The reason Zuko is out looking for the Avatar is really a wild goose chase that was a part of Zuko's banishment. Ozai just wanted him out of the way because he hated his son. He didn't think Zuko would actually find anything since they assumed they'd annihilated the entirety of the Air Nomads.
@katiel37688 ай бұрын
Well... Zosin was also looking for the Avatar until his death.. They knew he must have been alive or a new cycle would have begun with a waterbender (e.g. Korra after Aang's death). I think they knew he had to have "hidden" somewhere somehow since the tempels have not shown that another Avatar emerged. Of course one could argue that if the Avatar was killed whilst in the Avatar state then he would cease to exist, I don't know tho if they knew that was possible.. But yes it definitely was a wild goose chase finding him and Ozai did hate Zuko.

Two details I love about the original show: 1. Even though he's supposed to be the villain, Zuko keeps his promise and leaves the Water Tribe alone after he takes Aang, showing that he's already an honorable person. 2. The reason Aang is so good with the Air Scooter is because he invented the technique. It earned him his tattoos and made him the youngest airbending master in history.

They removed all of Zuko's honour. It was meant to be a dual protagonist show and Zuko was trying to redeem something he already had, his issue was trying to be a good person in a corrupt nation. His banishment for not wanting to fight his own dad in agni kai was honourable but seen as weak, this was changed to not only fight his dad but actually had a moment of out classing him. Zuko's agni kai with Commander Zhao ended with Zuko ending it honourable, not wanting to disfigure him like he was by his dad (or kill). This was removed completely. Zuko wanted to capture the avatar to earn his father's respect and love again and return home, this was changed to him wanting the throne, a much less honourable desire. Almost every chance they got they changed Zuko and every other character away from what made their character arcs good and interesting and nuanced. It makes me question whether they actually understood the assignment at all.

It's wild. The new version is supposed to be more "adult"...but it's only that in it's willingness to show violence. OG didn’t NEED to show you the Airbender genocide...just the aftermath, and that to me, is FAR MORE effective storytelling. It was haunting seeing that as a kid and it's still haunting as an adult. The Netflix show just feels like....someone with ZERO media literacy took a crack at retelling the story and kinda misses a lot of the point.
@alittlebitofme078 ай бұрын
I watched the first episode of the new series with my mom and, when I complaied about the exsesive exposure and the constant violation of the 'show not tell' rule, she said ''well, it's obviously made more for kids''. And me, knowing full well that it was supposed to be more 'adult' before watching it, just sat there like ''It might seem crazy what I'm 'bout to say''
@aquele4virou36 ай бұрын
The writing sucks. They show the entire genocide but then have all the impact of it taken away, because Grandma basically does a full exposition of the entire war (that was already done in the first scene), including the entire Katara intro word for word. "Oh there's no airbenders anymore hihihaha" The genocide of the air nomads hits and leaves you gutted because you learn of it WITH Aang. You see his hope die as he sees the skull of his father figure surrounded by fallen Fire Nation soldiers. Even his flashbacks were done a lot better. They spent more time with past Aang there in the live-action and showed nothing but his interaction with Monk Gyatso. In the og, we see him grieve all aspects of his life he loses for being the avatar. His childhood, his friends who don't want to play with him, and finally, they want to take Gyatso away, which is why he runs away. But to believe Aang just went for a little stroll and the moment he was gone was the very moment of the comet and the Fire Nation attack???? He was trying to get back and would have been killed. It goes away with all his guilt, the very heart of his character.

The reason Zuko is in the Southern Water tribe is because if the Aang was dead the next Avatar would be a water bender, also it is implied that the cycle also shifts in the location (between the north and south water tribes, switching between each air temple, etc). So since the last water born Avatar before Aang was from the North the next would be from the south; and Korra was. Plus the Northern tribe has better defenses because they are centralized compared to the sparse communities of the South.

