@Craig Hebert I got ran around a shop for about a half hour looking for a metal stretcher one day. I was like WTF is that??? He said go to the tool cage, Deon will know what it is ... Deon sent me way to the back, they sent me way up front, those guys said it was in the paint department, paint department said they sent it back to the tool shack ... then the tool shack guy points to this huge chunk of metal with rollers on the floor ... so I bring it back to my fitter and ... "Oh, I don't need it anymore, take it back to the tool shed" Those guys were DYING laughing at me! All I could say was ... "You mfkers ..."

The way you figure it out is like this you take the total amps available in the gear say third gear is 100 amps - so if third gear starts at 100 amps and tops out at 200 amps then when u set ur machine at 3rd gear and 45 - for you to know how many amps you are putting in your work you take the lowest amperage in that gear and add 45% of the available amperage in that gear - so 3rd gear (if it goes from 100 amps to 200 amps) would be 100 amps plus 45% of the available range - which in this case Is 45 amps - so the total amperage would be 145 amps.
@robertpilkinton62314 жыл бұрын
This is how I figured it to be. 190A-120A(gears)=70A, so you have a 70 amp range. 70A/100(points of fine tune)=0.70A, so a single “notch” on you fine tune is 0.70A. 45(of fine tune)x0.70A(per single notch of fine tune)=31.5A 120A(stating point of third gear)+31.5A=151.5A(total of working amperage) So 3rd gear and 45 is 151.5 Amps. Let me know what you think. Thanks! Cole.

How I figured those types of dials on machines like that work are that the"gears" as you call them have the amperage range, and the fine current dial is the percentage of the range is used. For example: if third gear's range is 120-190 and you are set on 50, that means that you are using 50% of the current range, so you would be at about 155 amps.

190 - 120 = 70 (the 3rd gear range is 70 amps.) 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7 amps per fine adjustment ( in 3rd gear) 0.7 × 45 = 31.5 & 120 + 31.5 = 151.5 Amps.

The gear knob is amps, and the fine adjustment knob is voltage, kinda the same as a miller pipe pro the gear knob is the amp adjustment knob and the fine adjustment knob is the little dig knob on the miller. The only difference is that inverter machines once you adjust your volts/dig it stays the same no matter what what amps you have set, on generator machines if you go up in volts the amps will tend to go up too. 4th gear 40 is the same as 3rd gear 70, just that 4th gear 40 will have lower volts less splatter and will dig more
@chrisrenaud41416 жыл бұрын
Gearing is amps and the other knob is volts, voltage increase makes the puddle more fluid or "soft" low volts and higher amps makes the puddle more crisp, the arc force or "dig" function on modern inverters sometimes you see a knob that says chrisp or soft is also a voltage adjustment. Arc length is also a voltage adjustment, longer arc higher volts tighter arc lower volts, when your in say 3rd gear it gives you an amperage range.. that range is the motor speed full throttle would be max amps for that gearing, at least i think this is how it is, i'm not an expert on the generator welders, I usually weld 220v powered welders.
@peetky86454 жыл бұрын
no . both knobs are amps. you add them together to know what you're output is. dig / arc force/ inductance have nothing to do with amps or volts. they are a characteristic of the arc manipulated separate from amps or volts.

i think the fine current is a percentage of the difference in the coarse current gear. thus 3rd gear is 120 to190a. 190 minus 120 is 70. 70/100 is the coarse difference divided by the # divisions in the fine adjustment knob= 0.7a/ hash on the fine knob. So, in third gear w/ 10 fine would be 120a plus 10x0.7 = 127a. third gear plus 60 fine = 120 plus 60x0.7 = 120+42=162. fifth gear plus 60 fine = 220+(60x0.8)= 220+48 = 268amp 1st 20-90a fine is 70/100a=0.7amp/hash 2nd 80-130a fine is 50/100a=0.5amp/hash 3rd 120-190a fine is 70/100a=0.7amp/hash 4th 160-240a fine is 0.8amp/hash 5th 220-300a fine is 0.8amp/hash these numbers would change with bigger or smaller machines because the coarse range differ

