It makes me feel proud as a West Virginian to hear you both say such nice things about the state. We often hear negative stereotypes about West Virginia and the people. I live and work in OH and will be moving "Home" to WV when I retire in 5 years! It's truly a special place. Thanks so much for highlighting some of the things you've discovered. Mt Storm is an excellent place to fish BTW!!!

I used to do a lot of spelunking in the state back then. Been all the way thru the Sinksagandi (sp) cave from one end to the other. As well as some others. Good memories. Worst case of poison ivy I've ever had was gotten near Davis And Elkins college. Long story best not told lol. It was a six hour drive back then from home to Salem. I hitchhiked home many a weekends back in the day.

What a nice video today. I loved every second of it. I'm also in love w forests. Grew up in one. My family moved to Iowa in 69. I went to high school there. Flat, lots of corn and beans, and pig farms. We came back here, NC foothills, mom, dad, brother in 73, me in 75. Six months later, we all moved to the center of Texas. Four months later, I came back here!! Could not stand Texas. I spent six weeks, summertime, in Sioux Falls, SD. Too cold. From Iowa to Texas, mid-west states, I spent time. Nothing there beats the forests and mountains of NC or the East States from SC up. Melissa mentioned the smell. Right on the spot! The lush forests put off so much fresh oxygen, scented by the cool forest vegetation, it's heavenly. I've never had any desire to go any further west than the Mississippi. Fall and spring colors are also heavenly. Yessir, Virginia, and West Virginia, up into Canada, are the most beautiful places on Earth. They can keep the hot, dry, desert like land out west. They can also keep the hot, overcrowded, overpriced beaches too! I'll stay and finish out my life here, in the forests. And, how cool to run into people who know you, wherever you go!! This is and has always been a great channel!!! Thank y'all so much for sharing. 👍🚜❤️🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸

Great video, Mike and Melissa. As a lifelong West Virginian, I have lots of stories to tell. I was working in Davis when the November 1985 Flood hit. My parents lived in Keyser and I drove there (probably foolishly) to spend the night. All of the area from just outside of Thomas to the Mt. Storm power plant was flooded and water was running all over the road. It was a pretty scary drive since it was on top of the mountain. The next morning when I returned to Davis, the water was shooting straight out from all of the spliways at the power plant dam. I drove over to Blackwater Falls and could only get part of the way down the walkway from the mist rising and all of the water. You could not see any of the rocks at the falls. One guy was there with a video camera filming it. It would be an entertaining film to see. I wish that I had had a camera, because it was a once in a lifetime occurence (hopefully, because of all of the damage that occured). It was truly an example of the fury of nature. Here are a couple of suggestions for you: the Buckwheat Festival in Kingwood, next week. I personally like the buckwheat cakes done at the church in Masontown, but you can get them several others places. Another is the Cass Scenic Railroad. You should take the train to Bald Knob or the new one to Durbin. Either of them will reward you with more beautiful fall scenery and a nice ride. You will want to plan ahead because it is a fairly long drive to get there in time for the trip.

Just incredibly beautiful anytime of year, but especially in the fall! Peak color is usually around the 2nd week of Oct. There is endless things to do around the Summerville dam area and the New river plus the Gulley river. Hiking white water rafting fishing mountain biking just so much. I white water rafted there for 10 straight years and thought that I would live there someday, but life changed after getting married which we honeymooned there staying in a cabin, road horses and white water rafted YES as part of our honeymoon. We started hiking the hills of the Smokies in Tennessee, which is another great state for those kinds of activities. We probably have spent more time during our marriage touring the areas around Sevierville to Nashville, with Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg which are wonderful areas. Mike said it right though, there are too many people that go there now that tourists overrun the area and have driven land prices through the roof. Air B&B's are everywhere now. Thanks for showing us your adventures, please keep doing more of that.