I honestly disagree. The negative characteristics were still there, just presented more subtly, which makes sense since they were aiming at an older audience than the original. Example that people keep talking about: Sokka being sexist and working through that. He is definitely still sexist in the adaptation - but not in the simplified way of saying “boys are better at [fighting, hunting, etc] than girls”. That was a good way to present the issue of sexism to children in the late 2000’s but it wouldn’t make sense in a show for adults in 2024.
@salvatoreruggiero65518 ай бұрын
@@QueenOfTheZombieApocalypse agree. People seem to forget that one thing is to tell a story in 2020 and one thing is to tell a story in 2000. "But it is an adptation" yes, it is, but you can present certain topics in the same way. In the cartoon, Sokka he's strict to the point with Suki by saying that "women cannot fight", but I found interesting the way they portrayed their dynamic in the live action. He seems scared by Suki's presence cause he actually never saw a woman fighting, and this is a form of sexism, but he slowly realizes that his vision is wrong. Of course the sexism is toned down, but it is still there.

As I've always said, if fanboys aren't happy, make it yourselves. I'm a fan of the original anime and while changes were made, they aren't so drastic so as to be snobbish about it. I enjoyed both versions. Honestly, it's so damn frustrating to see people constantly bitch and moan; newsflash, it's an adaptation, not a scene for scene copy. Yes, some elements may be missing, but the crux of the story is still intact and while they've softened some of the characteristics, as you go along you do see those traits come to the fore and development does happen. This is why I cringe when they try to make these live action shows, not because they shouldn't be made, but because of the ever whiny fan base nitpicks to the point nauseating cringe inducing banality. This live action has made many non-fans curious about the anime show and that's a good thing. Sorry to be harsh, but it just seems there's never any pleasing or satisfying people and, perhaps, producers shouldn't try anymore because it really isn't worth the aggravation. That said, season 2 and 3 have been given the go ahead, so we'll have to see how things develop.
@salvatoreruggiero65518 ай бұрын
@@JonInCanada1 the writers (even though i have some complain)clearly went for some kind of slow-burn development of the relationships and personalities. @@ayoogunsakin9223 yes! i can't figure out how to tag the previous commenter who was asking, so please bear with me! ian has never specified which band he's affiliated with (and is not affiliated with any of the 3 federally recognized cherokee nations). one disputed nation has allegedly claimed him, but that nation is neither federally recognized nor recognized by ANY of the 3 legitimate nations. many people have been saying that wanting proof of his indigeneity is reminiscent of blood quantum, but those people don't understand that tribal affiliation has nothing to do with percentages and everything to do with who your people are. the most nefarious thing about all of this is that when people like this claim fake indigenous heritage, they almost always choose to be cherokee ("my grandmother was a cherokee princess"), likely because of how much history was forcibly erased as a result of genocide (see: the trail of tears). above all, it tells me that the casting people didn't approach the known tribes and instead just put out a role for anyone to do with no checks, which is lazy and dangerous on its own. there are so many ways to contact recognized indigenous groups and it's also ridiculous that they didn't bother trying to find someone who was inuk. i'm canadian and there are so many groups for indigenous creatives that it would take about 30 seconds to find an actor in sokka's age range. they also made every character about 20 shades lighter which is its own thing, but it says a lot about what they think is important.

The reason they’re able to “fly” with fire is because of the comet! Anytime the comet is near their fire bending power is at its highest potential and different bending is able to be used

Love your reaction to the animated show :D would love to see more of that. For the Remake (it dosen't exist for me...) I think it's one thing to change the story a little bit to make it....more "serious/for adults" I guess, but they completely took away the important message of the show, all the character development that makes them so iconic and they tell and show you eeeeeverything in your face....there is no mystery to the story or characters, no depth at all.. Aang all of a sudden accepts being the avatar, he's not hiding it at all, because he didn't run away and thusfore has no personal guilt, katara just chilling in the ship takes the haunting vibe of the war, that their tribe already had there, away. It makes more sense for her to be scared, that they wouldn't be allowed to go near that ship ...and oh yeah just one talk to Aang and all of a sudden understands how to bend water and is legit blocking an attack from zuko, who trained much longer..., and my man sokka, having no humor, no sexism .... well to me this Remake is more childish then the animated show and what I've seen and heard it gets worse with every episode 😅

