Let's talk about the removal of color customization | Halo Infinite's "Coatings" controversy

I want to talk for a bit about 343's choice to develop a new "coating system" for Halo Infinite which will leave behind the choice to personalize your spartan's color scheme. This is a choice not many are happy with and I wanted to discuss the situation.

It's quite simple; If they unbake the colour layer(s) of armour coatings and allow us to pick the colours with the coating being how the colours are laid out on our character model... people would've been ecstatic about this, instead we are in the exact opposite position because of that one decision which is clearly for the monetization model.

sounds like an idea. but you don't know if that would cause issues with the whole system and how it would bake the coating's into the game making it difficult or un-doable or if it is a monetization driven choice.

Look at what they did with halo wars practicing blitz and legendary card packs with vehicles and shit so they could add it to halo 5. They already removed all my halo reach items and put them into a battle pass in the master chief collection. That's just practice for Halo infinite. Only the smart ones know. Them not putting in the original weapons get might just be a way to hold us on the game for longer. And make us wait for the rereleases of the old weapons, like halo 5 did. I have no problem with those members leading designs but like they don't speak for everybody which would possibly lead to 343 not even listening to the competitor since the competitor is not technically everybody. To clarify, the pro can agree and want the same as everyone else in the community, but without being such a large voice, even they won't get fully listened to.

I remember the first thing I ever did when I got a halo game. I would go straight to the character customization screen. I wouldn't even touch the campaign or multiplayer until I've created my spartan. Going through each colour and seeing all the armour I had for my spartan was a blast. I just hope I can do the same in infinite.

343 seems to have a history of over designing things, choosing to make their work elaborate instead of simplistic. They also like to toot their own horn far too much, thinking everything they do is the new cool and can never be out right rejected. A lot of devs these days are borderline delusional and it frankly pisses me off.

Ugh, Halo is a such a lost series direction-wise. As a long-time Halo fan, it's so frustrating seeing the new Halo games constantly take beloved stuff away (1-50 ranks, split-screen support, etc) for seemingly no reason.

Yeah, and the alternative explanation that he gives, that they just didn't think to add this stuff in, not that they're trying to remove things, isn't any better, cause they're not things that any Halo fan would forget to add in. The only way I can see this being a good thing is if we’re able to change the coating of each piece of armour, but you’d think they’d have mentioned that by now. It’s going to be very frustrating if I can’t at least choose the visor colour separately, but it appears to not be the case.

Right now, it's sounding like the entire thing has to be paid for except for multiplayer. The main thing is that all future dlc will be 100% free microtransactions make sense for long term and from the battlepass we got there's there's decent amount of coatings. Also you can get credits for just playing the game which you then use to get the battlepass or different shaders so you don't have to buy them similar to like r6 siege.

The line about “the colors we always ran with through the years” really hit home and hard. I always use gold and blue, and I can now feel that disappointment from not being able to have your own personalization. It’s just... color choices, it’s not actually custom anymore. The more we learn about the actual "features" of Halo Infinite, the more spiteful these decisions seem. It feels like what 343 wants is to make Halo their way, put their own spin on it, but at the cost of iconic and effective elements the series once possessed. They don't seem to understand that Halo has always been a series that evolved with its community, by giving the players choices to make in almost every aspect of play.

That leaves 2 years to develop the game I would assume 5 years to plan it out. Most games by this time would be fine tuning and polishing it up. They aren’t reassuring us. Seeing as the multiplayer is going to be f2p, they're going to milk the absolute hell out of these coatings. Not only are they taking away a form of player customization, you can almost guarantee that all of the really cool coatings will cost real world money. I really don't see a situation where the player wins in this scenario, and I hate that with every main line halo game they release, they find some way to shove an ultimatum down our throats.

