Fascinating! Dynamics of conversations and body language do change from culture to culture, in my experience. In Dublin, my Japanese friends found simultaneous feedback distracting and interpreted it as not listening. They use subtle visual cues, like nodding and silence, to signal active listening. In Mexico, group consensus and collective feelings are prioritized over individual opinions or efficacy. One-on-one conversations allow for more personal expression and humor. Moving from Mexico City to live in the countryside, I learned that greeting everyone might draw unwanted attention; a more reserved demeanor is safer. In Madrid, having dinner at the restaurant of some good friends of a good friend I was visiting, suddenly turned into conflict because I was using please and thank you too much. In Ireland, - complete opposites on this particular point -, it would have been appropriate. I was trying to be polite and gracious - what a disaster. 19-year-old me was upset (I had no idea what I'd done!), my friend was upset, her friends were upset. I had come across as arrogant and stand-offish to the extreme.
