I really like when you talk about things you have "wondered" about. Your vast knowledge makes your wondering important. Also, I LOVE it when a scholar says, "You know, I don't really know enough about that to talk about it..." ; tells me they truly are a scholar!

First time I encountered Thomas Seymour was in the movie "Young Bess" with Jean Simmons as Elizabeth and Stewart Granger (Her husband!) playing Thomas. It was gilded Hollywood melodrama but the acting, lush score, gorgeous costumes and gutwrenching love story still make it a great film. Imagine my horror when I realized that TS was pretty much a creep who harassed 14 year old Elizabeth....that hurt to find out but I always dig for the truth once a movie has raised my interest. Have you seen this movie by any chance?

Love that movie! The only one he is really focused on.

@@TudorsDynasty Agreed. It got me into the Tudors like 25 years ago. I still love researching them and while we may not always agree, your podcasts brighten up my isolation A LOT.

This was a super interesting topic. I had never considered that perhaps the common wisdom Thomas Seymour was colored and biased by his fall and execution. I’ll be interested in reading more about it, and following more of your thoughtful podcasts.

I have read a lot over the years regarding the Tudors but didn't know that Edward and Thomas had two brothers. Interesting. Inspired me to read more about the Seymours. Thanks from England

I'm enjoying your defense of TS. I do this constantly about Richard lll! We cannot help the historical man you 'fall' for! So I can understand you, as history done this to Rlll too. Of course mine, was done by the Tudors!

Eventually I'll have time to finish my book on him and show the evidence to back up his innocence (in some situations ).

Very much enjoyed this video. Did Thomas write anything to Elizabeth when he was in the Tower?
@TudorsDynasty2 жыл бұрын
Well, there is no evidence of a letter left behind. We only have a story from people AFTER he was executed (likely to slander his name further) that said he had written letters to Mary and Elizabeth and placed in his shoe at his execution. Is it possible? Sure. But the slander was outrageous. Latimer even accused him of the death of a woman - nothing supports his claim.

Wee question on the Titles you mentioned. Lord Admiral. Did they actually earn it? Did it mean more than just power to them. I sort of have a picture of him as noble, yet charismatic, bit like Stewart Granger, lol. Not thuggish or slobbish as with some depictions. He would have been an "officer" and respectable? Or am just remembering it from movies or seeing it from a modern military perspective? Thanks.
@TudorsDynasty2 жыл бұрын
I loved Young Best and Stewart Granger's performance as Thomas!!! Your question is difficult for me to answer because I truly believe that Thomas had the skills to be Lord Admiral and I want to say he earned it on merit, but I'm not confident in that assessment. The reason I say that is because (if I recall), Henry VIII's illegitimate son Henry Fitzroy was named Lord High Admiral for awhile, and he did not have the experience.
@suswik36822 жыл бұрын
@@TudorsDynasty That said, Thomas did lead men and fought abroad in the "navy". I just imagine him more proud of this? In a good way. It is so interesting how faced with the same details of a person's life from the past, we, academic or not, all see it slightly differently. I just always wonder "objectively" their faith played a part in their choices, politics and just everyday thoughts. How did he get involved with the reformed religion..or did he? Find that facinating.
