I grew up in a Mennonite church and as a teenager I really wished we sang songs other than hymns. I no longer go to a Mennonite church and there's nothing more I miss now than singing hymns during service.

Loved the topics of discussion. I was raised in a very strict Brethren home in which most things were not to be done-no movies, no tv, no immodest dress, no dancing, etc. Everything seemed to be negative. As I grew older, I was directed in many ways, but always read the Bible. I am now in a church where we sing choruses and hymns as the Holy Spirit directs. We raise our hands to God in worship as we sing to Him. We say amen when the minister says something that strikes a chord with our spirit. The minister appreciates feedback. We are able to give testimonies as to what the Lord has done in our lives. We have alter time and prayer for healing. I am happy in my corporate worship. The best thing is to prepare yourself for worship with Bible reading, prayer, and meditation during the week so you are ready to receive the message from the minister. Thank God that the Holy Spirit is alive and lives within the lives of believers! Glory to God for His goodness! As for Asbury-I think it is great that the young people are being drawn to to God. Don't point fingers. Allow God to have control! Thank you, Jesus!

I’m a youth leader and went to Asbury with a friend. It was SO encouraging of doing ministry with them. He spoke so clearly to me while being there how much he loves this generation and when people are humble and in repentance I believe the Lord is like YES!!! Now let’s get to work!

My take on Asbury...If Jesus said it, I believe it...He told us there would be great revival near the end times...one more promise fulfilled. If it lead one single person that repented and gave their heart to God it was well worth the news.. No one gets to decide how a Christian should worship...we attend a Mennonite church , not Mennonites, but the first church that allowed my husband to bring his service dog in...were a bit leery at first as to their take on military service...(daughter, wife and mother of Soldiers and Marines) but the most welcoming and caring. As to singing...I feel so close to God when singing and when in the mountains a few times a year..

If you want "conviction" (not a phrase my denomination uses) on a principle, you are called to act upon it- study it out, pray, seek the Spirit. Do something, not do the opposite and hope for the best.

Our church has an awesome band, and a lot of members will put their hands up. Some people will sway, and others will just stand and listen. There is no one way to do it, but that's what I love. The songs can be so moving and really prepare your heart for the coming message.

I love your perspective on revivial and knowing how you guys worship. I grew up and still attend a very charismatic church with My husband. My husband is a church drummer and I sing, but in the past 3 years we have changed our thoughts on things. We don't like every worship song, repeating is fine but many songs extend their songs for unnecessary reasons and makes for a very emotionally driven song. We also believe there should be more time for the word of God not just singing for almost the whole service.

I'm in a reformed church that is very picky about worship songs. There are hymns and and worship songs mixed together. There is definitely hand raising and clapping. I grew up in churches in that raised our hands in a "surrender" kind of position towards the Lord and I think it's such a beautiful way to focus on Him throughout singing truth and praises!

I came from a very charismatic church, to now a baptist church and I honestly love the more serious tone, my husband and I are feeling God moving us to even more strict lives and looking to visit a conservative mennonite church soon. I feel that churches lack discernment and disclepleship and there needs to be more order in the church. That's one of the things I loved about your channel it felt different and encouraged me.

I agree. I am of a Reformed Baptist bent. There are two churches in our town, the Pentecostals and the Baptist. We were cautious one of the other, the Baptist's being very conservative and the other very charismatic and passionate. Come covid in my community when churches were closed for a long time and people ceased gathering, a group of Christians who felt convicted to continue to gather got together in a house church...Christians from both the Baptist and Pentecostal church tentatively came together in this church group. Wild. When it came down to the bare bones, we both believed THE SAME GOSPEL. We repented of our sin and trusted alone in the Saviour Jesus Christ. Something beautiful happened in this house church where the Reformed Baptist's diligent reverence and upholding of the Word of God, Sola Scriptura, discernment and accuracy joined with the Pentecostal's passion and spirit and Christian love and service. What an eye opener. Beautiful, just beautiful.

🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 was raised Pentecostal. Very modest dress, long hair, non-cut hair. As far as worship, music yes!!! It’s so liberating. It’s freedom to actually feel the presence of God. To actual react to God. Raising your hands is a gesture that you lift him up, you adore him, you feeling the anointing of God. Some people raise hands, some cry(happy tears if feeling love, that Jesus died for our sins) his Grace is for everyone! We have amazing worship music, which opens the door to letting God into your heart. You could try it in your home, in private to not let pride as humans. Never be ashamed of Gods love 💗 🙏🏼🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

At my church, we have modern music with occasional hymns as the Holy Spirit leads. Worship is such a beautiful act and expression of love for God and all He is and does for His children. I think about the woman with alabaster flask breaking it at Jesus’ feet and David dancing before the ark of the covenant. How beautiful and freeing to worship Jesus in Spirit and in truth. Loving God with all our soul, might, strength. It’s never about culture or what others do in worship but it’s such a personal expression of love and value to God. There are so many meanings of worship and praise in the Hebrew and most of them are about physical postures. He loves to seek and find worshipers. It’s all about the expression of our love and giving Him glory, whatever that looks like for each of us since our relationship with Jesus is so unique. 😊

To be fair, not all Christ followers are “religious”! 😊 I grew up in a very religious setting (Lutheran, which is a step down from Catholicism), but now at 30 yo I desire a RELATIONSHIP with the Lord, not just attending church, checking all my boxes and calling it good for the week. To me, faith and relationship are more important than religion, because religion is most often words of man and relationship cannot be measured by man. I spend my time talking to the Lord, reading His Word and connecting with like-minded believers. I also study other religions with my husband. I believe every religion has a facet of the Truth, but it can only be brought together into wholeness with Christ at the center. (And I want to add that I hope this all doesn’t come across as judgemental; text can be deceiving sometimes. I loved reading your comments and wanted to respond in kind!) I appreciate you ladies’ open-mindedness in following Megan’s channel; she is a bright spot in this world of KZbin!

​@@WS-by5cl totally agree that people being "religious" aren't always spiritual. My mother-in-law repeatedly says that her religion tells her what to do. That makes me sad because it shows a sense of legalism instead a true reverence for a relationship with her higher power. For me, I don't have a need of religion and I feel like there are a lot of people like me out there. The two main reasons for that is: 1. If one religion is the "true" and right religion, that means all the others are wrong. 2. I have a hard time believing in a book that was written by men, when we have evidence that runs counter to science. Jesus may have been a real person, like Joseph Smith (Mormon "prophet"), but I feel the same way about both of them...just men who were able to convince people of their stories. That said, I'm not here to blast anyone who is Christian or any other religion. I just don't want to live in a place where laws are written with a religious ideation that impact everyone who may or many not subscribe to that religion.

My takeaway regarding revival is having a hunger and deep desire to know more about God and His word which is the ultimate condition we desperately need. So thankful for this outpouring. I pray, " Lord Jesus, bring it on." His presence is so beautiful and so needed right now. I saw some clips of a Holyghost outpouring and people being baptized in a hotel swimming pool. I am so thankful.

I'm loving the Asbury revival. I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and we don't do the hand waving or swaying during our worship services either. I have recently been to some events for Christian women, though, where people from dozens of different religions come together and worship Him and I have to say, there is a powerful spirit there that makes me want to wave my arms and sway to the music. One good thing that has come from this massive trend in individuality is the appreciation for the different ways in which we seek Him. I think you guys are wonderful and I love that you talk openly about the Bible. I love what you believe. It's different in some ways from what I believe, but in the end we are all just trying to be like Him.

And our congregations don’t have bands. Just piano/organ hymn singing. We have the sacrament every week. We don’t even have a pastor that speaks. Members of the congregation are asked to speak ahead of time (even teenagers). One recent change is kids as young as 8 can say the opening/closing prayers, whereas before only adults did.

I love the face you made at 14:03 Jayna! I completely understand how you feel. I grew up in a reformed church in The Netherlands which is very similar in the sense that it is very stoic and no real outward emotions. You stay in your seat and you keep quiet and you sing what you are supposed to. We used to sing psalms. I am now living in Sweden and those type of churches do not exist here so I have started attending a much more charismatic church but I still feel nowhere near ready to lift my hands even though most other people do it. I think if you don’t grow up that way it is very hard to get used it and to feel comfortable with worshipping that way

Hey Megan and Janna (spelling?) I’m an older lady who finds your podcast refreshing. I completely agree with you as far as Asberry. We should not be pointing fingers and criticizing. If God is in the middle of it then go God!!! How desperately young people need some authenticity and guidance and Jesus 🧡 Thank you for being a voice for them and reminding us older folks that He is STILL working. always!!! Added: I’m actually a bass player on my worship team. Our music is pretty rousing most of the time, though we have a lot of reverent quiet things too… There’s a lot of passion. That's nice - but why just in Summer, and why did it need to be 'scheduled' like that? Was the Holy Spirit expected to work when your Church felt it was appropriate? To be meaningful you'd expect to see it's influence on future behaviour. I fully believe in setting aside time to have some extra services for teaching - and not just at Easter or Christmas which are often aimed at evangelising non-believers - but I wouldn't label them 'revival' and it smacks of a theatricality which I find emotionally manipulative.

