I'm tired of "influencers" pretending that we're friends just to shill something to me. At some point, I genuinely believe that the government needs to put a cap on advertisements on the internet because right now just there's just too much.

The problem with live shopping (learned a new word here) I see is that you can't touch the items. You don't know if that "cute shirt" is scratchy and the seams already come undone, you don't know if you hate or love the smell of that perfect skincare cream, you don't know how you feet feel in those must-have shoes. It also seems to be marketed a LOT towards women who feel they must "keep up" with others, so young women in probably not-very-stable financial situations.

Yes, but it still give you a easy way of shopping, you dont have to appear to offline store to buy them. In the midst of people trying to be as productive as ever, these live shopping, online shopping help them to buy as fast as possible with as low effort as possible, i always buy things online, yes, some are bad quality, but still i try to be mindfull of my spending and learn what to do before buying things, but again as a individual i dont really like to buy without put them first in the wishlist to evaluate them

I have a credit card that it's only purpose is for when i need to take my car in. I can legit only use it at the mechanic i go to it's from the mechanic company so i legit couldn't use it elsewhere if i wanted to and as someone who struggles financially it's a life saver when i get a flat or need to take the car in.

I never save my debit card info for online buying. So every time I want to buy something online I have to find my card, the codes, fill in the boxes. Now I am a lazy , and I mean LAZY!, person. So when I have to fill in my info I rethink if I even need the item. Cause I hate having to fill the info.

It's insane, live shopping has always been a scam, they urge you to buy things at "discounted price" because there are limited quantities, meanwhile you can buy the same thing from the same brand for cheaper with no discount. That's how it was on TV in the 2000s and that's still how it works. I don't get why people keep falling for it!!

Wow that Skymall reference really took me back to the days when I naively thought the internet would make advertising obsolete because now we can look up anything we need, we don’t need it advertised to us. I’m sorry who this may offend but that’s why I always looked down on marketing as a profession and was disdainful of how much money could be made in such middleman service roles. That’s why I agree, consumption is not the problem - it’s the advertising industry getting us to buy stuff we neither want or need by preying on our primal instincts.

The entire marketing industry exists to exploit mental heuristics, over which people have incredibly little control because they are tied to biological survival drives, in order to get you to buy. They are actively working at all times to bypass your impulse control. People have PHDs in psychology and they deploy all of their expertise, time, and effort against the problem of getting you to keep buying when almost all of their target audience (people with money to spend) have more than they could possibly need. So while they aren't the whole problem, yes, they are predatory, and yes, they are a *big* part of the problem.@@9an13l

So i thankfully haven't been sucked into massive hauls on amazon/temu ect or live shopping on tiktok. However when my friend did, I found that removing her card or not saving it helped so much. When you have to get out your card and type everything in or even take a picture it makes you pause and think "Do i even want this". I keep an emergency fund but the problem is it gets drained by major expenses. Last time it was my car, which I was still paying off, having major issues not worth fixing (including the transmission dying) so I had to dump a bunch of money into the next car. I loved this video! I sell second hand and vintage goods online and have noticed a number of similar resellers running live auctions via Whatnot. One of the reasons I sell second hand is I think it’s more sustainable and cheaper. However if you impulse buy a load of second hand items you don’t need that could still create debt and waste. I am uncomfortable with the whole concept of live shopping, and this video helped crystallise my thoughts. I had no idea just how crazy it was in China! That’s a whole other level of madness 😮

I do worry that this kind of sales tactic is far more predatory for neurodivergent people. I (not neurodivergent, afaik) have the self-control to save items to a tab on my browser and maybe go back to them later, but my friend who is autistic and has ADHD is CONSTANTLY buying and draining his savings through live shopping, Amazon deals, and TikTok shop. And none of it is stuff he needs. NERF guns, toy lightsabers, kitchen gadgets that don't work, stuff to go in his car that never actually goes in his car. His parents have had to take over paying his rent because he would spend it otherwise. Another friend spent nearly $1000 on clothing in a 'flash sale' on Instagram live, when already $20k in debt. I'd flown from London to the east coast of the US to visit her, and she complained the entire time that she was too broke to take me places, and had to work overtime instead of spending time with me, but she spent well over $2k on clothes, psychic readings, tarot readings and Loungefly handbags in the time I was there, all of it on various lives and flash sales. Again, she is neurodivergent. (disclaimer, I am not a psychologist)

I think it varies from person to person, not all neurodivergent people have trouble controlling shopping impulses or are even attracted to useless stuff. I have a friend with autism that doesn't show any interest in acquiring possessions that don't fulfill a basic need, so if his shoes are extremely worn down, but still theres a thin layer of sole between his foot and the ground, he'll refuse to buy new shoes and refuse gifted shoes, because his still work. He isn't stingy and he buys high quality things because he wants his stuff to last.

I can see what you’re saying because I know some of my friends with adhd would struggle with this but for me specifically, I’m lucky. The overwhelming nature of these videos (fast talking, lots of comments and text everywhere and colourful graphics) makes it so I physically cannot watch them. It’s one of the few benefits of sensory processing disorder.

