That was a useful comparison. I live more to the south of you (In Alabama) so it would be hard to justify snow tires for any reason but it is still good to know some of the limitations of AT's on snow and ice. While I grew up driving on snow and ice, I now live in a land where people rarely see the stuff; the biggest risk on the road is from other drivers.

Good video! Using blizzak WS80’s on our 18 outback and have been VERY VERY impressed. Most say “oh I have awd (or 4wd) i dont need winter tires”.. not worth arguing that they also need to stop and turn in winter conditions and/or on cold surfaces. I will say the BFG at ko2 was pretty good in winter conditions for an all terrain ... but still not like an actual winter tire.

I had a '07 Subaru legacy with I guess you could say okay tires and they were less than half tread and I went everywhere in the snow. The deep snow on off-road if you know how to drive. You really don't need a winter tire for a Subaru, but for people who don't know how to drive that great. Yes, get a winter tire

Ultimately is more important than even the tire. Is the person behind the wheel of the vehicle. You can have the best tires in the world and someone who isn't the best at driving will still have a difficult time. Or you can put somebody that like me has plenty of experience on and off-road and all sorts of different vehicles. And you can give me some half bald or less tires that are just regular tires and I'll go more places and some average person that has really good tires with the same vehicle

Snow tire technology / design has improved greatly over the past decade. If you live in an area that routinely has snow and low temperatures, (below 45 degrees) dedicated snow tires are a worth while investment. I bought the General Altimax Arctic 12. About $700 for a set of 4, (225/55r/16) mounted and balanced. They perform well, worth every penny. The compounds used in snow tires is what sets them apart. They stay pliable, allowing them to maintain adequate traction. It’s also very important to maintain the proper air pressure for safety and overall tire performance and tread life. $700 may seem pricey. But a minor accident will cost you far more. And the average tow truck recovery will cost you about $100-200. And todays vehicle can be damaged quite easily when they slide off the road and into a ditch. Snow tires provide the most safety while driving in low temperatures combined with snow/ice/slush. Once you drive with dedicated snow tires during the winter season, you will always do so thereafter. I have witnessed $50-75k vehicles sitting idle because their tires have little or no traction.

I agree that snow tires are better than all seasons in the snow and ice. That said, I just put a set of Pirelli Cinturato P7 all season tires on my 2015 Outback 3.6r. I needed new tires and didn’t have the money to buy a winter and summer set. I also don’t have a second set of wheels to put snows on, so I’d have to have the tire dismounted and remounted every time. So given those 2 circumstances it made better sense for me for now to get a good set of all seasons. It so happens that those tires have a great rating in the winter (not that they are as good as winter tires but so far they seem to be doing pretty decent). What I do have going for me is a severe climate change in my region. Normally we get buried in snow (we always measured by the foot with each storm) but the last 15 plus years we haven’t gotten much snow (now we measure by the inch with each storm). Summers have been brutally hot and humid (like a rain forest). All this climate change means I don’t need snow tires and chains anymore.

Although a second set of wheels is more expensive the cost is usually just for the set of the wheels. The second set will increase the longevity of the other set so you’ll double the life of the tires. So not as expensive as it seems

I would have to argue that the 3 peak rating isnt meaningless when you have roads in places like Utah or Colorado that require that as a minimum rating to drive on a road in certain months. Granted snow tires will always beat all terrains. The rating is created by USTMA and RAC, but the rating only rates based on acceleration, not breaking or turning.

Useful braking comparison and shows what most people already know. However, the overall conclusion is not really accurate. It should have said that dedicated winter tires are much better than 3 peak snow rated AT tires at braking on ice. The 3 peak snow rated AT would likely have been much better that non-3 peak rated AT tires... if you had tested them. And would have also been much better than all seasons. Also, the 3 peak rating is given based on acceleration only and in specific conditions. It means more about being able to get moving than it does about stopping. Saying it "means nothing at all" is a patently false statement and claiming 3 peak is marketing only is grossly inaccurate. Clearly, dedicated winter tire are much better in light snow and ice... at braking... than 3 peak rated AT tires. You should test accelerating up a mild grade or in deep snow and you'd probably find them to be closer in performance. Still liked the video... it confirms what we all already knew, thanks.

I love mine and I live in the Hills of West Virginia and they do great running the back country roads even in deep snow. Watch the video link I posted if you want to see how they do beyond the parking lot stopping test.