As a born and raised West Virginian, I love our state! I live north west of Charleston and have visited all the locations you mentioned quite a few times as a kid and an adult. If you like water falls id suggest the falls of hills creek, its a nature trail with 3 water falls along the way each one taller than the last and its a very nice hike. The other id suggest is Cass Scenic Railroad, they have the largest collection of operating geared steam locomotives in the world and have 2 different train rides up the mountain or a ride alongside the Greenbrier river. Great place to check out especially if you love scenery and industrial history

I have seen every animal (big game & small game) imaginable, and all kinds of small birds and water fowl. There is nothing like country living. I had the joy of growing up in a small town, in the country, in Vt., in a valley area, with beautiful fields all around, along with mountains & hills. Enough rambling. Blessings from Rick, in N.H.

I love that waterfall!, we've learned that here in southeastern, ohio there are so many areas all around us to just drive on these back roads and enjoy the countryside!. We've had a lot of bear thickening up around us, 5 years ago it was 95 degrees out at 10:30 in the morning I was mowing on the tractor sweating a lot so i parked under a tree and took a break!. I opened the cooler and cracked a beer open and a few minutes later here comes a bear out of the woods crossing the field into the woods on the other side, I was so shocked I never even thought about getting a pic with my phone. We've seen them on trail cams and on the backroads but never like that day mowing!. Theres nothing like enjoying the wildlife!.

Howdy neighbor!!! lol I'm far south of you guys. Am about 30 min from Spruce Knob. I'm sure you've noticed you cannot go directly north or south in WV. I think mother nature made it that way so travelers would enjoy the scenic beauty. Those fishers are mean, will go thru your arm like a chainsaw. Thieves too, Shawn James lost a nice deer hide he was going to tan by one. As for the bears, I recommend you get bear proof storage boxes for outside for "all" your food. Better mount them to an anchor or they will walk off too...at least a ways. Never keep any food inside your cabin, its just asking for trouble. Thanks for another awesome video, love you guys...be safe.

I knew exactly where you were: Dolly Sods and Blackwater Falls. Recognized the Bear Rocks area, the Laneville Bridge, the steps down to Blackwater Falls, driving through Thomas, the road into Laneville (no guardrails when I was a kid...daddy would honk on the curves to alert any oncoming cars...I still do) etc. Although I am from Morgantown, this is where I "grew up"....camping, picnicking, picking blueberries and cranberries, etc. I lead the Dolly Sods tour for the West Virginia Wildflower Pilgrimage over Mothers Day weekend. I also did my MA thesis from UNC, Chapel Hill in the late 1960's on "The Flora of Alder Run Bog, Tucker County, West Virginia"....near the campground.

Lived in WV when I was a kid. Best six years of my life! Lots of friends, fun and growing up there. Filing away the secret for down the road.

Good one Mike & Melissa... Living in the north central highlands of VT I look forward to the change of colors each fall, my favorite season of the year, native corn on the cob, pumpkins just around the corner if they aren't out alrready... Despite all the rain, we had an excellent strawberry harvest very recently. Back in 1983 my father & I did a motorcycle trip down through your area. The Blueridge Parkway was at peak foliage on the 3rd night of our trip, [ Oct, 11 ] with 1100 miles under our belts at that point, we set up camp only to awake to hard driving rain in the morning. We road as far as the base of MT Mitchell & got off the parkway, slowly & carefully, wet downed leaves covered the road as we made it to the sunlit valley... Bill... :

So cool to see the different "critters" that have made their appearance on your channel especially since your possession of the West Virginia property. . Your channel also exemplifies how entertaining and inviting you are able to bring to your audience that most firewood channels wouldn't even consider. With the intro, I was actually thinking Utah or someplace out west on one of your trips. Great story about the bear siting (nice job Melissa), and meeting Rick and his buddies on their cycles! John Denver's "Almost heaven, West Virginia"...Love the fall colors changing (proving change is good)!! You are correct WV may be the best kept secret and would Love to visit your property someday!! Looking forward to seeing you at Bunyan in a couple weeks!!

I notice that when you are both talking - she interupts you but you never interupt her. You are a smart man. Enjoyed your trip.

It was nice to hear my old hometown mentioned in your video, Waynesburg, PA. Every year I get homesick for the area as it's beautiful this time of year. As is WV. I ran a restaurant in Morgantown decades ago & lived on the back side of Cheat Lake. Miss the area a lot until it snows. LOL
