cakes are a luxury thing. the mellarks, along with katniss's mom growing up as the apothecary's daughter, were part of a merchant class that was more or less middle class. that's why peeta burnt the bread to give to katniss; it was food that could be spared, by only if by accident. the mellarks were still poor enough that they couldn't regularly afford the things they baked, but not so bad they were at risk of dying of starvation, as they at least made consistent money. the merchants sold to the peacekeepers and town officials, and a lot of them sold and bartered covertly. so peeta would probably be designing for birthdays and national holidays if nothing else

Another thing about Foxface’s death is that in the book and the movie she excelled at the plants station recognizing which ones are poisonous and which ones are edible. Considering she was faced with going against Cato, Thresh, Katniss AND Peeta her odds of surviving were basically zero at that point. Katniss is an unreliable narrator on purpose because she can only think about reacting and surviving without really seeing the bigger picture or other motives. She immediately assumes that Foxface ate the poisonous berries on accident because Peeta assumed they were edible. Theres a real possibility that an opportunity to peacefully end her life presented itself and she took it as opposed to a brutal or drawn out death. She wasn’t favored to win, she didn’t have a real weapon, she wasn’t a fighter, and she was malnourished. She was going to die but chose to do it on her terms.

I think in the books it's explicitly stated that foxface ate the berries because she trusted that peeta would not pick and clean something that he wouldn't eat himself, and it makes sense as shed been surviving by stealing from others. I think my main thing with the casting was the fact I remember hearing Katniss was described with features similar to Native American women so that's what I imagined when I first read the books. Don't get me wrong, I love Jennifer in this role and she was definitely one of the best actresses to play Katniss based on her performance alone, but I think there's another layer that could've been added if Katniss was canonically Native American. Like in the books they described the poorer people in her district as having olive skin and dark straight hair, so her and Gale were said to look like they could be related (Haymitch too funnily enough) because they shared these features; but Peeta was from the richer area so he had white features like pale skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes (her mom and Prim too, but Katniss inherited her dad's features). To me, there was something to be said about having the two poorest districts be majority made up of poc since district 11 was described as primarily Black and then district 12 had mainly Native American people and it emphasizes the parallel of the class systems present irl since Panem is meant to be based off of the US. I just always found that really interesting and I was a bit sad they eliminated that aspect of the story in the movies.
@SophiaPhannn Жыл бұрын
I do vaguely remember Katniss being described with olive skin. Given how the districts were divided and how it’s supposed to reflect future America, yeah it makes sense that Katniss was supposed to be poc. Actually if you think about it Katniss is not supposed to be super skinny as most of the people that complained said. Because yes, she was from the poorest part of her district but she grew up with a decent amount of food on her plate until her dad died and then she took that job so it makes sense that she's not super skinny. That's also why she would be a little bit stronger than the other girls from her district, cause Katniss had to do physical activity to hunt, she had to climb trees, run in the woods and all that sort of thing so I think the casting was perfect and the only reason why she was so criticized is bc it was 2010

I pictured her as indigenous, I think book wise even if it was as more coded it seemed pretty important with the divide between seam and merchant people like with peeta and how Peeta’s family would be against him being with someone like Katniss. I wish even that they gave Haymitch black/brown hair even because he’s supposed to look similar to Katniss and not peeta
@kairosvt300011 ай бұрын
she was meant to be native american coded, yeah. the books were supposed to be based on the oppression in the US specifically so it makes sense that district 12 was majorily supposed to be indigenous people and district 11 had majorily black people, aka the two poorest districts / the two most disinfranchised groups in america etc. ALSO when casting katniss for the movie the casting directors specifically searched for white actors only and basically dismissed any women of color who wanted to try out, i believe someone said that they thought that with a white actor, the story would be more generalized and "relatable."

Interesting the financially poorest district and the black and worst treated district are who help start the rebellion because after all systematic poverty/oppression and systematic racism go hand and hand.

I think one thing that people don't consider is that prior to the games and looking at the state of Katniss's life in District 12 girlie probably wasn't thinking much about her future or boys or love or anything like that. So hearing Peeta talk about his feelings for her and then learning that it was all a plot and then leaving the games and going back home to Gale; Gale who in the books Katniss literally says was someone people thought she would end up with mainly because they were always together. Like just imagine what she was going through trying to sort out her own feelings about surviving the games, Peeta's supposed feelings for her, Gale's freauent guiit trip sessions about her doing whatever she had to to survive the games and her own actual feelings towards these two guys. One she bonded with because of the tragic state of the lives growing up and close friendship and the other she bonded on an even deeper level with during and after the games. Bruh if i were Katniss idk how I would have coped with all of that plus being manipulated to be the figure head for a rebellion she never agreed to. Couldn't be me honestly 😂. I must say though I do love Peeta, maybe partly because I love Josh Hutcherson but also because Peeta rocks and he dealt with so much bruh 😭. I also love book Peeta. All versions of Gale suck 😂.