Oooo I have a theory of how to make flying Waterbenders they would have to have a ton of mastery of bending but the other condition is that they can only do it in an area where there's a lot of humidity in the air so it would work in foggy or jungle places so they can use the humidity to "swim"

Stick to the OG animated show. The live action was like a 5/10, it's there, it's okay. I don't like a lot of the changes but is still watchable for the effects and certain characters like Sokka, Zuko, Iroh and Ozai. P.S. love your humor, you guys crack me up!

i resonated heavily with katara’s anger as a young girl since there were none like her. i was sad to see her character watered down (pun not intended) for the live action. to no fault of the actress, she is gorgeous the only thing that made me mad about the live action were the costuming and wigs that looked like it came straight from party city

The differences between these two shows is literally, show don't tell. It's kinda sad the writing is bad. The actors play the characters very well outside the show because they loved the original.

That’s always such a bummer. You can tell the actors really care for the source material but aren’t given too much to work with.

Regarding "how do they know that the Avatar is alive" - Zuko says in the original that the information that the Avatar is the last airbender comes from the Fire Sages. So presumably, there would have been some sort of sign at Roku's temple if the Avatar had been reborn.

My understanding for “why are they trying to kill him and not capture him” is that the fire nation is trying to speed-run having an avatar born in the Fire Nation, so that there’s no shot for anyone to beat them ever. It would also break the cycle, so the last fire nation avatar would be the last Avatar period.

one of the biggest problems for me is that they tell the story without showing it in so many of the scenes. there are so many words and we're not left to figure out anything for ourselves about the world, which you would think they wouldn't do considering most of the audience is probably older and can figure out things, and is familiar with the original story. it's like you can listen to the show without watching it which beat the purpose of making a live action adaption. plus, many of the little things were changd with no reason, like the fact he can fly without the stick. it just made a plot hol about why he fell later instead of flying, so it makes it seems like the entire purpose of his flying scene was the CGI or something, and maybe they didn't go for the glider so it wouldn't look old like when harry potter rides a broom or something. but then again - don't just change it and forget about the plot, at least work it into the story, it felt like they changed things and didn't bother having a reason or actually adapting the story for the changes they wanted to make. also no shade to the actors maybe it's about the director, but they really could have changed the charcters ages and get more exprienced actors that maybe could have also stopped the director's mistakes. I mean, they already dropped the fun childish part of aang so they could have committed

Okay, if *you're* not gonna let it go, then neither am I. Superman didn't have the *option* of surrendering to Zod; not after he already surrendered to him once and Zod proceeded to try to destroy the **entire** world. Even after Supes destroyed the World Engine, Zod said he was going to "take the humans from you one by one". If Superman had left Metropolis to try to draw him away, then Zod would have just gone back and started murdering people one at a time; and we know that's the case because he literally threw Zod into **space** and Zod just dragged him right back to the city. It had nothing to do with inexperience; it was that he literally had no choice, which is also why he needed to kill Zod instead of imprisoning him or reasoning with him. Some times, the hero just doesn't have a choice. This is no kids' cartoon.

Narratively (Story/Writing) I hate the live action series. But I'm conflicted because I love the cast so much. The writing is GOD AWFUL when you know how beautiful ATLA the animated series is. The writing is so f* good! Not sure why every live action gets the script so wrong?! Even some of the changes make sense (obviously it won't be a exactly the same) but then they miss so much of the importance of certain details in the story that later pay off. They just cut them out entirely or mash nonsense together. I hate it so much! AND WHYFT doesn't Aang learn water bending in season one of the live action?! That's literally the entire point of season (book) one!!!
