Ngl, it's frustrating when good cozy mobile games are originally a PC port while mobile-original games aren't as good because of mobile monetisation.

Great video! As an avid mobile gamer, you've raised a lot of points that I totally agree with. I'm very frustrated with the mobile gaming world as it is right now. Personally, I did LOVE the world and characters of Tsuki Odyssey, but I ended up having to delete it from my phone because I found the hourly refresh mechanic of the shops freakishly addicting- I'd stay up to ridiculous hours because I "just don't want to miss out on any new items". Maybe that says more about me than the game though 😂. My personal recommendations for peaceful games are Alto's Adventure, Monument Valley and I Love Hue! They're perhaps not as *cute*, but they have a comforting vibe and are some of the least predatory mobile games I've ever come across.

As someone who grew up on the DS, its sad that theres almost no cozy games on mobile. Like a genuinely good game that isnt too fast paced or needs longer play sessions (eg Balatro, Slay the Spire, runner type games- good but very active games). I really like some of the older simple, handheld games that have a one time payment that are genuinely carryable. The Switch & Deck just aren't that portable.

It is unfortunate that mobile games are more profitable than other types of games with all the microtransactions. I get it, but I would still happily pay $20 to unlock a full game/story rather than be drip-fed features with jewels or gacha mechanics.

I totally agree! That's what I find so great about mobile games like balatro, and I think it's phantasian? Basically just normal ass games on mobile instead of monitization stations lol I think there's room for really interesting unique experiences you can only have on mobile, but clearly the micro transaction route is far too great an incentive.

I was disappointed Cozy Grove sequel is a Netflix Game on Mobile only and the Hello Kitty Island Adventure was only on Apple Arcade. That one is coming to switch, though!

Me too! I'd love to play both, but I have an Android and no longer use Netflix. 🫤

I played it on Switch so I can't speak to how it was on mobile (Or even if it was on mobile rather than just tablet), but my favourite cozy game game I recall playing that's available on iOS or Android would be Cozy Grove. Think... Goth Animal Crossing with actual questlines associated with each character (and character stories to go with them) and you're not far off for the vibe of the game. The next one down that I can think of off the top of my head would be Tripple Town, which while it is by default an energy system, with each move costing you energy, and I don't love that as a monetization strategy, back when I played it let you make a single purchase for infinite energy essentially making the energy system feel like a demo mode for the game, at least to me, and is a puzzle game about making groups of three and not letting your town be overrun by bears. I think I'm about the only person who finds the energy mechanic useful as long as it was tied to something pretty 'large' like lives since it gives a natural off ramp to mobile experiences that might otherwise be 'sticky' - which is obviously not why they're there, if they were there for that reason there wouldn't be a pay to recharge option. Also I sometimes quit mobile games if they're too generous with the energy in the first session leaving me feeling 'stuck' in the game for several hours, which seems to be a tactic mobile publishers often use to create a sunk cost fallacy keeping people coming back by giving them an extra large first session. It's not my _favourite_ off ramp, even ignoring that it's almost accidentally one - Animal Crossing and Cozy Grove just gradually winding down the things to do each day but without forcing you out of the game if you want to just endlessly fish, or whatever also works, and even something like Stardew Valley or there being points where all your sims are asleep in The Sims provides me either an explicit or subtle prompt that causes me to assess if I'm done for today or actively want to keep playing, I'm finding the same thing for the gentle encouragement to skip to morning in Spiritfairer now that I'm getting around to that game - this is why I actually kind of prefer save points to save anywhere (although games should let you leave whenever you want to, but from a design ethos I want to see stuff with both quicksave and save points) but games giving me natural off points is something I have come to value more and more as just something that makes games more accessible to me.

Thanks for the great recs, I'll definitely have to check those out. I like your take on the energy mechanic, I totally agree it can serve as a good off ramp if it's tied to something like lives, unfortunately it's often tied to smaller things lol but I totally agree with what your saying haha thanks so much for the comment!

No hate to those games, they looked cute, but the monetization, energy, and being forced to wait for hours and hours for things to "be finished" takes away from the cozy feeling and just frustrates me.
