People who are surprised haven't paid attention. There were two massive clues in the first game hinting at Thor's appearance: Magni and Modi his sons. They were both tall and barrel chested so obviously their da wasn't gonna be chiseled and thin. Men shaped like him are tough sumbitches. I did a lot of martial art and my sparring partner has the same physiology. It's like hitting a wall and he can just absorb blows, wait me out and strike once lol. Gladiators, the best ones anyway, were shaped like that too. They were fed barley to fatten them up so they can bleed, give a good show and not die. Because no it wasn't to the death all the time like in the movies, these guys were rock stars. I understand that Thor not wearing a shirt might bother some people but to me, it's a power move. Being someone who grew up with nordic mythology as part of my culture I mostly ignored the Thor part of the Marvel universe even though I loved the X-men and other things. Exactly because everything was wrong. No one had a beard, everyone looked like a body builder, thor was blonde. Loki was Thor's step brother even though in the sagas Loki is Odins blood brother and has no relation with Thor other than them going on adventures together a lot because they are the two most fun archetypes to go on adventures of the gods (warrior and trickster). Everyone had horns or wings on their helmets even though there is no archeological or written references to any of that. When I saw people getting upset with Idris Elba being cast as Heimdal back in the first of the Thor movies I was feeling like "oh so this is where you draw the line of shitting on nordic culture? When you can be a racist about it. Thanks but no thanks". Now we have a game that actually makes a depiction of Thor that looks a lot more like what I imagined growing up and people are butthurt about it? Give me a break...

@@vlad_47 No, you're right. The Gods are literally the villains in the God of war games. I don't know why people are upset that a villain doesn't fit a stereotypical heroic image. It's just really, really strange that's what some people's take is- I very much doubt most of the people complaining have played any of the games, or if they have, then I suspect that they're being professionally outraged for clicks.

It's all about the human condition mate, we don't like change ( many of us ). The cinematic Thor is an idealization, it's the Roman/Greek idealization of the body, but in today's world, the media has sort of immortalized this idealization, and it's ingrained in our minds. Sadly most of the people who are genuinely outraged are people who probably have a feeling that people who are not skinny or ripped are inferior and not good-looking, it's a sad reality that our world has catered us to. So it's always good when games like these which are so beloved start to reverse this effect.

My initial reaction to the character design was, "Whu-huh??" but your argument makes complete sense. I can totally see how a Viking-era Norse person might've looked at a build like that as an indication of prosperity and power. He was a god with an appetite who could feed it as he wished. Yeah, a tunic or a mail shirt would be nice, though. You know what other thing people of power and prosperity usually have? Shirts.

The sources talk about how his hair was beautiful not how his hair was a messy rat's nest. 2/ He's outside in a damp cold. He should have a shirt/tunic. 3/ I agree that it would be silly to give him a Mjollnir pendent. But he should be wearing jewelry to show wealth and status. 4/ Give him the iron based gloves that go with the belt. 5/ The fringes look... messy. As does the jumble of things on his arms. I think he should have a cleaner sillouette. 6/ He's a storm god. Give his clothing a sky palette; greys and blues.

People wanted a starved blonde american guy -.- Six-packs mean you are starving your body. Chris Hemsworth, Henry Cavill, Chris Evans, they aren't allowed to drink water so their chest dehydrates and shows abdominal muscles, they also aren't allowed to eat normal human food. It's not beautiful it's literally damaging your body and making you suffer. Americans want men that LOOK strong (but and not), instead of actually strong men. Avengers' fat Thor may be awful, but I still appreciate how he doesn't magically turn fit at the end of the movie. The writers wanted Thor to become fit for the final battle, but Chris Hemsworth pushed for him to stay fat. Just because you get your mojo back you don't magically fix yourself. Yes, the fat jokes were awful, but he was still one of the strongest superheroes who became fat and was dealing with depression. Maybe this opens the door for more weigh and mental health representation Idk, I really try to look at the bright side of things.

I noticed these men carrying really heavy stuff, pulling large weights, digging with shovels, etc. basically any heavy duty physical activity not involving a gym. And what I noticed was that not one single one of them looked like Chris Helmsworth. They were of different shapes and sizes and mostly lean (even if stocky) and not a big bulging muscle among them. AND HE'S NOT BLOND!!! HUZZAH!! But for real, getting a Thor who is red-headed, beefy, AND fat? Love! This! For! Him! (Because yes, a character can be fat AND strong af. Characters should also be allowed to just, y'know, be fat. Because real people are shaped like that too.) And thank you so much, Jimmy, for articulating why I can't stand the MCU's attempt at fat Thor.
