I really appreciate seeing people highlighting the good and bad parts of the LA. Obviously it is going to be different and not how we expected, but people have gotten so fired up about the changes and it's not necessary. I'm not saying I love all the changes or the show is a 10/10, but I can see where the writers were going and a lot of the changes/additions are most likely to set up the next seasons. I wish there were at least two more episodes just to give more breathing room and expand on stuff.

The main things I wish they didn't remove was Aang and Katara learning water bending from Master Pakku.
@vdiitd9 ай бұрын
The problem is not that they changed things, the problem is that they changed things in a way that makes the story, the characters way less compelling and even illogical in some cases (like Katara waterbending a wall of water 200ft high, in the very first episode when they already established she didnt know how to do it and didn't acknowledge that it was just a luck). They did make some good changed, like Zuko's crew. But those are few and far between.

I didn't like what they did with Katara. She basically says that's she's helping Aang bc it helped her to become a better bender. She also says to Aang something in the lines of "when you have lost everything is when you find your true power", what is basically saying "well, all your family, people and culture have been erased from the world but look at the bright side, you'll super powerful now" Wtf is going on with this adaptation and power? Did the Firelord write the script of the show? Very confusing

Just saw your reaction, Sophia and from what you said here, I completely agree. They have made some major changes for this live action remake because since we’re very familiar with the story, they had to improvise or it will be too obvious and definitely plagiarize it. Overall, the one problem I do have is how Zuko looks in this one because in the original, it was a straight injury to the face that his scar was a 3-degree burn while here, his skin looks like it has been swollen after a serious punch instead. Nevertheless, Netflix did a phenomenal job by actually paying homage to one of most revered animated series of Nickelodeon. 👌

Exactly! Like I get wanting to stay true to the original but we gotta remember that an exact copy would be extremely boring. This is honestly why I avoided rewatching the animated series before watching the live action series cause I wanted to avoid comparing. Like if we're going into this expecting a play by play copy only with real people, then we're just asking to have a bad time.
@stefanyiturrino67239 ай бұрын
i honestly understand people comparing them cause its kinda impossible not to but i do think its silly to literally compare everything like "No! Aang got the thing for appa from the pirates" "Kyoshi didnt talk to him until second season" it literally doesnt matter... believe me if it was a complete copy of the animated series it would be boring
@icyboi139 ай бұрын
Fun reaction! I hope you enjoy the future episodes & see how well they integrated different episodes together. I think the Kyoshi episode hooked me the most. I like that they’re focusing on the more realistic aspects of how a 100 years of war would devastate a world & cultures. Looking forward to episodes 3 & 4. I hope you can see this as an adaptation & less as a straight scene by scene reenactment. It’s got some really great moments & even deviations that I think put a different but not necessarily contradicting view of the story. It’s the same main story, just through a different lens. Idk. I kinda like the less goofy aspects. Sometimes the first season especially of AtLA didn’t hook me as much as the later two seasons because of how silly it could be. It’s still great. I just don’t need to see as much of the goofiness & enjoy this variation. It reminds me of like HP or Lord of the Rings & how they’re very different from their source material in some ways but still told an entertaining spin on the orignal story.

It's not bad, but the exposition is a bit much. They're trying to rush through things for time I think so they're relying on direct exposition a lot more than they really should. For instance, did we really need Aang to basically look straight into the camera and tell us "I'm feeling scared and unready," in that monologue in episode 1? Ironically, having the characters stand around and directly explain what's going on and how they're feeling only kind of serves to slow things down because it gets a bit boring. Hopefully they tighten up the writing and storytelling in the next season. It looks great, the acting is mostly fine, some of the changes actually work quite well and I can grudgingly live with the ones that aren't great, but something about the dialogue and pacing makes it not quite hit.
@KrystalAnn06889 ай бұрын
So, for this, Netflix’s live action adaptation of ATLA, as someone who grew up watching the original animated series, I must say I quite enjoyed it overall & tried to keep an open mind. Like I’d give it a solid 7/10. Episodes 4, 5, & 6 are my personal favorites & standouts to me. The cast I think is good, & since it’s been picked up for seasons 2 & 3, I think they (the core 3) will only get better together as their experiences & chemistry grow. With just this first season though, thus far, my favorites acting & character wise are Zucko, Iroh, Sokka, & Ozai. Not that I think anyone else is awful, those 4 just feel the most..natural to me. I really like how the bending looks. & I think Appa & Momo are adorable. Overall as I said I like it. Is it perfect, no, do I like every choice, no. But it’s enjoyable & I think seasons 2 & 3 will only be better. Excited to see you finish this first season!

