House and was completely blown away, my expectations were even higher. I was like how could anything possibly be any better than that??? And boy was I completely let down in a major way. I like to say that Hill House is horror based in drama and Bly Manor is drama based in horror. Bly Manor honestly felt like a soap opera to me.

They are both great in their own way. However, for me personally, Bly Manor feels like it has much more heart and soul put into it. It feels personal, and I was able to form strong opinions and deep connections with all of the characters. It might've not been a pure classic horror, but when you think about at the end of the day, isn't losing the people you cherish, love and care for deeply the biggest horror of it all?

Yeah Flanagan likes to put the oculus mirror in his projects. Heck in the adaptation of Doctor Sleep the mirror can be seen hanging on the wall right before I think Danny Torrence enters the colorado lounge (that room with the bar). However the mirror goes by quick.

The way that Bly Manor was treated reminds me a lot of the way that The Village was treated. People expected the same elements or level of scare from the first season. It's definitely a romance with horror themes. I can't blame people who loved Hill House for being disappointed. I'm excited to see what will happen with future seasons.

I love your channel but I really didn’t like the mindset of comparing the two despite knowing it’s a separate anthology. That’s like saying American Horror story for example (love this show too) , “oh Asylum is better than Coven because such and such “ … but are based on two ENTIRELY different premises despite using the same characters. It wouldn’t be fair to bunk one and raise the other. Just simply say you favor the straight horror/thriller aspect over the mysterious/gothic romance horror genre. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk ✍🏾

Honestly, I get that if you go into Bly Manor expecting horror, you're gonna be disappointed. But, it's such an amazing story, and I don't care that's it's romance, I actually think it's the best part of the show. We gays already get so little so, truth to be told, Bly Manor has no doubt become one of my favorite shows.

Hill house was a brilliant horror show (With one of the best horror jump scares ever, throughout T.V. and film). Bly Manor was a brilliant Gothic romance with sprinkles of horror and metaphorical demons. Also, if you want to appreciate Bly a little more, watch "The Turning", it's so very not perfectly splendid.

Very curious if you've seen Channel Zero on shudder. Its an anthology series inspired by a selection of Internet Creepypastas with four seasons. Its definitley hit or miss with most anthologies although season 3 is a huge stand out to me and one of the favorite pieces of horror I've ever consumed. It's brilliant and disturbing and I would be really interested in seeing your take on it.

I really enjoyed both. I agree Bly isn’t a horror and I don’t like typically romance but enjoy haunting romance. I loved the characters. The kids got on my nerves a bit but I was invested in all the characters. I loved the fact they brought in LGBTG love story. That made my heart happy.

I actually liked the kids in Bly, it was Dani that kept me from bingeing the whole season. The fact that she couldn't hide an emotion to save her life wore on me. Her anxiety being nearly constantly at a 10 was understandable and somewhat relatable, but it made it difficult for me to enjoy the romance at all and it didn't add any tension for me after like the 2nd episode.