@@megaman37456 Halo 4 was a step down from Reach in that it removed a few aspects of customization, namely utilities, wrist add-ons, playable and customizable elites, and a firefight voice, though of course firefight also wasn't in the game. Halo 4 also had a small number of paid dlc armors. Edit: And no armor effects. Though it is worth mentioning that Halo 4 did introduce different leg armor options instead of just knees like Reach, as well as wrist armor options. More was lost than gained with 4 though, unfortunately.

It should be like rocket league customization. You can change the color primary and secondary but u can add texture like grim, rust, and plastic. Oh trust me... I'm so ready to drop this game if I have to pay for a "free-to-play" multiplayer. I'm already planning to buy halo (which apparently is only the campaign as far as I know) which means I'm being charged for the cosmetics which were always multiplayer exclusive. Previous halos featured grind and hussle. This new halo will 100% some sort of battle pass to replace the so called "reach customization". Battle passes are just timed exclusives that take the fun out of grinding since every few months is just hard grinding and not organic grinds. Believe me, i have my problems already but we'll have to wait and see. I personally can't afford to just buy stuff so yeah, halonite or fortnfinite can't get my money and I'll just discover a new game hopefully.

Okay, but hear me out. Because the colours are now baked into the skins themselves, you have REMOVED a huge amount of breadth and scope of armour, weapon and vehicle customisation options. Players would have far, far more options if even just the colours weren't pre-determined.# They say it's a a layer system of colour, materials and pattern. But if they unlinked those three they could do waayyy more in terms of customisation. You could choose the pattern you wanted, colour it how you wanted, and choose which material you wanted it with. Instead we have to find a skin (probably from a loot box or other microtransaction) that just so happens to be the colour, pattern AND material we like. This is a terrible system compared to what we had before.

As a Machinima Director, this is going to make it harder for me if I choose to make machinimas in Infinite. On top of making sure bodyactors have the right armor, I would have to worry if they have the right coating, now that its going to be acquired ingame. I would have to worry about material and colors that I have no control over due to how bright different colors are and how they could affect how I color correct, and especially for chroma keying.