I honestly love that it’s not a 1to1 adaptation since, let’s be real here, if it was, then what would be the point when we already have the cartoon? Most of the changes I vibed with, others were a little jarring (everyone and their mother has already gone on about Sokka’s sexism and while I didn’t have much of a problem with it in ep1, it did stick out in ep2 and not in a good way), but I liked that most of the changes that were made added something new to the show that we otherwise didn’t get in the cartoon. Is it perfect? No, not even close. But, I still enjoyed myself and it’s at least much more respectful of the source material than the movie ever was and nowhere near as bad as the movie (also, it is not worse than the movie, y’all are just overreacting)

honestly, a lot of the changes seem weird until you think about how some of the cartoon stuff just won't work in a more serious live action. So some pieces have to be taken out, and then things connected to those things have to be adjusted. Like how when you get to Bumi, his character in this makes more sense for somebody who has been alive and defending a whole city throughout the entire 100 years of war. His cartoon version worked in the cartoon, but wouldn't work here.

I think something to keep in mind is that this adaption is not going to be a carbon copy of the animated series. There are going to be changes cause honestly who wants an exact replica? That would be so boring and predictable. Granted some changes may be unnecessary but point being and this is for anyone watching the series for the first time, please don't compare. You won't have a good time. Personally without sharing any spoilers I thoroughly enjoyed this adaption and I honestly don't mind the changes. It helps it be its own thing. Honestly it feels way more respectable to the cartoon than that movie that doesn't exist. 😂 Anyway I hope what I say doesn't come off as me being critical towards anyone. It's just a word of advice I wanted to share. 😊

The first episode was good. I like action/fighting. The Air Nomads fighting the Firenation was great. I like some of the changes that were made instead of later of getting Aang backstory. We get it right now as we seed how Firelord Sozin and the Firenation kill the Airbenders. Aang fighting the Firebenders was great as well. The Avatar music is playing as well the Sokka vs. Zuko was good. I like the relationship between Aang and Monk Gyatso. As well as the conversation with him (Aang) and Iroh. I like that they nail the personalities of the characters. Especially with Sokka not liking Aang the first time. Zuko anger. Katara is struggling to learn Waterbending. I like how they show the scenes of Aang, Katara, and Sokka arriving at thd Air Temple as it trigger his Avatar State. I like how this episode was condensed with this episode focusing on the first three episodes of season 1. Episode 2 great as we are introduced to Momo, Suki, Avatar Kyoshi and Commaner Zhao. I like the CGI of Momo and Appa. I like how they nailed it with the casting of General Zhao. At first I was concerned with the news that they was gonna make with Sokka when it comes to him being a sexist because I thought the animated series did a fantastic job of having him learn and grow from that mindset. But I did like the changes that they made in the relationship between Sokka and Suki. As well as him getting some training in learning how to fight. As well, Suki is showing him that he doesn't need to be a bender to be a warrior. Which is true. As in return her telling Sokka how jealous that he get to explore the world. I was surprised of the changes that Aang first chat with his previous life would be Kyoshi instead of Roku. But I do like how she has to remind Aang that despite Aang not wanting to hurt anyone but him doing nothing and running away will result in others getting hurt. And now he must take responsibility of being the Avatar. The fight between The Kyoshi warriors and Zhao and hus men was great. As you see Sokka is improving as well Katara getting better at Waterbending as she fight off Zuko and his men. Causing Zuko and Zhao to leave as Aang turns into Avatar Kyoshi. Itoh forming an alliance with Zhao to keep the secret of the Avatar to themselves as Zuko doesn't trust Zhao. As Zhao sent a message to Firelord Ozai who finally makes an experience as they did a fantastic job in the casting of Firelord Ozai with Daniel Dae Kim. But anyway I hope you have a wonderful day. Stay safe, take care and stay amazing Sophia Phan.