I would say driving forward is more of a test of the four wheel drive system and not so much the tire isn't it? With a good AWD system you can keep forward momentum going even with ebay all seasons. I'm in WV too. What part you from bubby?
@BillyPilgrim70
@BillyPilgrim70 4 жыл бұрын
@@bruceyyyyy Your argument suggests you can do fine driving in snow with cheap ebay A/S tires as long as you have a good AWD/4WD system? Then tires don't matter at all for winter just buy a vehicle with a really good 4WD system and save big money on tires. Winter tires will always out perform AT tires in winter just like my Ultra High Performance summer tires on my Focus RS blow away any all season in summer, that's not a news flash, but stopping distance is just one small part of the equation. That's why Motor Trend, Car & Driver, etc, don't call a tire "Sad" just because the stopping distance isn't the best. The guy driving in Vermont (and many other videos) doing real world driving show the true capabilities of the tire. Neither tire you tested looked like it did too good in the turning test either because nobody takes turns like that at 35 mph in the winter unless they are parking lot rally drivers. Hoonigan Bruceyyyyy Block? All I can say with 100% certainty is the Falken WP AT3W has been a great tire for winter driving especially compared to the stock Geolanders that came on my 2019 Crosstrek. IF you want to run one tire year round they are about as good as it gets for driving in all conditions (except deep mud but they are not horrible) also the Continental TerrainContact A/T is also very good but the Falkens seem to do better in snow from all the reviews I've watched which is why I went with the WildPeaks. I might have to hit up the University High School parking lot tho for some fun this winter. I have two boys in Mo-Town that live with their mom. One is a senior at MHS this year. Stay safe my friend.

@@BillyPilgrim70 I think the tires are as important as the 4WD system. I think the AT3 is a good tire. I just replaced them last month. I just don't think it's comparable to a dedicated winter tire. Yes, the 3peak mtn snow flake (3PMSF) is useless, or at best, has outlived it's usefulness. 3PMSF rating only requires 10pct better snow traction (compared to some std all season tire). 3PMSF does not require: winter compound, extra siping, or grit particles; and those are the things you want in a "dedicated winter tire".

Ya. I'm sure they do well enough in the snow but having driven them back to back it's a night and day difference. If you asked me if I had to drive in the snow with ATs... Or drive in the snow with snow tires and half my brakes disabled. I would still pick snow tires. Props to the folks that think their AT is good enough for them. But after having snow tires I know what works for me.

Every year I see full size 4x4 trucks and SUVs in the ditch on busy highways more than cars when the temps drop to under freezing. I'm sure some of them have the 3-peak snow rated tires. Should be banned marketing since it gives people confidence in the winter they should not have.

Good video. I'm still undecided though. I'm supposed to get Michelin X-ICE 3s installed this friday on my 4runner and I was planning on getting the Falkens for the summer. It would be cheaper to just get the Falkens and be done with it though. I currently have Nitto Terra Grapplers now and I was sliding all over the place in snow storm today. So those are a definite no-go.

NYC 4Runner here planning on changing from Michelan LTX M/S2 to Falkin At3s soon. We rarely get snow in the city now, so the tires are just meant for snowboarding trips. Not everyone live in a house where they can store tires....so Falkins are probably best option. I've driven plenty times in the snow with my Michelins already. I think the major difference is on ice.

Just kidding - snow tires are for people who like messing with tires every 6 months. Just slow down, and have better tires than the person in front of you. @@timwilson7326 I watched the whole video twice. I used to work in a tire store and different vehicles respond better with the right tire design. To really test tires you need to swap them out on the same vehicle on the same day in the same conditions. The center of gravity changing plays a huge role in how a tire performs on different vehicles. How the car is loaded, the gas tank level, the wind profile against the vehicle from different angles you name it. I live in the Midwest and we are used to constant changing conditions and terrain types. Some tires will steer better but won't stop well. Some tires will take off and stop well but won't turn well on ice but do ok in slush. You get what I mean. Use the same vehicle and the same driver on the same day in a relatively short time and see how it goes. I live in a Rural area and when we were younger some of us guys carried a whole different set of tires with us in the back of the 4x4 for off roading, mudding or hill climbing. I used to run a 1976 short box 1/2 ton Jeep pickup with a 401 in it. It would climb hills like a mountain goat but I could not keep it in my lane on ice no matter what tires I put on it. It was happier with two wheels in the ditch. It was too light and had too much torque to the wheels no matter how you drove it. I had a factory quadratrac system in it with a front end air locker. The factory quadra trac system was twitchy. I finally broke down and put skinny bias-ply directional mud and snow tires on it and that fixed the problem. Those tires would slip and break loose on the ice and just as quick grab again. Then I could point it a direction and keep it going where I wanted. it jut took way longer to stop and you had to drive for it.

3PMSF actually is quite useful and meaningful. For cleared roads, a dedicated winter tire outperforms everything. However for uncleared roads 3PMSF tires will handily outperform blizaks and the like as those dedicated snow tires do not deep enough treads nor are big enough for real snowy roads. The best advice is talk to a knowledgeable tire shop and tell them your needs.

Most winter driving is done on packed snow and ice. AT3’s don’t perform to the same level as winter tires on packed snow and ice. Black ice is what sends people without winters into the ditch.
