I doubt Harry's account of his father's coldness telling him about his mother's death. Harry, in the shock of the moment, probably doesn't remember everything that happened. Harry also said his father never rode bikes with them, yet there are numerous photos of Charles, William and Harry riding bikes. In one, Harry is on the back of Charles' bike. I think Harry has a lot of anger toward his father because Diana didn't do anything to shield the children from her unhappiness and now Harry has selective memory of his childhood interactions with his father.

In “Spare” Harry accuses Charles of not showing him much affection, yet in another part of the book also recounts how Charles would sit on the bed beside Harry every night and stroke Harry’s cheek until Harry fell asleep (Harry was apparently afraid of the dark). Henry's account of Charles' lack of hugging when breaking the news of Diana's death should also take into account that Charles, himself, may have been in shock to some degree. Just because his marriage had failed doesn't mean that he didn't still care for her in some way. We all react to such shocking news in our own way.
@carolinemcnulty6169Ай бұрын
I often notice that people outside Britain seem to have missed her post-divorce comments about how she and Charles made their peace. Harry's 'memories' seems to have hardened only after his marriage. The book needs to be taken with a pinch of salt because he openly admits he can't remember most of his youth and needs to be reminded of things by others. Drug use will do that to you.
@colleenosullivan857Ай бұрын
Just because he wasn’t allowed to marry who he wanted, I think he realized he hurt Diana and regretted it. He and Diana loved the boys and put them first. If they hadn’t made peace with each other, they would not have been able to do that peacefully. Harry was always wild, but his marriage to Meghan turned him into someone that I don’t think even he recognizes. Her influence has turned him into a bitter middle aged man
@lillyroth61Ай бұрын
This week I watched an interview of a Royal biographer that reminded us all two very important things about the relationship between the then Prince Charles and Princess Diana: 1) That Diana said that they both loved each other and the letters the send each other in the initial years of their marriage is a testament to how much he loved and cared for her; 2) that they were both in very good terms in her last years. He has shared, in his own very private way, how shocked he was when Diana died. The princes did lose a mother, but he too lost someone he had cared a lot for. People now forget it was his decision not to present Camila as a formal girlfriend in his younger years. And that she was in love with and pursued Parker Bowles. Maybe later they got together and rekindled their relationship, but Diana was not his second best option. Even if later on their relationship dd not work out.
@yesterdayitrainedАй бұрын
Two people can love each other very deeply, try their best to make their relationship work, become sad, angry and frustrated that it doesn’t. But that love often remains. PC lost his wife of many years, and the mother of his children. I believe they never stopped loving each other. I am certain her death broke PC’s heart- for the loss he keenly felt, and for the grief and pain he knew it would cause his children. I am glad to see the world finally recognize KC3 for the good, loving, empathetic man he has always been.

Looking stunning as ever, River. As to Charles breaking the news of Diana’s death to the boys - sometimes in the shock of the moment, denial, frozen reaction or anger might be the emotions so a hug is not welcomed. That comes later. Your comment about Harry’s memory of how his father told him his mother had died had me remembering the day my father died when I was 12. My mother was in shock, so a neighbor told me very quickly and then told me to go across the street to another neighbor. I walked over there alone and knocked on the door. I was let in by the oldest daughter who despised me, so I walked into their den as the 6 pm news was coming on, leading with my father’s death. I just stood there listening, totally confused. A few minutes later their father came running in screaming at me about my brother he had gone to New Orleans to pick up. But, my brother didn’t get that message and found a ride home. The family pretty much forgot I was there, so I left the house and went back home alone. When I walked back in, one of Mom’s work friends saw me and grabbed me in a hug. She was also the mother of one of my classmates so she passed the word to the other women there (odd that there were only women there) that she was taking me to her house. The whole funeral process was traumatizing, but for whatever reason, the process made me stronger. My father’s death was local news, but not a permanent presence. I still miss him, but I moved forward. Years later mom asked what happened to me that day but I only told her another teacher took care of me. She had no memory of anything. Everyone loses someone. I wish Harry would stand up straight and live HIS life. I’ll just stop there. You’re awesome, River!

@@ameliaclark5792 I cannot imagine how difficult that must be for a parent- to have to tell your children such devastating news, and knowing that moment will be a demarcation throughout the rest of their lives. And you, the remaining parent, having to be the harbinger. PH clearly has no empathy, sympathy, or insight. After all these years, even if what he wrote is true (doubtful), as an adult, he still holds this against a father- a man likely equally broken by the death of Princess Diana, divorced or not.