It kinda felt like it had no soul, the dialogues are just expostion after exposition, they don't understand the characters (except Zuko/Iroh).. It just feels like the people behind the show do not care for it 😢 The fights were well choreographed and the CGI was pretty good, but that's about it 😅

@@SophiaPhannn I was a fan (not a fanatic, but a fan) of the series after I sat down and watched the entire series about ten years ago. I've been an anime fan for awhile (1980s) and enjoyed the various iterations of Macross, Gundam, Dragonball, Naruto, Bleach, Evangelion, Hunter x Hunter, etc., as well as a few less known stuff like Bubblegum Crisis, Black Rock Shooter, Darker than Black, Jormungand, and others. I felt that the original Nickelodeon animated series was a huge step in the right direction for American animation or "anime", and was also happy to see a series that could connect with children but also serve as a discussion or teaching tool with families, as many social, familial, and international situations occurred in the storylines. When the movie came out, I didn't bother after the previews. It looked so terrible. When this came out, I gave it a shot, and like you, I noticed many changes right away. However, just like I did with The Lord of the Rings, the Jason Bourne series, and the Jack Ryan series (to name a few), I gave it a chance to see if it might be able to stand on it's own. I'd love to hear you give commentary from both perspectives (as if you never saw the animated version then with your knowledge and experience of the original series) after watching each episode, and when you're done with the entire season. I won't spoil anything for you since I've seen the entire thing, but after the first episode, I was satisfied with the effort of the cast and crew members, and wanted to see more of what they did. It was a definite departure from the original storyline, but I thought it was solid to give the background of things and help a new generation understand more of what we came to know as the "beginning" in a visually stunning, impactful way (I don't think anyone could have watched the genocide without tearing up) and I'll await to see if there's anything in the rest of the series that made you feel the same way I did when I was taking it in. I'll be following you for as long as you react to this series, and I may go back and watch your reactions to the originals if I have time to. Aloha and all the best! 🙏🙂

Remember Kanna came to the southern tribe to GET AWAY from the sexism in the northern tribe and the southern tribe itself actively lets its women waterbenders use their bending in battle (Hama) prob hence Katara’s warrior spirit. Plus for using indigenous influences for the water tribe remember a number of indigenous cultures including some whose aesthetics are used here are actually matrilineal and women are given respect, political and religious power. Some cases it’s not the woman marrying into the man’s family but the man marrying into the woman’s family

Ngl I get that the animated show’s characters are like 13 on average but for a live action show, I feel like they all could’ve been aged up. I think part of why the characters in the animated show were kids was because the target audience was kids watching Nick. But for us to take this live action version more seriously I think everyone should’ve been like 18. People watching would relate more and we could ship Aang and Katara lol

Hmm I disagree because a huge component of the show is the fact that they ARE kids. Plus, if they were aged up, people would start riots 😂

@@SophiaPhannn I spose it’d be a whole different show at that point

I love this version of Zhao. It shows off how much of a snake and egotistical he is. They also toned down the aggression and brute force.

Its so funny that she commented of "removing sokka's misogyny" when sokka just said that katara "needs to help more around the village"

The show was mid for me, it was so boring I havent finished it. Casting was amazing for the most part, bending was great, but they used too much cgi imo

As a writer, I don't understand why they did that with Sokka, part of making a good story, you want your characters to be relatable. That means, having flaws and coming away from them. Yes, they kept the pride thing, to a point.... But, yea..... there's no journey making here. It also made the reawakening scene, make no sense. Sokka, KINDA grows on me later, but not much. As a whole, I give the show a 7.9. If you continue, I will slowly give more input. but since these are so Sokka centered, that's my take so far.

They have a slightly different journey for sokka. He still learned a lot and have an arc, so I think it works

As Netflix just greenlit Seasons 2 and 3, I feel like there is nowhere to go but up😄 I have mixed feelings on the season as an adaptation and I felt like the writing and directing held the actors back, but it was better than what we got in 2010 and I am looking forward to what is up and coming!! 🪨🔥
