Do your research is bad advice in my opinion. The people you're talking about who need to do research usually aren't smart enough to understand the difference between a good source of information and a bad source of information. Especially when you're looking for information on the Internet. So most people just find some thing that supports what they've heard and then they assume that to be true. a lot of the division that we have America right now is based on people "doing their own research".