I remember playing Destiny two and asking my friends, "How cool would it be if halo was open world and you could go to different places fighting covenant and shit?.." Seeing them take this kind of path in their latest title is really cool. I have a lot of concerns though... I'll start with this. An open world or relatively large scale halo game could be one of the coolest titles we've received in gaming in a long time. I can see huge potential with their concept execution and many ways they could innovate halo for the better. I think I stand with a lot of people in knowing that halo can't stay the same without backlash, but it can't change without receiving equal criticism to say the least.. Halo infinite could easily be the triple A title we've all been dreaming of. However each and every optimism we harbor for infinite comes with the same fears that came to fruition with the Bungie title Destiny 2. Let's take a minute to talk on some of the monetary tactics and poor design choices of these sort of, open world sci fi shooter titles. Warframe and Destiny 2, and Anthem are really the closest we have to speak on. I think these titles will end up having the closest relations to halo infinite that we will see upon release. Warframe doesn't need much said so we'll start with it. An amazing sci fi title that remains memorable to me even to this day. Lot's of content, and plenty to do. The game definitely has less of a grind than Destiny 2. While needing to stretch out your play time grinding for quite a few highly sought items, skins, or weapons.. It's hardly enough to complain about in a title that's entirely free of charge. To top off being free to play, a feature that makes Warframe a true innovator in a greed stricken sea of titles, Warframe's premium currency, is entirely obtainable through various methods of grinding or market selling! I personally don't think any game should have unobtainable items, currency, or content, especially if its a game you have to pay for. I don't care if I have to grind for two months to get a hat for my character, I'll do it because more often then not I don't have the kind of money to spend on virtual flexware. The gameplay is catchy and unique. While the story can feel like a bit of an understudy to the gameplay, and often quests are repeatable and gimmicky, I'd still give it an overall decent rating. Then we have Destiny 2. Destiny two was one of my favorite titles of all time when I first started playing. I shelled out full triple A price for it, and played with my friends off and on for months. The game quickly digressed into something for me that now, lands the #1 spot on my list of most unsatisfying games to play. The constant grind is cool. Looter shooters are great as your constantly getting new gear and replacing your old gear. Take borderlands for example, just an absolutely unique experience fleshed out and full of days worth of unique content to use at your hearts content. While some could say the same about Destiny 2, I find it hard to even agree to a statement as such. It's my experience that Destiny 2 is a little bit of gameplay in the center of a very clever monetization scheme. Yes I said scheme, I really wanted to put system but a scheme is what it truly is. The entire time your playing Destiny 2, your either blinded by the satisfaction of the grind, or the promise of something new. That is the game. It feels heavily designed around every intent of microtransactions. Not microtransactions in a traditional sense, but instead that of an mmorpg layered with microtransactions. Anything that would grant the player quick satisfaction or a shortcut to the metaphorical jackpot in the game has been stripped away. At some point the game even went under fire and backlash, because a user found out they were secretly throttling the amount of xp you could earn in a day. Why would any game designed around fun and keeping it's playerbase content do such a thing. I remember doing a quest to receive a legendary bow, and doing parkour searching for half an hour to find it.. Only to be prompted by a message when I found the case asking me to buy the season pass or I couldn't get it. This felt increasingly annoying because all my friends had it. The game feels like you are constantly paying and investing into it, only to receive slight increments back, if the rng is in your favor. It's like every argument against battle passes and loot boxes ever chalked up into one cleverly designed package. The only kind of people that stick around are the ones that thrive on the anticipation of a new item, and the hub, monetization and premium currency everywhere drag them under the water. The feeling of getting something new or self satisfaction, seduces you over and the game ropes you in. The same way they got me to look for the bow only to try and get me to pay after showing me other people using it and making me invest my time, is the same way they show you all the items in the store and the shader packs you could get for all your different pieces of equipment, all the legendary gear you could have, but for a price. It's like the games not in your favor, rather your always working in it's. Then we have Anthem. Anthem flopped significantly when it dropped. It sucks because I've spent a fair share in all of the games and I think Anthem had the potential to be greater than Warframe and Destiny 2. The customization was immaculate. You could have shaders, textures, and colors all customly tailored to an exact number combination. The armor and suit customization had tons of options. The dialogue seemed like it had feeling and effort. Though the hub very much reminded me of Destiny 2, there was nobody else there to hop around while developers secretly hope their legendary 5.99 golden armor entices me to get my own. The mechanics were really satisfying and world had much more depth and vitality then that of Destiny 2. But, just like in Destiny 2 and Warframe. The gameplay lacked that feeling of interaction all these games lack. The AI was terrible and even bosses felt like I was fighting my little sister. Coupled with it's horrifically unfinished state the game was doomed to fail. Now we have Halo Infinite. The game that could triumph upon all of them and show us what a truly expansive and inclusive sci fi experience could be. Next gen graphics, a brand new console, Cross play, evolutionary multiplayer, An in depth story with a more immersive feel due to tremendous open world depth and design. Infinite replayability. Halo Infinite could become the staple the franchise needs. The problem is you can't deny history and the evidence of what has previously occurred. Look at Halo 5. The team made some changes that I think were necessary for halo multiplayer. It couldn't stay the same. They just weren't perfect enough to please the fanbase all round, and I don't know if they ever will be. They introduced frightening loot box mechanics with different rarities and a way to take legendary vehicles from these packs into multiplayer games. They were already perfecting this technique with halo wars 2, which had so much potential to improve upon halo wars one. Look what happened. It's littered with characters in a strategy game that's intended to be fair, that you physically have to pay for in order to unlock their mechanics. And there was a card game called blitz that was literally a watered down version of the mechanics in Halo 5. Even if buying the characters in halo wars 2 isn't a surefire victory, there's no way to play them yourself and practice their mechanics to get to know how to win against them when fighting them. Unless you pay. Look at the disaster with the Master Chief Collection. They took away all my Halo Reach armor sets and colors, visors, effects that I grinded painstakingly for match after match, without reimbursing me, all for the implication of a battle pass mechanic for me to grind it out again. So now what..? Based on 343's previous interactions, they probably will add a battle pass to halo infinite's free to play mutliplayer. They've already practiced it. That following the history of these types of games in general. Am I going to be barred off from joining my fellow spartans on the cooler missions because of a content discrepancy. Is everyone going to flex their flame coated spartan laser on me in multiplayer because I don't have the newest expansion. This game could easily be more than the likes of all 3 of it's counterparts. If we continue to let these trends grow though we'll see a game that's more of an investment then it is an actual game. I want halo infinite to succeed, I want halo infinite to do better on every aspect in comparison to other sci fi open world shooters. If I see Halo Infinite take the downhill path of making it's players pay inadvertently for playing it in any way though, or if Halo Infinite fails to exceed any of these expectations for me. Then this game won't be worth investing even my time into over any of the previous titles. It's already started down the slope with the implementation of shaders, taking away an already existent mechanic. I can only hope this isn't part of a bigger picture of enticing players to shell out revenue. These have been my own personal thoughts and experiences based on a lifetime of gaming and debate. Personally I'm very much the opposite, but I'm trying to hold on where I can. 500 million was poured into this game which is probably going to cause everything in multiplayer to be monetized unfortunately. Maybe colors can possibly come back, but so far, everything sounds like it has to be paid for. If you know anything about battle royales, you'll know that everything is paid for. Even battle passes are artificial exclusive grinds that force people to get stuff in a limited time. You get what you want, but it's still being paid for to be earned.