And another cousin with autism who saves all his money for plants 😂 he has the GREENEST of thumbs, that kid doesn't even know how good he is. I agree, we should prepare ourselves to handle not falling into these things. Though we ourselves are not largely at fault. Even the smartest and brightest of us can get sucked into TikTok doomscrolling. It might be hard to understand, but these companies are fighting for your attention. I don't know who coined this word, but I feel like "Attention Economy" is the right way to describe it. We as individuals need to talk about this, so that legeslation can get up to speed with this landscape. Our governments need to keep us safe, that is one of their jobs. The reason I deleted KZbin from my phone, the reason I never installed TikTok, and the reason why I disable KZbin shorts are all the same. I don't want to get sucked into it. These are things you have control over. Don't let them get into your life. Its just like (online) privacy, the less information you give, the more secure you are. To be fair, I am still very much addicted to KZbin on desktop, but I am working on improving that. Nobody is perfect, and it is okey to have a crutch, but realize that these crutches might not have your best intrests in mind.

It’s 100% a scam. Whatnot iś a great example. They make bidding so easy that you don’t think at all until you’ve spent the money. eBay iś bad too, but at least they have a fail safe that makes you stop and think before spending. It’s scary how easy it iś to lose your money online.

Some time ago I set a goal for myself to limit online shopping. I noticed how looking for the cheapest deal took way to much energy and saved me 5€ max, so I went back to getting all essentials offline. I feel that online shopping is, like you say, a lot of impulse buying and I don’t like it. It’s different if I got it on a lovely trip with friends and while i don’t need it, it reminds me of that trip. Live online shopping in addition to the impulse to me seem almost like gambling, especially with limited quantities and I fear it’s part of the concept. That’s why I stay away from it.

Live shopping is completely stupid. Waste of time, waste of money and a waste of life. Its a pity when a human has no other things to do but rather than watch a live stream and buy stuff spontaneously. Online shopping is already aggressive enough, and there is absolutely no need in a "fun" live shopping. To avoid spontaneous shopping, I save items I want to buy in notes and I WAIT for months and months to buy it. As a result, I end up NOT buying most of the stuff I saved! As an example, I want a mixer machine for smoothies and cream soups. Its in my notes, and there is even a discount now for the mixer that I want. 6 months has passed, and I haven't bought it yet, constantly postponing it to the next months, because I dont go over the monthly budget. If I would buy stuff whenever I want, my house would become a mess and the wallet empty. I wouldn't have money for the hiking trips and healthy food I truly need and enjoy. People, we are not monkeys. We CAN and should control ourselves. If not, our lives and money will be washed out into the wallets of corporations. And IT IS a big problem for a human, in my opinions.

I think the whole aspect of live shopping is very cool, but the caviat (I might have spelled that wrong) is it feeds into the FOMO culture we are now living in. The sellers are super excited about the producers, they are talking fast, and loud, they interact with the consumer. The bad part of the live shopping is the sellers have a genius way of making the consumer believe they are going to miss out on a great bargain if they don’t buy now. Kind of like when Black Friday shopping gears up. Tons of ads telling you of the latest and greatest deal, telling the consumer you’ll never get these deals or prices again if you don’t shop now. The one rule my mother taught me growing up is if I truly felt like I wanted or needed something to wait a week. If at the end of the week I still felt the same, it is safe for me to go ahead and buy it, but if it happens to be that I forgot about said item I truly didn’t want or need it. It was an impulse buy. I’ve been really trying to look at things I like and say ‘I’m so glad this exists’ and move on. With craft materials it’s so much harder, especially fabric collections, jigsaw releases and weekly diamond painting drops. I’ve had to unfollow many of the companies I love because I just can’t resist sometimes and it takes over. I even curbed my ebook impulse shopping by subscribing to kindle unlimited and using Libby. I get the feeling of shopping without actually spending more than the subscription fee and the one time bus fare to activate my Libby account.

I have some issues with impulse buying, but the main things I get are also things I can't wait on if I want a deal because that's how secondhand markets can be sometimes. In that case, I'd say know the things you want and what you're willing to pay beforehand. Sometimes I'll pass on a thing at $20, but know that if I ever catch it for $10, that's a price I'm willing to pay.

This is fascinating! I had no idea this livestream shopping content existed. I actually work for HSN and my job is to set up the product displays, put them out & swap the displays during the live show. I wonder if the higher-ups at HSN know about this TikTok stream shopping and if they’d ever give it a try. I have so many ideas for new things we could try but I’m such a low level employee that I don’t even know who to pitch them to.

Great video! I'm a big comic book guy & live selling is killing the comic book collector industry. Books that have a value of about let's say $200 can suddenly go on Instagram Live or what not for $500 or $600 because it's just a bid between people. I've seen at some of the conventions I've gone to recently people will just put those books at a huge mark up because they know that that's what they can get for them if they were to take it to auction online. For me, personally, I'm not much of a collector of those kinds of comics too much, but it is hurting comic bookstores and the industry in general.