Hey there Jacob, Damien here from Alberta.. I really enjoy your videos you make, good show. Knowing your amps on these machines is all about percentages, for example... 3rd gear at 45... so you're at 120-190 on the coarse and 45 on the fine. 120-190 is a difference of 70 and 45 is a percentage of that. So, 45% x 70 = 31.5... so there for 120 + 31.5 = 151.5. You're at 151 amps give or take. With these it's all about knowing your puddle and then you just get used to knowing where you are at on the machine for the size of rod you're burning. I've got a 2001 Classic 300D and a 2011 SAE 300, awesome machines. Be blessed ; )

The gears are the range/amps the right nob fine current is actually voltage and a percentage of the range/amps/gear setting. For XX10/XX11 rods run the voltage a little higher while the inverse is better on LH settings.
@dannyharvey56237 жыл бұрын
It has been a while but the way it was explained to me is 120 to 190 has 70 amps range. Fine current is 0 to 100 so setting of 45 is 45% added to 120. 3rd gear 45 ~ 150 amps?
@theviper66025 жыл бұрын
Example 3rd gear on my short hood is 200 I do 200×45% gives you the amps or general idea that is every machine is different. So just times your fine adjustment as a percentage.

Think of the dials as voltage and amp control. Your not just controlling the amps buts also the voltage. That’s why/how you can stack more metal/burn the rod faster but not hotter. I’ve been meaning to get an “amp clamp” to see what kind of amps I’m actually putting out... one day some day!

Here's the mathematical formula for this: ((Percent * (max-min)/100)+min = Expected Amperage Output Percent is the number your fine current adjustment selector is set on. Min and Max are the bottom and top values in your current range selector ('gear'). Reality is: every machine will be different and it's up to the operator to know how their machine behaves. Try the formula with your machine; odds are the math and the machine won't match; probably close, but won't match. Compare to a friends machine using the formula vs reality; most likely they'll be different.

To add to what you said about different machines running different. People with different levels of experience are going to be on different settings. Yeah cuz at 7 minutes different model machines.. 90% of the time the large amperage selector on the left.. each gear as you call it will have different amperage maximum and minimum... there are so many things that can be variable... the length and size of your welding cable.. also the length and diameter of your ground cable... if you have other power sources drawing off your welding machine while you are welding... the number of tweco connections.. between the posts on the welding machine.. and your stinger.. so an experienced welder knows what you're trying to get at and knows that you don't have a clue!!! LOL.. and any inexperienced welder is scratching his head... I don't know everything!! But I've been welding for 40 years.. and I'll never understand why you guys lug those huge machines around and rarely use half the amperage.. capacity..?? It's kind of like the song says.. I bought a Lamborghini but I can't get it out of second gear.. LOL !! I've used hundreds of different machines.. and with that machine.. you can run 3/32 innershield.. anyway to make a long story short.... the one major thing I want to say to a young person like you.. is """""wear a personal respiration device of some kind..!!!!!!!""""" Good luck and stay safe brother

These are how HE runs it. Buy a machine, a 20’ stick of 4”-6” pipe, cut yourself some coupons and burn rods till you get a beauty queen. Then, just try to duplicate that over and over. Becoming a pipe welder takes a few hundred bucks for consumables and 6-7 hrs of practice. Being successful at it takes YEARS! Do the above mentioned steps while you’re working as a helper and you’ll breakout in no time and be in the money.

So each gear just makes it dig more and makes the puddle more wet?
@peetky86454 жыл бұрын
no. each coarse adjustment "gear" is a Tap in the generator that has a prescribed range. the fine adjustment is a % of each coarse range which is added to the output amperage. wetting of the puddle is a function of "inductance" or "dig" which was produced mechanically in the old days by wrapping the output current around an big iron bar. i don't think these machines have variable inductance or adjustable dig. the dig makes the output softer or harsher and the puddle stiffer or wetter.

I HATE those machines with "gears" and I can't stand it when people tell you their settings in gears / percent - because the taps aren't all in the same amp rangees for one - but mostly because I was stuck on this piece of shit esab mig machine once, that had 5 voltage taps, and no fine control. So you're stuck with nothing but wire speed to control it, and you're now stuck moving at a speed machine likes too. After that job, I never EVER wanted to see another machine where the settings had taps. Now that I'm looking - the fine control on that machine also sets OCV? So if you go say - 2nd gear 100, then go to 3rd gear 10 - you just changed the arc characteristics by a good bit with the same amps, but it's one or the other - but if you're 3rd gear 50 - you can't change the arc characteristics. Hell, the first old dinosaur box I had was from the 70's and even it was infinitely adjustable through its range.
