Too bad kids today don't understand that this is how adults used to behave. Gracious, self-effacing, virtuous, humorous and confident. I remember being surrounded by attitudes like this when I was a child - not a single victim in sight. While a man of great means and fame, Liberace embodied these character attributes. How I wish these values would return.

@veronica carlson Back in the day, the celebs didn't feel the need to separate. Palm Springers wouldn't bother them. Barry Manilow's first house is right on the street too. Celebs with homes in The Movie Colony are on the street but they've hidden themselves behind big hedges and fencing.
@caribbea4 жыл бұрын
@veronica carlson The ones I just mentioned weren't on the same street as Liberace, but they were all on that side (west) of Palm Canyon. I meant they were on a street unhidden by hedges and fences. I just remembered that Marilyn Monroe and the Elvis/Priscella honeymoon cottage are also both on a street and not behind any kind of fortress. It's the celeb who live in The Movie Colony that have hidden themselves so well. I've had visiting friends who want to see celeb homes so I would drive them around to see the ones that are out on the open. They're always disappointed by the ones in The Movie Colony. I also take them out to where they can see the roof line of Manilow's house. Used to be you could go all the way up the mesa and see his house but I've heard he got tired of people hanging out by his driveway and now there's a gate at the head of the road. I was in Liberace's neighborhood a few months ago and noticed that it hadn't changed much.

Sylvester (before he died of AIDS, in 1988) attended the Church of God In Christ. Liberace had his home blessed by a priest and said he was religious. Back when you could smoke without feeling like a social leper. I remember being able to smoke at my desk in the office I worked at in the 1980’s. You were allowed to smoke on the bus, in the cinema, in pubs and restaurants. Now, we smokers are herded into a “designated smoking area”. They’ve even banned menthol cigarettes now here in the UK.
@crowtein61044 жыл бұрын
Liz Ion Exactly! I’m not sure if it’s any better here in Southern California when it comes to what seems to be a shamming of those that smoke in public. I don’t believe it’s the governments place to tell business owners they aren’t allowed to have customers smoke inside! If they want to allow people to smoke be it in smoking or non smoking sections than that’s on them. If people want to go to a restaurant or Pub that allows smoking they will, and if not they won’t. It’s that simple!

Interesting interview. "I started as a serious musician" reflects an unusual humility and self deprecating analysis. Very impressive.

@Mary Deakins Don't agree. Like Elvis, I think he loved the persona he created that his fans worshipped. He was the highest paid entertainer for a long period. Nobody matched him. No classical pianist could match his earnings. He was one of a kind and knew it. He might have considered other paths, but, never seriously. He gave his career a lot of thought and cultivated it. This interview reflects he gave his career alot of thought and wanted his legacy preserved. I don't believe he had any regrets except perhaps the way he died and that his legacy was tarnished and unpreserved.
@marias75994 жыл бұрын
Mary Deakins I don’t think so. It seemed as if his purpose from the begging was to introduce classical piano to American audiences and the only way to do it was by making it entertaining. That way people would keep interested. I watched a video of one of his concerts in London that actually made me see that. He talked to the audience about the history of the Albert Royal Hall, Chopin, Mozart and the different kinds of pianos there are. Then he played classical pieces with a modern twist. Very educational. That was his intent.

Greg Robinson The emphysema, likely brought on by the heavy smoking, would've been considered a complication of AIDS, which is how AIDS becomes referred to as the cause of death. The virus lowers the body's defenses so terribly that every opportunistic infection (such as pneumonia) or other medical problem it would ordinarily have a better chance at fighting off can easily take hold and fester. My guess is that he would've developed the emphysema sooner or later anyway, but AIDS helped speed along the process.

I find it interesting and really sad that people are so quick to judge his sexuality and vices (smoking). I’m most unsettled by his treatment of Scott Thorson and how to this day his fans readily sweep that abuse under the rug. Being gay and smoking really aren’t big deals; abusiveness is. I enjoy Liberace’s talent and believe he was good to most people he encountered, but he really got out of control and hurt people toward the end and that wasn’t due to being gay or smoking.

He never took a drag and let the ash accumulate to about 3 inches until it finally fell off the end of his fag onto the table. 🤣

So he literally goes to the IRS to show them the clothes he wore on stage we're part of his act, and he got to use them as a tax write off. I wish I could've seen that! Also, I had no idea he smoked and I've been a fan as long as I could remember.

I saw Liberace at the Las Vegas Hilton during the late 70's. Unbelievable showman and talent.

An extraordinary but tragic man at the same time. His clear warmth and intelligence shines through. It’s very easy to underrate this man whose life seemed superficial and shallow. He most probably wasn’t .

Liberace also had to suffer the hardships of the artists. Being in Las Vegas I was a young girl my grandmother and my aunt took me to a big hotel showroom and It was empty, we were about eight people and never the less the show was extraordinary exclusively for us.