My Mennonite Church had an "Amen Corner", a group of benches up front near the pulpit where men would sit and murmur affirmative "Amens". I also have conversations about worship response with my dad's generation. They say, "I am joyful on the inside." I respond, "Well, tell your face!"

1 Timothy 2:8 - the Apostle Paul encourages us to lift up Holy hands unto HIM in Worship! There's nothing better, and nothing sweeter than to stand in HIS Presence wether in private Worship or church Worship feeling HIS Presence and lifting Holy Hands to HIM. It's then that the Holy Spirit graces us with HIS Presence, when we worship HIM in Spirit and in Truth. If we remain true to the WORD (the Bible) then we please the LORD!

Megan, I just wanted to remind you, when you said "and making sure God is still pleased with us and we can get into Heaven" that is an attempt at a works-based "salvation". God is pleased with us only because the blood of the Lamb has washed us pure and clean from the stains of our sin. We can only "get into Heaven" because when we stand before God on judgement day, Jesus is standing in our place. Remember, Isaiah 64:6 "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags". It's not because of the lines we do or don't cross like you were saying that we do or don't "get to go to heaven." It's only by the blood of the lamb. I'm not discrediting that our faith bears fruit, but our fruit doesn't save us. Jesus does. Something else I wanted to point out is just there seems to be a little bit of a double standard as far as what has to be simple, as far as simplicity being a biblical standard. I don't feel that the Bible calls us to be simple, but it does call us to be good stewards of what we are given. To be prudent, wise, humble, and generous So on one hand, that's the argument for a simple wedding, but on the other hand getting a smeg toaster or coffee machine or a fancy car or expensive home are all okay. None of those things are bad. All of those are blessings from God, as is every good gift. I just see a bit of a double standard there in the Mennonite world. As far as head coverings, when looking into the original language and root words some Christians like myself believe that the husband is the head and "covering" of the wife, as well as her physical hair. Phylicia Masonheimer has a good podcast episode on her Verity podcast about head coverings. I totally respect your conviction on the issue, but I also do not have that conviction and don't translate those passages the same way that you do. I'm not changing truth or watering down the word of God, just maybe viewing it in a slightly different lens. It was very helpful to me to learn about what is Core doctrine. The virgin birth, deity of Jesus, sinless life, death, resurrection and the sexual ethic are all core doctrinal issues. We must unite around them. Then there are second and third tier issues. People come away with different opinions on many different things, and it doesn't mean that they aren't living in truth. It means scripture isn't necessarily as clear in the original languages as it can seem at face value on certain issues. My point here is that you can be a Christian who loves the Lord, Truth, and follows Biblical principles without necessarily wearing a head covering.

@@marseillestephenson1984 I think what she is saying is our works cannot save us only belief in Jesus and what he did for us on the cross has the power to save there is nothing we can physically do that saves us. Now when we believe in Jesus and follow him we should bear “fruit” or works but that isn’t what saves us the blood of Jesus and only that can cover sin.

I was raised Roman Catholic and we NEVER raised our hands in church. It was extremely rigid and very traditional with only an organ and choir. It was weird when we clapped in church for the occasional celebration. Now I go to a non-demoninational Christian church and LOVE IT. The music is fantastic and inspiring. I feel the Holy Spirit almost every service and quite a few people do raise their hands in the air. I rarely do, just because I am still not used to it, though sometimes I want to! We clap all the time for different things. It is a much more modern way than I was raised, but I connect with Jesus so much more now than I did being a Catholic. I hope that sheds some light on how different churches do things!

I want to give a different perspective on being Catholic. I converted to the Catholic church by way of a Catholic charismatic group. I had never seen anyone worship in such a genuine way before meeting these Catholics, especially when the worship meeting had Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament too. In the Church, I love how we can worship in very traditional ways and charismatic ways. I'm sorry you had only one experience of worship.

Eastern Orthodox we mainly use the Liturgy written by St.John Chrysostom in the 4th century. I love it because every Sunday I get to enter into the prayers prayed by Christians for over a thousand years.

