There’s so much top-quality output from Mr. Wraight for 40K - Valdor is one, I’m reading his Vaults of Terra trilogy right now too, and Emperor’s Legion/The Regent’s Shadow were great as well - not to forget Scars, Bloodlines, and Lords of Silence!

He's rapidly becoming one of my favourite BL writers. He might even be my favourite, but I haven't quite managed to remove Abnett from that position because of the role he had in forming my younger 40k brain with Eisenhorn.

Bloodlines was so good, and I think probably a book that a lot of people will overlook. It was a great story. There's another book called The Vorbis Conspiracy which takes place after Bloodlines and is made up of a series of shorter stories by a group of different writers, but they all interlink and tell an overarching story from different perspectives. Some of Chris' characters from Bloodlines show up throughout that book and one of the stories is by Chris as well. I may be misremembering but I think one of the characters from Bloodlines also shows up as a cameo in Grim Repast by Marc Collins.

Great interview. I just finished Valdor a few days ago and loved it. Great characters, made me love the Custodes more and enjoyed Chris Wraight's writing so much I started the Watchers of the Throne series to see him write more Custodes. Also more elf people! Love elves. In WoW there is a running gag in the guild that I have a million elf alts because of how much I am drawn to them. Give me elves in any story. Eldar, Wood elves of Lothlorien, Idoneth deepkin, the Dalish of Dragon Age. Can't go wrong with elves.

Can you imagine being selected to write a 40k for the first time. So many binders of lore to read, overseen by a security guard, I imagine. I rather liked Amar and Kandawire as characters. Yet another excellent intro song, Mira.

This was a really satisfying interview for me, both great fun, and also hitting the nail on the head with musings about understanding themes over lore, and recent goings on... Excellent comments from Chris re: the "spirit" vs the "letter" of the lore. You can have all the technical details 100% correct, and still have it not feel right. I'd much rather a story nail the themes and feel rather than worry about specific characters wearing continuity-breaking marks of armor or whatever.

Was such a good novel full of so many rich interesting characters. One of my favourite parts was the old mercenary recounting his life. He was always just after battle, coin, drink & women, and lived the way he wanted. An old war dog being true to himself. & in the end he accepted his fate, charged head first into it & relished teaching the young Space Marine something to take with him to the stars. Humanity is guided by Our Emperor. But forged off the backs of millions of men like that old war dog..

Chris has become my favorite BL author without me realizing it until this weekend as I rarely paid attention who was writing the books and was mostly just following topics I was interested in. I always had an interest in White Scars and his HH story arc about them is absolutely brilliant and made them my second favorite faction. He managed something nobody else did - as I'm reading his Space Wolves books they are the only ones where I don't spend my time wishing them all to be whipped out and instead liking the characters. Now hearing that out of all the legions he is most interested in Dark Angels - which were my first step into the hobby and will always be my favorite - I can only dream about him writing a series for them. I think they really need someone like Chris to do it because it is so hard to get the nuances right to not have them appear like idiots chasing imaginary ghost screaming 'repent'. And my reading list changed now to basically read all the remaining HH and 40k books he wrote.

Does that mean you don't care unless someone loves it? Graham McNeill has a talent of telling a story without actually writing it by using classic techniques that often go overlooked. The parts he did write I felt were a bit too obvious. Everything that happens is exactly what you'd expect happening when an atheist goes to church.

Great interview as always. Chris is really a treasure of a writer and I’m always excited to see his name on a new book.
