Hey Mike & Melisa, I have been following y’all now for about a month or so and I throughly enjoy your channel. While I don’t have a sawmill, a firewood operation, or construction equipment I get so drawn into what you do. I am a kind of intermediate woodworker and have learned several things about both woodworking and lumber by watching y’all. And I also have to say that I do agree with you from a political stance. My dad was a 23 year U. S. Navy veteran and while he was from Nebraska and my mom was originally from here in South Carolina, her parents moved to just outside of Annapolis Maryland when she was a young girl. I was born at the U. S. Naval hospital in Annapolis at the Naval Academy. While we lived in many places during dad’s career we lived in Maryland until my early 20’s and I spent a lot of time up around your WV property and some time up in the western Pa. area as well. I do really enjoy your channel and have also watch some of your wife and daughter Eva’s channels as well. Keep up the fantastic content on all 3 channels. I now live in northwestern South Carolina and while I do enjoy this area very much, there are many aspects of the Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania area that still hold a special place in my heart. You’ve asked several times about fuel prices in different areas. Here in the Spartanburg/Greenville area diesel is currently $4.39 for road diesel, not sure what off road fuel prices are as I have nothing that uses it. But like I said, I really enjoy the channel, keep up the great job you do running it.

Great video Mike. I had a wonderful boss who had the same advice, " don't worry about things you can't control". We sometimes had 12-14 planes down for maintenance and it was a mad house in the shop. Often parts shortage or unforeseen issues cropped up that blew schedule and people would get tense. But it was out of our control. That's when the boss would calm things down with the famous statement. Thanks from Early Branch, SC . Looking forward to fall and winter here in the low country.

I watch your channel from Bavaria, Germany. I grew up in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan and spent days, weeks and years making firewood with my dad. We only heated with wood. We had 3 woodstoves plus a wood fired sauna that heated all of our household hot water. I remember one time we were asked to write an essay in school about what we did on Labor Day weekend. We, as a family, had gone out in the woods to harvest fallen trees and cut them into firewood. My teacher said this is no family outing!! My dad had several different kinds of splitting machines, but there is nothing so satisfying as learning how to split wood by hand. My dad taught us when I was 11 and my sister was 10.

Hi Mike. As I watch you split firewood, it reminds me of the days I split wood. My cousins and I sold a cord of Live Oak for $30 and $35 delivered. We used a 8 foot bed pickup and a horse trailer. One of the best books I read recently was Cache Lake Country by John Rowlands. Not really a history book but I think the watchers of this channel would appreciate this wisdom about the woods, woodcraft, nature and a tale of self reliance. There are so many great illustrations and how-to’s that are fun to recreate in modern times. Just a lot of fun.

Good books anything by Louis l’Amour. I’m from Central California east of Modesto. Unfortunately today’s economy will preclude any long trips including Paul Bunion show. I very much enjoy watching your channel I grew up in the logging woods. My dad was a feller and ran exclusively Stihl equipment the legendary 090 with a 48” bar mainly cutting old growth yellow pine, sugar pine, Doug fir, and Cedar. He worked in the sierra’s north of and south of Yosemite National Park. In the winters and during summer vacation I would go up and follow him around as his pack mule, with the gas can, bar oil, sack of tools and files for keeping the chain sharp, and of course the all important lunch box and canteen. In the winter we wood cut firewood mainly downed oak we had spotted while we were cutting timber during the summer. Growing up doing this convinced me to talk to an Air Force recruiter after graduating high school, where I spent the next twenty years. Dad worked on another few years and then changed professions. But his tenure in the woods was twenty five years. And today at 92 years of age I’d still hate to make him mad enough to give me a whooping… lol… 😂

Dave from Melbourne, Ontario Canada. I'm not a reader so I can't help you out with a book recommendation. I bought a set of 3M headphones after you recommending them and I love them. I just listen to music and it helps me to not miss any calls or messages when I'm making noise. I'm with you on the wood stacking. it's not the greatest job in the world but it is a good feeling when you take a tree from start to finish and make a nice stack of wood or fill and IBC tote. Also like you I don't worry about what I can't controlled. I'm retired now but when I was working there was always those people that got all bent out of shape about some policy change or something like that. I would tell them to either do something about it or stop talking about it because all the talking is just going to get everyone worked up. If it's going to happen it's going to happen and getting all worried about it isn't going to change anything. Dave

Hey Mike I have been watching from near the start of your channel. Got my L2501 based largely on your L3901 experience. I make maps for a living, mostly subsurface, but a fun exercise is to use Google Earth, not maps, to look at aerial images of your place from the past. There is a tool bar that allows you to change the imagery by year of the pictures they have for your area. You can go way back when your wood-yard was lined with windrows of firewood and before.