@AHealthyDoseofFran Жыл бұрын
There was a huge theory for Foxface. The first time we see her in the movie she’s matching berry’s and plants to what’s good and what’s not. The theory is that she had the night lock because she knew she wasn’t going to win and would rather d!e on her own terms
@clover2739 Жыл бұрын
I am going to be really annoying but… that’s not true at all. It’s a theory that only works from one scene in the movie, however even then she’s definitely not a expert on identifying plants at all. That training thing is a matching game that to test reflexes and reaction times. It’s nothing to do with identifying edible plants. I’m always confused why people see it as her being a plant expert… she’s just matching images that look the same, that’s not identifying anything or shows any knowledge. The reason why foxface is smart is because she’s cunning, which is why fox is a could part of her name. Not because she knows a lot about survival. In fact her biggest weakness is that she doesn’t know how to find food herself, however she is sneaky so she gets through the games by stealing other tributes food and supplies in small unnoticeable amounts. She did it with the careers pile of goodies the whole time, until katniss blew it up. Especially book wise, foxface also stole katniss and Peeta’s cheese along with the berries, because she was starving since she couldn’t get any food for days. She wouldn’t steal that as well if she was trying to kill herself. When she died she was described as emaciated. She ate them genuinely because she thought they were safe since Peeta was collecting them thinking they were edible. Her downfall was the fact that she knows it’s dangerous to underestimate your opponent but overestimating them is just as dangerous. If Peeta did what he was doing as a trap, foxface wouldn’t have ate the berries. Even if foxface was an expert on plants, nightlock berries only grew on the outskirts of district 12 and katniss even says they weren’t in the training books at all. It’s why Peeta also doesn’t know what they are and katniss does, because katniss went out to hunt illegally because her dad took her and showed her them, Peeta who is a bakers son who hasn’t left the fence wouldn’t have seen the berries in his life. So foxface being from district 5 would’ve have a chance to know what those berries are. In fact, Katniss shouldn’t know what the berries are either, considering that sneaking outside the fence to hunt is illegal and punishable by death, which is why her trick with the berries is even more of a punch in the face to Snow, because it shows more ways that she has been rebelling even outside those games. So it’s not foxface being dumb… or even peeta being dumb, it’s information that they literally wouldn’t have any access to. Plus they look like berries that katniss was picking since they were edible before that in the book as well
@stuffwithsoph8264 Жыл бұрын

Katniss knows these things because her dad was someone who was rebellious and was brave enough to sneak out to hunt when most people wouldn’t and taught Katniss before he died so she has survival skills the majority of district 12 doesn’t, which is why their district is usually goners. Peeta isn’t stupid, he just have no way of knowing this since he’s never been outside the fence and he’s merchant class which is more ‘well off’ than the seam where Katniss is from. He technically isn’t starving for food even if what he eats is extremely stale food no one buys

No one under the age of 14 has ever survived the hunger games. I wonder how old the winners usually are. I'm going to assume 18 because a lot of the capitals kids train and tell their 18 and then volunteer and that's why they win so much. But the fact that no one under 14 has ever won the hunger games or would win the hunger games because the following year remember there was no kids in that one cuz it was all existing winners literally the youngest people in the 75th hunger games were pita and katniss because apparently I mean even there were some people who were still under 18 from the other districts, they weren't the ones chosen. That is just batshit crazy that in 74 years of the hunger games, no one who was 12 or 13 ever won. I don't know if anyone 15 ever won or if any other 14-year-olds ever won. Okay so on the cake decorating thing, I thought that too, but I think I remember in the books - they described the way district twelve is much better than the movies could and Peeta's family and bakery were part of the 'richer' part of the district (kinda like where the mayor and his daughter lived if that helps jog your memory; it helped jog mine😅)

District 12 was sorta divided into 2 parts, a poorer and a richer one. The bakery was making cakes for the richer part, like for the mayor and his friends and visitors. But yeah probably not that many cakes over all.

Gail is 2 years older than katniss. Katniss was 16 year. Also, Gail's name is in multiple times for each year because he's also getting food for his mother and his. I believe three or four little siblings. So yeah, his name is in almost probably the maximum you could have it in. I don't think anyone in the district has it in more than 50

I think they deliberately dressed Katniss in colors that didn’t suit her in the dorms (ie the awful yellow that washed her out) to highlight the fact that she was never able to fully adapt to the capitol or relax in her given space. While the materials might be nice and luxurious, she always looked wrong and uncomfortable whilst wearing it. It really underscores the sense of being a doll or puppet for the capitol, to be dressed up and displayed before being discarded for their entertainment .