I usually try my best to be positive about Halo, I genuinely love the franchise. I'm not particularly opinionated about the games because I've found something to enjoy in all of them. But man, this bites. My Spartan is green and white, almost always has been. Ever since I started playing those have been my colors. And I always appreciated now Halo implemented them, it was simple but effective enough. My Spartan looks how I want him to. When I play a game like Destiny 2, I'm never really content with how my guardian looks, and a big part of that is the shaders. Destiny doesn't have many green and white shaders, and the ones they do have are all compromised in some way. I don't like them. To think that I'm likely about to go through that again with Halo...kinda breaks my heart? Character customization is a huge part of games for me, I always want my guy to look the best he can according to my specific tastes. But now there's gonna be that compromise. And even if they do give us a super dope green and white coating, there's still the questions about color placement and materials, things probably won't be exactly how I'd want. I dunno, I wanna be hopeful, but this really does feel like a kick in the teeth.

I feel like you're giving a lot of leeway to 343 with this, you're treating 343 like they "just didn't know" that removing the ability to personalize your spartan yourself would be a bad idea. If they can't understand things that are as simplistic as that, then they shouldn't be making halo. Its kind of embarrassing how much 343 fumbles even the minor, braindead details in halo. This addition of what is essentially spartan skins seems primed for micro transactions as well, so I doubt they aren't going to do something like that. Dollars to donuts the real excuse is that they took away your ability to customize your spartan the way you want so that down the line they can sell you spartan skins. It seems like a no brainer, every time they do something new they have to add in the old version of stuff into the game via patches because people don't like the new halo weapons selection or design, and then they continue to remove the stuff people like from new halo releases and continue making new shitty weapon designs and weapon selection. It honestly makes me think 343 hates what halo was, and seriously just wants to make new halo so far removed from old halo. They keep changing things and then tosses a bone to customers saying "we do care about real halo look we made master chief look normal" or "hey we added in the classic BR to multi-player".

