NOTHING can match the expectations they have so no matter what, everything will be wrong in their eyes. Abby has great insight.

@@alexkoronec4326 Let's put it this way. You misused the word "clone." This was an homage to the original, just like the original was an homage to everything Lucas liked growing up. But if you're gonna say a SW movie copied another SW movie then look no further than RotJ, and even TPM. It's best to just go by Lucas' own statement: it's like poetry, it rhymes, than it is to get all butthurt over something out of pure ignorance.

Great reaction!!!! In regards to Harrison Ford dying in this movie he wanted to be killed off in Empire Strikes Back but didn't get his wish. George Lucas managed to get him back on board. Yes there are issues with this trilogy but there has been issues with the others as well. You should have heard the backlash at the prequels when they came out. Watch the next 2 movies and if you like them or you don't that is fine. Don't let others make you feel guilty for liking something they don't. Can't wait till you react to the Obi-Wan series. Also, if you haven't seen the Back to the Future trilogy you should definitely check that out. May the Force be with you young Jedi :)

NIce reaction, again. Thanks! The elderly "ally" gent at the start of the movie who you didn't recognise was played by the actor Max von Sydow toward the end of his 70-year acting career. If you want to see him in his youth, in his 20s he played a middle-aged Swedish knight at the time of the Black Plague, starring in Ingmar Bergman's movie, The Seventh Seal (1957). He appeared in about 150 films, including American movies such as The Exorcist (1973), and he had a role in Game of Thrones (2016).

29:33 - Daniel Craig cameo. Also, this was Peter Mayhew's last film appearance before retiring. Chewie was played interchangably by Mayhew in moments when Chewbacca's stationary, but when he's moving, he's played by Joonas Suotamo who's fully played the character since the next movie. Edit: Han Solo dying WAS Harrison Ford's idea, believe it or not. He wanted it to happen in Empire Strikes Back, but George Lucas wouldn't do it. 35:30 to 35:32 - Chewie shot him, which made Ren bleed. The bowcaster really packs some power.

@@AbbyJaneReacts I would have preferred Han to die while performing a heroic act that saved millions of lives, but I understand why it was necessary for his son to kill him. Darth Vader is a difficult villain to replace as he provoked an emotional response just by appearing on the screen without having to say a word. Kylo Ren - it can't be easy to be the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia, with Luke Skywalker your Uncle. The children of famous parents often have issues which the temper tantrums and moments of self-doubt highlighted. Anikin went through all the same stuff in 1, 2 & 3. Yes the droids are wonderful and BB8 is a great new character. My personal favourite droid is K from Rogue One - still angry they came up with so many lovable characters and then killed them all. To change the subject, were you anywhere near the floods? I hope all is ok there. xx

When Rey heard her name in the force dream, it was Sir Alec Guinnes as Obi Wan. The sound technicians found a clip of him saying "Afraid" and clipped it so that he could be in the movie. The complaints about Rey is that she is just automatically good at everything, basically a Mary Sue. Harrison Ford thought Han should have died in Return of the Jedi, which is where the impression that he didn't like Star Wars came from. He thought his arc should have ended at the end of the original trilogy. He was actually placed in Carbonite in Empire Strikes Back because he hadn't yet signed to come back for Return of the Jedi, so they had the option to kill him off, off screen, or just not be able to find him. I think the OG light sabers looked much better than the new ones.

This is the best of the final trilogy but even theses is viewed as kind of a remake of the original film. A cantina scene. Another super powerful space station. A robot with plans the rebels need, etc.

Hi Abby not really a fan of the Disney trilogy myself but did enjoy your reaction to it, also Harrison Ford has wanted Han Solo to be killed off since Empire Strikes Back, but Lucas didn't want that to happen which is why he's in ROTJ, he only agreed to do this film if he was killed off, and because Star Wars is owned by Disney now and Lucas has nothing to do with it, they granted Harrison his wish and killed his character off.