I really appreciate Timothy's comment about taking responsibility and to stop blaming colonists for all Africa's problems. I'm sure there was extortion and wrongs done, but I also know that most expats I knew loved their African country and never abused it. I grew up in East Africa in the 1950's - 1978. My mum was from England, and my dad was from Europe, but he spent all his life in East Africa. It was our home, which we deeply loved and where my soul still roams. We never abused anything. We cherished and greatly appreciated our life out there, and I am a very proud African even if I am white. I married a Canadian in Africa and moved to Canada with him. Otherwise, I would still be in Africa. Thank you, Timothy, for your wise words. ❤

Most of Africa has had its independence for around 60 -70 years now. If one looks at the the US, from when it won its independence in 1776 and what it achieved between then and say 1840 it was well on its way to becoming the most industrialised nation on earth and was totally self sufficient. I f one looks at what most of Africa has achieved in the same time frame, it’s simply been a disastrous debacle of starvation, decline and starvation.
@laineymcd4074Ай бұрын
@@supertuscans9512 I do feel the need to point out that some, not all, of that starvation is because of climate change. Map from the 60s show the Sahara as a small oval at the top of the continent. Now maps show that desert well into Kenya and similarly down across the continent. I find it hard to imagine the green places I grew up in now laid waste. Perhaps if the countries could stop infighting long enough, they could regain some of that back and sent the desert on its way.

@@laineymcd4074 well I’m actually super interested in that, people are trying to re-populate Africa with trees but from what I understand the locals there won’t stop chopping down the trees because they like it for the charcoal to cook with. The population explosion there is quite a situation, how to mediate that the land can’t support the humans they have now yet the population doubling in 20 years. Wow.

In 1986, Charles visited Texas. My sister & I decided on a whim to go see him at the San Jacinto Monument. I wouldn’t have dreamed of touching him, but gave him a small Texas flag. Later on, on the news, he still had my flag. It was a bit of a thrill. Of course, everyone was disappointed not to see Diana, & Charles was aware of that, but he was terribly charming. I find it very very hard to believe that Charles didn’t hug and comfort both of his sons when he told them about the passing of their mother. We don’t know how the Royal act behind closed doors, we don’t know if in private they are a family that hug each other. Just because they are Royal, let’s not forget they are also normal people with normal emotions. Victimhood is Harry’s idea of the truth. This 40 year old man child needs to put on his big boy pants and grow up, it’s embarrassing to watch and hear the victimhood tripe that comes out of his mouth. Getting people to feel sorry for you doesn’t earn you respect.

I have always adored Prince and now King Charles and I am always grateful for you River for reminding us of his warmth and empathy. He was out of his depth with Diana and I believe we are all understanding more than ever before the pickle he'd been placed into with all that -- the pressure to wed her, and her woundedness, cruelty and mind games. I have to assume that Charles was both in complete shock and also feeling some sort of free-floating guilt/shame when Diana died. He probably didn't know what the actual fucking fuck to do in that moment of breaking the hideous awful news of her death to the boys. I wish Harry would have a bit more empathy for his dad. It's not like Charles didn't try to show love and care. Some of us have parents who never tried at all. I'd have killed for a love note under my pillow or a hand on the knee. Adults are human too and who was there to hug and hold Charles all the times that Diana screamed at him and told him he was ugly in his cute little suits? That man has been through it, and all he's ever done is good works. He never received a fucking hug from his dad as a child! All we can do is try to do better with our kids, and unless your parent is a literal Nazi we must find a way to understand their limitations and their own unmet needs even as we judge them.

Yes. Back then I think I hated him and blamed him for all of his wife’s unhappiness. But with the passing of time. I have learned that the press showed things very onesided. I have learned that she was not the saint I thought she was. She was a good person who had flaws and was not perfect or bad. Now I love the king and his wife both. I wish them nothing but happiness. There was a lot that we did not know that we know now. I believe that Harry lies to hurt his family and can not believe anything he says .

I was able to read “the Diary of a Housekeeper “ which was not sold in Britain. The author was the housekeeper at Highgrove during then Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s early marriage. The Vintage Read reviewed the book awhile back- well worth checking it out.

During the time of Charles’ & Anne’s up bringing, most of that generation did not show affection in public. I think both of them knew their mother & father loved them. ❤ The post of the King hugging all of those girls made me happy. I also believe that Charles and the Queen with Prince Phillip hugged and showed great affection toward the boys when Diana died. The Queen & Prince Philip insisted on staying extra time at home with the boys before going to London and facing those crowds. If Charles did not hug Harry when telling him of his mother’s death it may have been that Harry threw himself face down on his bed or did something else to avoid the hug. However, I think Harry is lying again.
