Let’s talk paper

Hi everyone,
Jumping on to share with you some different papers that I have found that are fountain pen friendly. Bring a big letter writer, I am always on the hunt for budget friendly options!

I love comparing papers and matching them with an ink property, if I want to see if an ink shades at all, it usually has to be Iroful🎉 I think some copy papers also work well with fountainpen inks, especially if you use medium or fine nibs. 🙋🏻‍♀️🌻

The IroFul is amazing for shading inks! But it’s so nice to find some other less expensive papers that work too 😊

I am definitely wanting to look for some fountain pen friendly paper for letter writing. I will check out those videos on the CVS ones.

I think they use CVS Calliber or something like that Priscilla. Another one to try is Campus if you can get that over there. Have a good day/evening lovely 😊

nice one I've found that the Officework's Composition Books, the one that have the speckled black and white cover, are not too bad either to use for everyday writing, not so much for swatching, but definitely for note taking and so on. I think one book is like $4, may have gone up now, but that's what I used for a time when wanting some cheap paper to play around with.

Hi Debra, I know OfficeWorks stocks some Clairefontaine notebooks, Bookbinders Design stock Tomoe River Paper and the IroFul paper as well as Midori paper which is fountain pen friendly. But I encourage you to check out other stores around your area too, even art stores may have something. Tracing paper can be bought online and also works well for fountain pens. Hope you find some good paper near you 😊

I haven't used it extensively, but I have really enjoyed writing on Ayush paper. I believe it is made in India and was relatively inexpensive when I purchased it. I also recently purchased an A5-ish bound notebook from the Amazon Basics line to use for work, and it has worked surprisingly well with fountain pens.

A thoroughly useful video! I wish there were more of them, especially concentrating on letter-writing pads and loose leaf paper. I write a lot of letters - journaling is not for me - so reviews of paper in journal/notebook format doesn't really help me. I was brought up on Basildon Bond which is still available in the UK and Ireland. However, the quality is not consistent, even on the same sheet. Most fountain pens I have write well on it, but you can never tell if and when you'll suddenly find a patch where feathering occurs or the nib starts to feel scratchy. I have Claire Fontaine writing pads and envelopes which are generally good with most pens, though oddly I find the reverse of the sheets better to write on than the obverse (I nearly always write on both sides). I also have Tomoe River 52 gsm which is a dream to write on.

The paper they use is CVS Caliber, specifically the notebooks made in Vietnam.

Hi Julia, that’s wonderful! Do you have a particular fountain pen in mind? Do you write small or large? I can highly recommend a Pilot Kakuno with a medium nib as a starter pen. You can buy a con-40 converter for it, but to be perfectly honest I just prefer to use the Pilot cartridges and when I have finished one, wash it out and use a blunt needle to fill it with an ink of choice. Hope this helps 😊

@@jppenandink Hello Jayne. I'm looking at buying a @justturning Turnt Pen co. 'Alaskan Sunrise' with standard medium nib. I got to try a few pens at SEQ journal keepers meet up in early February. It felt the most natural in my hand. I write large, most of the time. Thanks for the recommendation and tips for the Pilot. Yes it helps 🥰

Do you think you can get Nebula paper in Australia? That's another good one. I buy 100 A4 sheets for about $12usd. It's more toothy than tomoe river but not as toothy as leuchstrum.

We can buy Nebula paper, I have a notebook where the pages rip out that I bought from the Desk Bandit, but found that I had to be careful what nibs I used on it because juicy mediums or broads sometimes bled through 🤔 Over here I think the notebook was more like nearly $30 though, so pretty expensive per sheet. Yamamoto paper also works well but very pricey.

@@jppenandink I have a notebook of theirs where the pages tear out but those aren't their premium paper from what I understand. They have a hard cover and the blank one comes with guide pages. The loose sheets are the premium weight also. If you want sometime, I'll stick a few pages in an envelope and send them and you can see if they are the same as what you had.