Harrison Ford has said since the 1980's that some fans obsess over his role of han solo instead of his other roles so he isn't as excited about it compared to other roles. For example if you see him do interviews about him playing Indiana Jones hes so enthusiastic about that role. It think for Ford its just a matter of which roles he likes the most. I don't think he dislikes playing Han Solo but I think its just not his favorite role he's done. I think just some roles he's enjoyed more. The actor who played Ben/Obi Wan in the original trilogy infamously told younger fans to kind of grow up and stop liking his character and star wars in general. Sir Alec Guinness was the actor's name. Fans over the years really didn't like Guinness saying that. But Ewan McGregor who played young Obi has always seemed to love olaying the character. I think for some actors some of these roles like more than others.

00:21:50 Abby: "OK, I have no idea what is going on" Don't worry, the writers didn't either. They just made stuff up as they went along, poorly. This was a fun movie. But everything wen't downhill from here, in no small part due to the bad writing decisions. Yes, I agree nostalgia is a big influence on how a work is perceived, but we forget it can play a role in both ways. For context, I'm as old as Star Wars itself. So I literally grew up watching the original trilogy, over and over for over 20 years. That tends to elevate the love for those movies to the level of religion. Me and my friends learned every little detail we could about the movies, dialog, extended universe as we could. There was nothing much else. When the prequels came out, my love for Star Wars and the nostalgia made me love the prequels despite their obvious pitfalls. Nostalgia made me ignore its defects, even though everyone around me pointed them out. Fast forward to this movie, many details seemed off, we would demerit it for having an unoriginal structure way too close to a New Hope, but we also favor it for being a homage to the originals. But even nostalgia of the levels we live as the old farts we are, is not enough to overcome some of the bad decisions in this trilogy, we feel a big disservice to what made Star Wars stand apart. Another counter example is Blade Runner (also with Harrison Ford) and its sequel. Blade Runner is a literal CULT classic, and remained a stand alone film for over 36 years, that also elevates its nostalgia for us fans to the level of cult. And BR2049 showed it can be done, a sequel, a homage, with different formula and with respect. What Disney did in the new trilogy simply does not cut it and makes me sad. Star Wars deserved better.

@miao_renfeng I think the biggest pitfall the ST had was that there was no "overall story arc" from the get go. Lucas, when doing the originals, and even the PT, had a basic storyline to work with. Yes, it evolved over time to make it better, but at least there WAS one. The ST was literally "let's just hire people to make it up as they go along", and that was its biggest weakness. You'll notice that they haven't made that mistake since. The two "Anthology" movies, The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and I'll even go so far as to include The Acolyte into that, have NOT made that same mistake. Even if you don't enjoy any particular title, at least they ARE cohesive in the storyline.

I disagree. Grew up with the original trilogy (4-6). For me episode 1-3 was the biggest cinema disappointment maybe next to Matrix 2&3. During epsiode 1 I thought about leaving the cineama because the target audience were six year old children. 2&3 were a bit better but I did not like the development either. Rewatched parts of 1-3 and did not finish. In contrast to that, I really liked the new trilogy. Lateley we did a star wars watch party and watched 4-9 on two weekends. Everyone was happy, no one missed 1-3.

Just like with the Original Trilogy, each director was able show their creative vision. I think Kathleen trusted her directors. As a producer it makes sense. But Lucas was a producer AND writer on each film in the original trilogy so despite different directors some of his vision still remained. Kennedy not being a writer obviously didn't do this.

I think my problem when coming to this film as a newcomer to the franchise was how it off-screen reestablished the status quo of the original trilogy. They may be named differently, but its basically the Rebellion vs. The Empire again, and Rey is basically a new Luke, whilst Kylo is a new Vader, the later movies will mirror this even more as more similarities crop up. I think rather than coming up with an original idea, it retreads the original trilogy massively and kinda steps on the stuff the characters accomplished in the previous movies by removing all of their accomplishments to reset the status quo again. I don't have issues with this one as a movie standalone, but I think its a very lazy sequel. It became especially apparent when I read the New Jedi Order books from the late 90s and early 2000s and they came up with an interesting new threat and worked upon everything from the previous films without retreading massively and not telling a similar story (largely because George was heavily involved in the story planning and was adamant it was original and aligned with his idea of what the sequels should explore thematically if not the same narrative). I think I like this trilogy less and less the more I think about them.

Imo I think Lucas probably wanted the Kennedy star wars films to be more like Guardians of the Galaxy which was released a year before a force awakens in terms of VFX. Rocket snd Groot look so good in Guardians vol. 1 vfx wise. I think that film pushes the envelope of vfx at the time it was released. I think th Force Awakens did good but I think for Lucas he really wanted to see the special effects pushed to their limit and perhaps passed past that.