I don't think 343 is malicious or incompetent, although I am willing to agree that they have reliably failed at restraining themselves when it comes to art over the last decade, resulting in the weirdly inconsistent and often repulsing style we've seen. I think that's their fault. But I think terrible ideas like the coating system and the chasing of trends is all Microsoft's fault. They have a lot more power over 343 than they previously did over Bungie, and I also think 343 doesn't fight back against their corporate overlords as much as Bungie did. We need the game to release to make official judgements. This (coatings) may sound bad but actually be a great idea (I personally think it's a bad one). Do keep in mind that 500 million was poured into this game which will possibly lead to a fortnite scenario where everything has to be paid for except gameplay. I personally think a good chunk (don't know how much) of the community will leave due to halo just being multiplayer. Like previous halos always consisted of some grind in some way (i honestly can't remember halo 4 but let's say it did). If removal of the grinds just turn into TIMED battle passes, i just don't see certain people sticking to the game because battle passes can be draining since sometimes people over-grind if that makes sense.

The simple argument against skins is simple: it's a regression in game design (when compared to the other customization systems) and therefore shouldn't be done. We're here to build, _not_ to replace. This would've been fine if they *added* it to the already existing customization, but now it isn't.

@@nycto5335 that honestly would fit so well with halo and make it feel fresh, but i wouldn't mind some coatings that you cant change like Breast Cancer Awareness Coating, Sponsor/promo stuff or holiday coating like Christmas, but have some fun unique ones that are fun or some tactical ones but with the ability to change those colors to be whatever you want them to be. what i think of for these types of color changing and coating i think of how Armor Core has done it or Gundam Breaker 3/Gundam Breaker Mobile. ultimately to not have them all locked behind a paywall and to have ways of getting them that wouldn't force us to pull out the wallet to get the coats because the grind is tedious as all hell. like let me be a majestic looking spartan in the colors that i picked to have specific looks to them to stand out for cool screenshots. that way it can be as infinite as the game title.

What if when you get the armor coatings then you unlock that color/texture, so you can mix and match? This system seems like an unlockable color system rather than a full color wheel, would be kind of cool to unlock a color set and then mix parts of it with whatever colors/textures you already have on your other armor pieces. If it's implemented this way, then it could further express your character, down to the pixel. Would suck if you much prefer one color over another or something, especially seeing as this kind of is a step back for customization, but it could mean more diversity and player expression in colors by having them be unlockable, in the same way as armor sets do. *Edit: seems you already mentioned it lol*

I hope that if they do this, they’ll go down the destiny 1 route where one shader can be reused and recycled for different armor pieces. I hope they will release events that you can unlock limited time shaders or if you bear the campaign LASO you get a very rare shader like gold or diamond from call of duty. Even simpler shaders for easier accomplishments like walk 100 km or drive 100km. What I absolutely don’t want is a pay for skins method, I want it to feel like I earned that skin, like I earned that armor piece, I want to stand out with what I accomplished not what I paid for

I don't mind coatings as an option. It would provide variety. However keep the main colour system. This new system sounds interesting but my biggest concern is coating is monetizable. They can charge for it. I'd prefer to at least have to option to have a basic blue or red or green etc TLDR: is it too much to ask for both systems?

This is seriously getting more and more disappointing the more I hear about Halo Infinite. From horrible reviews from ex-343 team members to a god awful reveal trailer and now this. Microsoft needs to step in, clean house and scrap the bs 343 plans on putting in the game and fix it before it's too late but I doubt that's going to happen. I'm waiting for the reviews after release and if the game is still in an awful state I'll most likely skip Xbox this generation.

Either a post-launch introduction of a color-wheel system (like Eldewrito?) or your solution of mix and matching armor coating pieces would work to satisfy all. We'd be able to customize our colors like normal, but 343i would still be able to honor those brand deals and such that they've already made.

I don’t see why they wouldn’t have made the coatings as a pure dlc buy in that either allows you to change where the secondary color is placed on the armor, or else as a third color changable option like the armor stripes in Halo 3. They could charge 99¢ for an optional “third color” and keep primary and secondary colors and it would probably be more profitable to them since they’d potentially get players who wouldn’t otherwise care to buy into it