That is without Thanksgiving. Thing is called. It's called a cornucopia. That's also what I was picturing but like a metal one of those like tall enough to like a big enough to comfortably walk through and stand on top of me. Whatever I imagine. All the low value stuff would be at the very opening where you've got room to maneuver and run, but you'd have to go deep into the cornucopia to get anything good where you can't maneuver around and you'd have to fight your way out to be a literal sitting duck in the very very back for the best price, so I imagine that's how it would be. And yeah

You know everyone always questions how Peeta painted himself into a rock but nobody ever asks what the hell he even used to make the paint. 👽🤔 Also as I remember from the book, the cornucopia actually did look like an actual cornucopia but made of gold, they climbed up the weaves in the metal.

12:48 To be fair, Katniss is unfamiliar with the Capitol's synthetic bows because she's had a homemade, natural one her whole life, and Haymitch gave her the great advice to not practice her archery in front of the Careers so they wouldn't know she can shoot. Which would improve her chances of getting the bow bc if they didn't know she could use it, they'd be less likely to take it first. And only the Gamemakers would know she's good with a bow, so they'd make sure to include one for her in the weapons Cornucopia, so her chance at survival just makes their TV show "better."

Katniss being impulsive and her tendency to act before thinking were what made her such a hero. She refused to play by the Capitol's rules even when she didn't realize how deeply her actions defied Snow. His actions were based on his emotionless, self-serving, and sadistic nature while hers were founded on her compassion and caring for fellow human beings.

I read the first book maybe 2 weeks ago. And I’m glad I read the book after. Some may think that’s weird but I was an avid reader and it’s hard to read and be engrossed in a book hear that it’s being adapted in film only for the film to be trash in your opinion because of such a high standard you had in your head. I plan to read the 2nd end of Nov. In this reverse order I get to appreciate the film on its own as well as the book separately