I grew up Catholic and it's extremely reverent. Now I go to a Bible church and we do modern music and hymns in all of our services. We are a very small church so for modern music our worship leader sings on the mix and we have the tracks playing on the speakers for us to follow along with. For the hymns our worship leader plays the piano and her husband sings and conducts us on the mic. I love it so much. Some people say, some people raise hands, some people are stoic. I grew up dancing so I'm usually swaying taping my feet, and just worship God and do t worry about the people around me. Praise the Lord for that because I could not have done that growing up. I love that we have the little kids go up after the first few songs wherever pastor directs 10 minutes to them before they go downstairs for the kids church. I just love my church so much. The gospel is preached at every sermon, it's a very diverse community but we all believe that Jesus is our lord and savior. The battle is Lord's. He will have the victory. He is the truth! I just want to say thank you for this video. It is my favorite by far. It is so refreshing to me to hear a perspective that is encouraging and thankful for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, conviction of sin, drawing people to Christ at the revival. I grew up in a Christian family, not Mennonite, non-denominational. I've been to a variety of churches but my husband and I worship the Lord and raise our hands in worship when we feel led. We have been to Pentecostal churches where we fit right in (and a few times when we were the "quiet" ones lol), and some super conservative churches where we actually became an active part of the community and fully accepted, but were the only people who raised our hands. I just really believe in worshiping the Lord fully. I try my best to block out everyone around me and just worship the Lord, body mind and soul (without being disruptive). I also personally do cover my hair based on 1 Corinthians 11, but actually have never been to another church where any others cover their hair, nor was I raised by a family who taught me to. I do believe it is clearly commanded in scripture, and not a cultural issue. Been covering my hair for 8 years now. When asked I always respond, "it's a personal conviction based on 1 Corinthians 11." HOWEVER, based on this conversation, I have been convicted. The first part of my response "it's a personal conviction," is, I now believe, a cop out, very similarly to how you said you might say, "it's a part of our culture." I have been revived in my relationship with God at different times in my life & it has drawn me closer to God’s word & prayer. I saw God move in my life & my friends’s life too. I think they happened at critical times in my life. It was an experience I would not trade for anything & it kept me walking in the spirit. Keep asking God to move in your circles. I believe in being kind and respectful to all people and showing them how much I care about them as a person - as my brothers and sisters as best I can. I'm sure I make tons of mistakes, but I don't ever want to purposely insult or make someone feel bad in any way. And service in whatever way fits my circumstances at the time.

Really really really enjoyed this discussion and find in some things I'm still trying to work out the way God wants me to live my life. The more I hear people pushing their "own truth" the more convicted I am that we take God's word as it is, we don't try and change it and adapt it to a modern way of thinking and we use the bible as our filter for life - running everything we do through it to see if it lives up with God's word. I don't think it hurts for us to question things sometimes, and as you both found, it can reinforce your convictions in the end. Thanks for the great conversation 🕊

Fun discussion, as always! I grew up Baptist/Methodist where worship meant singing and occasionally someone might lift their hands but rarely. I now attend a Pentecostal church where worship often takes over the whole service. A lot of dancing, running, emotions, speaking in tongues, etc. Very different and still something I’m adjusting to since I didn’t grow up that way. But truly, I find all worship beautiful!

A few things off the top of my head- practice of the headcovering, historically Mennonites are not involved in politics, in my experience we are more open to certain methods of family planning. I haven't read her book yet, but I plan to soon.

100% agree with you about the conviction part. I don’t think it’s okay when someone says “I don’t feel a conviction to do so and so” when it’s clearly in the Bible. Also agree with your take on the whole thing about giving the answer “it’s cultural” when asked about about a biblical practice. Totally true that the WAY we practice the teaching may be cultural, but the actual practice is not. It’s biblical.

At my church, we follow the same style of worship each Sunday: introduction and any news on the church bulletin, 3 hymns, 5-10 minutes of children's church, the main sermon, benediction song, and then any praise reports/prayer requests. Our preacher encourages us to really listen to the meaning of the songs and not just mouth the words, as well as getting the congregation to say "Amen" to certain points. I feel that even though we follow the same pattern (which is out of tradition), worship is still meaningful and new each time. I loved Jayna's analogy on counterfeit money. I had never thought of it that way, but I want to remember to pass that on to my kids and others in my life. On a similar note, our preacher tells us each Sunday to always "run it through the filter of the Bible," to determine for ourselves if something is right or wrong in God's eyes. As always, you girls give the best advice. Keep "Honey I'm Homemaker" videos coming please!

Our church does a mix of everything to connect the older and younger generation through worship music. Some Sundays are the older hymns with a blue grass band, some are older worship songs, and some have a mix of today’s music (Phil Wickam, Sovereign Grace Music, etc). Worship is so powerful and I love feeling the Holy Spirit move 🎶 I really like how our church does worship songs that everyone can like or relate to.