I am on the 5-acre old farm my parents bought in 1937 just off University Avenue in Morgantown, WV. I can hear the games and the band practicing from my home. I do a lot of mowing w/ my Simplicity Garden tractor as there are 2 large fields in addition to what I call the lawn. I also have a 17 cu ' cart from Lowes which I use to haul brush, etc. I have a battery chain saw, pole cutter, and hedge shears (great for briar thickets, etc.). It allows me to take care of the place myself. I like your choice of listening. I usually listen to either WAJR from 12:00-3:00 and then KUSC (a classical music station from southern CA). I do not listen to news per se and am very selective as to what I listen/watch (no TV since 2013).

Greetings Mike, Melissa, Hunter, Eva, and all the emerging branches of the Morgan family tree! I’ve been a fan since middle double digit video numbers and have watched almost all the earlier ones. I’ve learned a lot along the way, much of which helps with operations on the western Ozarks farm, running the old Ford 3000 or either the old or new chainsaw. The farm is mixed hardwood, mostly oaks, hickory, sycamore, walnut, hackberry, some small wild cherry, and dogwood. Elms mostly have died off. I wish the locusts would develop a disease like elms did. I’ll tolerate the also-thorny Osage Orange for its beneficial uses. Anyway, we’re in NCNC now to be near kids and grandkids, so my practical applications for what Mike teaches me happen in spurts a couple-three times a year. I haven’t developed a taste for non-fiction in retirement after being force fed management and self-improvement books while working. I listed some current fiction writers I’ll follow in a reply to Jack Lachman below. I appreciate your suggestion of Spotify as a podcast source - mostly I’ve been sourcing from podcasters directly. But I’m going to have 15 hours to listen twice before Thanksgiving, so it would be good to find a couple audio books. Re the thing you can control - that resonates, but there’s one more level that might be helpful that I learned somewhere along the career. Consider a circle encompassing what you can control, which is what you mention worrying about. Then outside that circle is a whole pile of things you can influence to some degree. Draw (mentally) a second circle around that. Everything else is totally out of our influence, let alone control. And definitely not helpful to worry about. It is often helpful to ponder things we can influence, especially those things close to but just outside the control circle. And by worrying, I’m sure you mean thinking about what to do about things and not just fretting over them, right? Good video - lots to think about!

Years ago a buddy of mine who also grew up in Hamilton Ohio worked summers in Idaho as a hunting guide and horseback trail guide had a special client history professor that he guided through Idaho the length of the Lewis and Clark trail. When we went bear hunting in the Idaho mountains he pointed out a number of historical places that the professor had included in one of the best historical accounts of the expedition that I have read, Undaunted Courage. After reading that I poured into other works that the history professor had written about Eisenhower and World War II. One of the books was made into a mini-series Band of Brothers. I would recommend any of the books that the history professor, Stephen Ambrose, had written.

We cut all our own firewood and do all of the work ourselves. I especially like it when you talk about your thoughts and philosophy. I understand how keeping up on the world situation can get to you. I had to find out on my own till I came to the same conclusion as you have, take care of your own situation and control only what you can. I love all the power equipment you have and how they would make my life a lot easier. I have a 32 hp John Deere but wish I had a small dozer. I wish you all the best in your life, Chris

Hi Mike, JT here (rubbing together the hands of anticipation 😀). I’m from Banbridge, Northern Ireland. I enjoy doing most of the things you do but on a tiny scale. Now I’m retired I spend my days maintaining my trails, pruning trees with my battery chainsaw and 8 inch pruning saw. I make enough firewood to keep our wood fires going all winter. Couldn’t love it more and all you do resonates so much with me. I love to listen to audiobooks when doing all this as well as mowing the lawn. (Bose Bluetooth headphones - they’re so comfy and surprisingly durable). I prefer mostly fiction (we have that nonsense around election time too and I keep exposure to that to a minimum). I listen to a wide variety of books. The Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly is great. One of my go tos is the Lord of the Rings trilogy. For non fiction I enjoyed Tim Peake’s autobiography, Limitless (he’s an English astronaut). Loving your channel. Keep up the good work.

I listen from the Pensacola, FL area although I grew up on a farm in central PA. BTW, this week I got a hand-written T-note from y'all for the license plate I mailed to you--Kudos to Melissa for adding that personal touch---it's a labor of love. I, too, listen to Glenn Beck...and audio books. Since you enjoy history (you're a man after my own heart since I am a college history professor) I recommend two audio books from the Vietnam War which occurred as you and I grew up. The first is called "Hunter Killers" which tells the story of F-105s which set out to destroy N Vietnamese SAM sites. The second is called "Tap-Code" which is about Smitty Harris who was a Vietnam POW for 8 years! He is still alive at age 94 and lives in Tupelo, Miss. Keep up the common sense dialog on your videos!

Small world that you buy your trailers from Greenford Tractor Sales. My older brother worked for the family in the early 2000s. Great quality trailers and family. We live in Ransomville, New York (rural Niagara county) on the shore of Lake Ontario. I thing listening to smart people, whether you agree with them or not, helps keep your brain active. I have bought a lot of books after hearing the author talk on a podcast. Keep the good work.