I gotta be honest, when I read the books and watched the movies growing up, I never really understood Katniss and Peeta. I felt that they didn't have much real chemistry, at least from Katniss' perspective. But I was never team Gale either. I didn't really see Katniss with either of them to be honest. I felt like the main part of the books were the Games and Katniss' experience. Don't get me wrong, I do think Katniss would probably have died without the whole Peeta pretend love story, but that's the thing - it was mostly just pretense, at least on Katniss' part. I don't remember there being much _real, romantic_ feelings from her when I read the first book, so thought there wasn't any real chemistry between them. In the movie I still think the characters don't have that much chemistry but the actors themselves do, if that makes sense? Like Katniss and Peeta, I still don't get it/see it as an actual real romance in the first movie and book (and the second to be fair) but I think Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson did have chemistry. Especially when he said "Now I know I can't let you go. Stay... Please?" I think the actors had great chemistry there, the best in the whole movie, and the line delivery was great. But yeah growing up when I watched the movies and picked the books, I never really picked sides between Gale and Peeta because I felt like while she did seem to have some kind of feeling for Gale in the books, he was a lil... oddly controlling? Especially in the movies. I kinda liked Gale's character more in the books than the movies (obvious until Mockingjay but yeah). And I never really thought Katniss had any _real_ feelings for Peeta. Not that she disliked him, but I didn't feel romantic chemistry on her part from the book (and the movie because it was based on the book although the kiss had more spark in the movie). I was just neutral on them. But yeah, in the 3rd book obviously my opinions of both Gale and Peeta as Katniss' love interests. I think Peeta was a good/better choice but not that their relationship was necessarily healthy/formed healthily (I mean that's not really their fault that they had to go through all that and their relationship is based almost entirely on being in traumatic situations together/trauma bonding but still). But to be honest I could still see Katniss ending without a partner or just with someone who wasn't Peeta or Gale. Some people have said it would be a lonely ending/sad for her but I think... yes and no. Yes, she has experienced devastating losses which is sad and lonely, but I don't think romance necessarily solves that? I think she could have still had a good ending (fulfilled, happy, secure, etc.) even if she was single. Or if she got together with some unnamed character by the end, that could also be a good ending and it would be a refreshing supportive relationship with someone who didn't have the same trauma. (Again, some may argue that she wouldn't be able to bond with someone/an outsider the same way as with Peeta, because they were in the Games together, but I think if that's true then that in itself is sad, almost implying that she is too broken to bond romantically with anyone else who isn't also traumatised by death and murder). I mean if she (the character) was happy with Peeta and was able to kinda move on and (SPOILER) even have kids at the end, then that's fine by me because he is by no means a bad love interest or person. I just didn't feel much genuine romantic feeling from Katniss until like the 3rd book. I do like him as a love interest a bit more now, but I still think they had no real chemistry in the first two books at least from Katniss' side - and it's entirely in Katniss' POV with her internal monologue, so you can't even really get to know Peeta's emotions during their interactions. But that's different in the movies. I like Peeta in the movies a bit better as a love interest because the actor is obviously able to show more with his face, and you can _see_ the chemistry between the actors, especially in the kiss scene when he begged her not to go. So yeah he's warming up to me but growing up I never understood either Gale or Peeta as love interests. Lmao how did I end up typing this much???
@SophiaPhannn Жыл бұрын
See I used to think this when I was younger too because at face value, yeah Katniss was pretending to be in love with Peeta. However, I think there were a lot of small moments where Katniss did show love towards Peeta. It was just buried through denial and the fact that there were bigger things to worry about LOL because Katniss was a teenager who was essentially acting as a mom to Prim, then she got thrown into the games, and so on and so forth. Romance wasn’t really on the forefront of her mind. She was a very complex character with a lot of trauma, so it’s not surprising that her feelings wouldn’t be as straightforward or obvious! But I understand that everyone’s interpretations are different
@dotdotdot...176 Жыл бұрын
@@SophiaPhannn I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way (or used to)! What you said makes total sense; the games in reality are no place for romance so obviously it wasn't really on her mind. And I do like that while it was pretense for a while/at first, Katniss couldn't deny she felt something for him. I actually really like Peeta as a character himself, I always have, I just didn't understand/see him as a real love interest (especially in the books) if that makes sense. I like how he's so... pacifist yet still wants to let the Capitol know that they don't own him, which he says right in the first one. Which also makes it that much more tragic when they get him later on and brainwash him. I really love his character arc and I do think he genuinely liked Katniss for a long time, which I liked to see (especially when literally seeing Josh Hutcherson acting so in love, it was pretty cute ngl) but I just felt like there wasn't much real romantic feeling response on her part for so long, if that makes sense. I'm not saying she didn't care about him, it was very clear that she did care a lot even in the books, but I didn't think she was truly _romantically_ attracted to him till much later in the story. It was also iffy because until the 3rd one, Gale was still very much an "option" as a love interest, and they kept kissing, so I wasn't sure what to think about how she truy felt about Peeta. But I still prefer him as a love interest in general at the end though over Gale. And I realise as I get older that I keep warming up to Peeta as a love interest more and more; he's sweet. Today rewatching that scene where they kiss and then he says "now I know I can't let you go... stay with me, please" I was totally SIMPING ngl. So I guess it was just Katniss' response to him/his feelings that had me uncertain. I've also seen a couple other reactions where they're like "girl, for him I would have already FOLDED" or "he's perfect, I'd marry him" 😂. But as you said, there wasn't really time for real romance and stuff when survival was the priority, and it was probably difficult even back in 12 because they were both so traumatised (Katniss' PTSD was so intense😢) and maybe also awkward because of Katniss and Gale's uncertain relationship after the first games. Also, "fake" affection probably turns into real love quite easily, especially when she already cared for him deeply as a person. Thank you for replying queen, sorry for these long ass comments!
@blueyeshadow2738 Жыл бұрын
@@SophiaPhannnyeah it’s at first pretense for her and also that she doesn’t have time to think about that in midst survival but it’s generally agreed upon that katniss falls in love with Peeta in catching fire. It’s just that 1) she’s in denial 2) her love language isn’t words it’s acts of service, it’s physical touch so when we were younger we couldn’t that she actually did love him she couldn’t say it out loud for a long time
@cyagami90 Жыл бұрын
I do have to disagree on her not ending up with someone who knows her pain though. Like most of her nations people theyre all pretty familiar with suffering but only fellow tributes are familiar with that added horror and what it comes with and being used for a revolution against your will. Sure you can have a relationship outside of that and its probably healthier but it doesnt suit Katniss' personality imo. I think she needs someone who understands the pain but can say its still no excuse to be a monster bc from anyone else its patronizing. Where as from peeta its the truth to her.
@tiffanykim2773 Жыл бұрын
I think her true feelings for Peeta came out in book 2 during the 2nd games but then after everything that happened her developing feelings had to be relegated to the back burner. In the books though we do learn that they were definitely trauma bonding after the first games and thus it turned into a truer love there after.

No but you have a point about the cake decorating girl! District 12 is one of the poorer, if not the poorest. Not only would just basic food be the priority, but also what would they have to decorate the cakes? I'm not saying they couldn't be resourceful or something, I just mean that they lived in poverty and each family/person had to work so hard just to get food. Also, even they had icing and stuff sometimes, for Peeta to have that level of detail in painting was odd. I think maybe he just ended up talented/skilled at painting anyway, but the cake reason makes not much sense.