Anything “best”, not favorite, because that is different. “Favorite” brings you joy, sometimes “best” brings you insight, fortitude, empathy, patience, heartbreak, but all serve God’s Plan so are worthy to share. Very interesting discussion! It touched the subject of orthodoxy (focus on what you believe) versus orthopraxy (focus on what you do). I don't think there is any single faith that is totally one or the other but they're usually a bit more one or the other. As a non-christian in a rather secular country (Sweden) I've been taught that Christianity is about what you believe but something like Judaism is a bit more focused on what you do (like eating kosher etc). But it's not that black and white. And I think that might explain how some people can define themselves as Christians but behave in a manner that doesn't really reflect their faith. I hope that makes sense.

I really love the message that you are bringing. How about asking guests that are from different religious sects, say, someone from an apostolic sect? O even someone who isn't christian altogether? I think that you might find a lot of commonality with these people. Plus, if you are getting bored with the opening segement, you could write down a list of topics, like recipes and household tips, put all these ideas into a basket or hat, and then each episode pull one out and answer it. Some other topics could a lesson you regret not learning sooner, a parenting hack that you want to share, or lessons you are grateful to have learned from your parents, etc.

Commenting on the JV book. The problem is committing ourselves to men's opinions rather than seeking God through His Word for themselves. Mennonite is definitely a religion. It is named after a man. You are right if you study the Word without a prejudice of how you are taught by men and totally open your mind and heart to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to be your teacher. Stay away from books and teachers and seek God for Truth. I have had to do this and Wow, I have I learned how my beliefs were based on men's opinions even though I faithfully read my Bible. You are so right on parenting. If any man lack wisdom let him ask of GOD.

We attend a Free Methodist church, and there’s a full band. We have a mix of newer songs and old hymns. Lots of the congregation are very expressive, one signs the words in ASL, some remove shoes and are very outgoing with their worship, and most just stand and occasionally raise their hands. We have a great mix and no judgment, all Holy Spirit led🤍

Old woman here… one that loves Jesus and has a personal relationship with Him. I think The HolySpirit draws us in different ways into worship. I think different things work for us in individual ways whether it is with meaningful hymns or contemporary Christian music….focusing on Him is what leads us. No matter what anyone else thinks. P.S. Stumbled across your podcast by accident. I was raised in a little Methodist church came to Jesus at church camp in the 60s grew through Campus Crusade through out my college experience. Taught reading in two little Amish schools within a county school system. Married a Mennonite guy, and now a part of a Grace Brethern church where we raised our children. Our church is pretty big about 2000 members. So we have 2 buildings. One is the sanctuary with all hymns and an organ. The fellowship hall is more contemporary with guitar, and piano. There is usually about a couple with hands up and people are reverent, but joyful.

How we worship: my family are traditional southern missionary Baptists and we live in rural East Tennessee. My husband and I got to a more traditional "old timey" church. We sing the old hymns, have a piano and some acoustic guitars. When we sing, some shout "amen" and "Praise the Lord". And our pastor does preach like a traditional mountain preacher. He shouts often. But, we do not believe in speaking in tongues or running in the sanctuary. The way we were raised, the service can get loud, but we are also to be mindful of not distracting others.

I'm Jewish and our Synagogue does worship accapela occasionally we have a tambourine but usually it's one person who does it. I've gone to several churches and synagogues but I really dislike the worship team types of worship where it's almost like a concert, one synagogue i grew up in has the worship team off to the side and your main focus was on the Torah which was up on stage so it felt more appropriate to what we were doing. My current synagogue usually has 5-6 people who do the torah/worship service and each member takes a turn singing songs or saying blessings which I love.

I grew up conservative Mennonite and we were very stoic when worshiping.We now attend an Assembly of God church and it’s kind of a combination of baptist with a bit of Pentecostal. We have instruments and a worship team that is wonderful. I wish we sang more of the old hymns but I’m learning to like some of the newer ones. Some Sundays we continue with the worship music and never get to the sermon, we follow where the Holy Spirit leads ! I’m not used to raising the arms and being very vocal but it happens when the spirit leads. I do not like using denominational names I prefer to believe that we are the church body, and our guide to living a Christ like life is in the Bible therefore we are Christians🙏🏼🥰

Not having a sermon is a bit worrying - teaching should never be squeezed out like that as it is of the most importance to our growth as Christians. it's important to remember that the whole service is our worship to God - not just the singing !

We have a small worship band and we sing a mix of hymns and current music. Some people raise their hands or sway. I'm a swayer. There have been multiple times the Holy Spirit has taken over the service. One time our Pastor couldn't even finish preaching what he planned to and just started doing what the Spirit led him to do.