You asked why Finn became a Stromtrooper, well, in the Star Wars universe, the main reasons to someone enlist usually are: Patriotism and Ideology: Many stormtroopers believed in the ideals of the Empire (or, in that case, The First Order), viewing it as a stabilizing force that brought order to the galaxy. They often saw their service as a way to contribute to a greater cause, especially in the wake of the Clone Wars, when the galaxy was rife with conflict. Economic Opportunity: For some, joining the military provided a way out of poverty or a chance for a better life. The Empire promised job security and benefits, which appealed to individuals from less affluent backgrounds, just like The First Order. Coercion and Indoctrination: Some Stormtroopers were conscripted against their will or manipulated through propaganda and indoctrination. The Empire and First Order used various means to recruit soldiers, including threats and coercive tactics in less stable regions. Desire for Adventure: Young recruits often sought adventure or excitement, drawn to the idea of being part of something larger than themselves and experiencing the thrill of combat. Views on the Empire and First Order and Their Job The perspective of Stormtroopers on the Empire and their roles varied widely, some had fear of it and some admiration.

Kylo/Ben is one of my favorite characters in all of Star Wars. Rey lived in an old AT-AT. You were so close 😄 I adore all the sequels, save a few issues with episode 9. Nothing is perfect though, and they're all entertaining in their own way. I've been a fan of Star Wars since 1999. You should check out the first order SNL skit with Adam Driver. Undercover Boss style. 💖

Mark Hamill himself was absolutely disgusted by this movie. He expected the lightsaber to fly to Luke Skywalker and that be his entrance. Not "fly to some girl that doesn't even know she's force sensitive and has had absolutely no training" Episodes 7-9 were supposed to be Luke starting a new Jedi Order, training Leia to be a Jedi, building a new temple and having children and training them. Kylo Ren didn't exist in George Lucas's story for these, Ben Solo didn't exist, Ben Skywalker son of Luke & Mara Jade was a Jedi (named after Ben Kenobi) and Jacen Solo also a Jedi son of Han & Leia is who turned to the dark side and was Darth..... I can't remember. Also Luke was supposed to turn to the dark side as the apprentice of a Darth Sidious clone and then turn back to the light on his own. But Disney said "we don't have any source material these so we are just making random BS up".

But what you are describing wasn't by Lucas either. That was the EU or extended universe which was just licensed stories continuing the story Lucas ended in ep 6. Lucas didn't write any of the EU like creating Mara Jade or those storylines.

No, George Lucas was not disappointed with what Disney has done. That's just a narrative pushed my a certain corner of the fandom. You are so correct in your assessment of fans and the nostalgia factor. Nostalgia plays a huge role, and many don't realize that. When you have a franchise that spans multiple generations (almost 50 years) and is so incredibly large, there just is no pleasing everyone.

From what I looked up Lucas was disappointed that they didn’t use his original plot draft which they promised they would and he critiqued TFA for being somewhat of a the copy and paste of a ANH. He hasn’t publicly commented on the others which in of itself you could argue is a red flag if he thinks they’re great why hasn’t he said so? I’m not gonna try to make someone not enjoy it but you can look up almost any analysis video on the trilogy they generally get the main points on why all 3 films are terribly written has nothing to do with nostalgia When this one first released it wasn’t as hated as the others heck even to this day some argue it’s an ok film but the following film confirmed what I thought was an obvious outcome as a result of the narrative set up in this one. Many blame it having a different writer not comprehending he wasn’t given any other route to go idk if it’s still around but I remember finding a video where someone finally pointed that out

The CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, revealed in his memor that Lucas told him that Lucas was disappointed in them not pushing the special effects further aka pushing the envelope.

I personally think the modern technology, directing, vfx, etc. Gets better with each of these films despite me not liking the story as much. But just to clarify Lucas is still seemingly good friends with Kathleen Kennedy who he hand picked to lead his legacy and make the new star wars films sikce he was just at some award shows with her last few years. But yah he did tell the CEO of Disney according to that CEO's memoir, did want the new films to push the envelope more especially with the special effects.
