I always love the way this movie looks. It’s a unique style that seems to be exclusive to this film. It is trying to be a Disney or Bluth film story and character wise, but the style of the animation, colors, and lighting is not like any other animated film from the 90’s.

I dont mean to argue or make any negative light but i will say this. Is it ever really TRYING to be either of those movies tho? I think ppl get a bit over their assumptions when it comes to styles of animation n shit....like....guys...its a movie about dinosaurs comin back to new york city! WHOA! COULDA YOU IMAGINE?! whereas land before time was all LIFE SUCKS! YOUR MOM DIES WHEN YER 2YRS OF AGE FIND YOUR WAY TO YOUR GRANDPARENTS! HERES A FUCKIN MAPLE LEAF! NOW GIT GOIN AND MAKE FRIENDS WITH EVERYONE CEPT FOR CERA. SHES A DICK. And i think during the 90s was when dinosaurs were THE BEES KNEES. Everyone wanted to tell a story about em in some way or another. Trying to use the same characters? I would have to disagree...aside from there being dinosaurs i dont see how WERE BACK is trying to be a carbon copy of anything than just a fun idea. A movie to shut your brain off too. Yknow? But thats just of course my opinion. 🦕🦖🐊🦈

the start of the movie reminded me of the land before time, but i don’t remember what that came out edit: just got to the bit where they mentioned land before time

@@WonkyClownRibsThe Land Before Time was 1988, this was 1993. So yeah, I'm sure the resemblance was intentional. This was the second film done by Amblimation, Steven Spielberg's short-lived animation studio at Universal. Their first was An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. So looking like Don Bluth was something they absolutely knew how to do 😆

@@jbwarner8626 Do you know they were gonna make a 2D movie of Cats, based on the Broadway musical and the book “Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats” (which the musical is based on)? Looking at the production art for “Cats” makes me wish it happened; as it shares the same artstyle of cats as they did with “Fievel Goes West”.

Fun fact: there was a deleted scene where Screw eyes explains to the dinosaurs how he lost his eye. As a kid he took a nap under a tree when a berry fell near his eye and than a crow swoops in after the berry and takes his eye instead. He develops a fear of crows and eventually becomes insane and obsessed with conquering his fear and exploiting other peoples fears. That’s why he surrounds himself with crows and has a circus centered around scaring people. A good chunk of animation and pre-voice work were done. A shame they took it out.

Here's a crazy thought: What if Captain Neweyes started gathered up all of the dinosaurs, starting with Rex and his friends, but this time in order to save them. To do that, he created an oasis for them that would later be known as the Great Valley seen in the Land Before Time.

I actually love this movie even if people think it's dumb. I adored just how the dinos just accepted their newfound humanity, the wishes were so damn special, the demon circus was something I'd absolutely want to attend as a weird adult. No idea why the crows devoured screweyes. The story is solid for most of the way and I felt a real connection with the kids, being a neglected child myself who just wanted to run away and be happy. There's a lot of really good moving parts to the story.

I don't think many folks point this out, but one thing I still love about this film is how beautiful it is art and color wise. The inside of the ship is so warm and calming, the circus is appropriately nightmarish with it's toxic greens and deep hues, and the parade scene just captures the vivid color against the monochrome city. This movie is seriously underappreciated as a visual feast, with or without it's bonkers plot lol

Well, Saber, you aren't alone as I loved this film as a kid! It's a pity that it bombed & some consider it a bad film, but I think it was judged way to harshly & cause everyone tried to compare it to other films like Land Before Time & Disney! Heck, some even tried to compare it to Jurassic Park, which I personally feel was wrong as its an animated film! Sure, it's not anything mind-blowing, but to me, it's a solid film for kids & I always did like the song, Roll Back The Rock!

The funny thing about the contract the kids signed is that in many cases, minors can't be held to the terms of a contract until they reach the age of majority. In other words, a minor has the right to opt out of a contract, even if the other party is an adult and is bound by the terms. Therefore, from the minor's perspective, a contract in most instances is a good faith agreement but not a legally enforceable one, so yeah, ScrewEyes didn't have a legal leg to stand on, not that the kids or Dinosaurs were legal savvy enough to know that its not really a plot hole as the kids & Dinosaurs are likely ignorant of contract law! Though given how the blood turns into a signature, you could argue it is some kind of magical contract. Thus, there might be consequences for breaking it, especially since it was literally signed in blood!

There's a deleted scene that makes Screweyes a much more interesting character and explains why he's missing an eye, why he's obsessed with scaring people, and why he keeps the crows around despite the fact that he's clearly scared of them. It also kinda frames the scene at the end with the crows in possibly a more abstract light - not that they literally took him away, but that once he lost his circus, he was so overwhelmed by his fears and that he went off into obscurity and was never seen again. Possibly. This movie's fuckin' weird.

Also, the flock taking down ScrewEyes at the end was awesome & makes perfect sense as us modern birds are avian dinosaurs, so the crows were just helping out their non-avian cousins (while Rex should have feathers, it was pretty common in the 90s to depict T-Rex & Raptors without them & we have to remember this film was made by Steven Spielberg's company Amblimation & did feature an Easter egf of a Jurassic Park movie poster as the film was released the same year as Jurassic Park)! Saber, your first grade self had good taste. uwu No, but really, I legitimately enjoyed this film as a kid as well. I feel your need of nostalgia here. ;w; We're Back may not be the best movie out there, but damn do I love that it is a weird romp AND ROLL BACK THE ROCK IS A GREAT SONG. Though, I do agree with Rishi on wishing the film would have leaned a little more into the darker aspects. Even as a kid, I found that angle enormously more interesting than the rest of the film. I also haven't seen this film in ages, but definitely do see the strangeness with the digital aspects of the animation. The shift to digital colouring for animation (or even adding 3D elements) at this time was indeed rougher for some studios than others, and it is a little jarring to see it today for sure. We've come a long way on that.
