I ordered a cake once from a well known local bakery and was told it would be “boring “ because I wanted white cake with chocolate frosting. I emphasized that is what I wanted. Two days later I picked it up and took it home. I cut into it and was shocked to find it was marble cake and they added raspberry filling inside which I had not asked for. I took it back and never went back. I’m glad you honored this customer’s request. What is so hard about following directions? I appreciate your input but you gave him what he wanted.

@@sarahko1014 Well I pointed out it wasn’t what I ordered and they just said they would remake the cake. I told them the moment had passed and all I wanted was my money back. I never went back to the business and obviously it stayed with me. The business went under a few years later when the founder died and the family members tried to recreate what the business had been. BTW, the original order was not cheap. They were way overpriced for a cake IMO.

I often don't like having the strong/bright color frosting because it makes my mouth change color and tastes like sugar. However, chocolate butter cream is a win in my book, even if the words don't "pop". You listened to the customer, and did a lovely job! Looks delicious!

Fellow cake artist here. Not sure why people are hating on the chocolate iced cakes. 🤔 Our bakery get lots of requests for all choc everything, including the message and it usually looks great. Also the same for all white cakes. It's just the aesthetic they're going for and the ones we do look quite nice so it's all good.

Not true. I am a cake decorator as well. And many people come with weird gross flavor combinations and most of them have never tried that combo just thought that it would go well together, but then it just doesn't. I've had customers come a second time to order the same cake minus 1-2 of the original ingredients they wanted. Why? Well, because it wasn't good, and they knew they fu ked up when they tasted it.

It irritates me to no end, the twisting of that quote🤬!!! I worked in customer service/cashier for 22 years & people who believe the unintended meaning go all out in order to get their rights😡!!! This phrase also leads to prices! If people don't want something they might consider buying if the price is low enough. BUT if it's something they want, price tends to be no problem. My mom decorated (mainly) wedding cakes for many yrs. She got an order for a green cake. EVERYTHING was green. She had an amazing reputation for beautiful cakes and took A LOT of pride in her art. She did NOT want to make this cake, dreaded making it, worried abt it, the whole nine yards. The one good thing was the green they wanted to match was a soft pale mint green and not lime lol. When she got done with it, it was absolutely gorgeous. She quit 42 yrs ago and to this day its honestly the only cake that i can remember in detail out of the 1000's that she did.

I used to make a chocolate buttercream cake like that, but I would use 3 different shades. One for the frosting, a slightly darker shade for the roses, and a little darker for the writing. Everyone always loved it.

I used to be a graphic designer, specialising in company logos. I would listen to their design specifications, make a set of maybe 10 different logos. They'd pick their favourites and round two would be on those themes. Maybe 20-30 results for them to choose from at this point. Between forms, colorways, fonts and versions for different applications, the last round would often have well over 100 for them to choose as their final logo... I would recommend the one I thought was best and explain why. And the one I thought was worst. 75% of the time, they would choose the one I thought was worst, out of 100 or more designs. The worst. And even the rest of the time, one that I would rank amongst the bottom third. It can be a little soul destroying as a creative person, but there's no accounting for the client's taste, and you so often have to just ignore your own intuitions and trust the process, trust that your client is getting exactly what they want. You have my every sympathy in that. 😅

I'm going through this now with my first professional client. I give them around 7-10 options bc I'm still getting a feel for their wants & needs. But when I think I'm swaying them toward the best top 3, they inevitably choose the absolute bottom. And it's embarrassing that my name is on the final product, but that's what they wanted lol. I think I'm just going to give them my top 3 favorites and call it a day so this doesn't happen again 😂 It's good to hear I'm not alone.

@@bodyofhope It's just incredible how often it happens, and yes, it's frustrating because you feel like you don't want to put your name to it, and that can be important, especially when you are trying to build a portfolio. Incidentally, be sure that your client is ok with the final product going in your portfolio. Some prefer to opt out of that. Perhaps they want people to think a big design house did it. 😅 And yes, I think you have a good idea to only show them the ones you are most happy with. It's very easy to feel like you need to show them every conceivable option you thought of, in the name of value, but there's a chance you will overwhelm them with options, in addition to them choosing one you don't actually like. Perhaps not giving them that choice is the answer. Whatever the case, good luck with your project and all those to come. I hope your future clients are more in tune with your tastes. 🤗

The one thing people have to know that to be an achieved artist no matter the art (baking, painting, hair, dancing etc) we have to have an open mind and be able to achieve things even if we don’t like them. I know for me being a hairdresser for 35 yrs I have had to accomplish many unwanted projects with a slight touch of me in there lol. I actually really like it. I like it even more that you did exactly what the customer wanted, instead of over riding him. I ordered a cake from a big box store and I wanted chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. They asked me if I was sure. I said yes. They gave me a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting. No one ate the cake and I was so mad. I stopped going there and started going to a free standing bakery. Same story at the bakery. Chocolate cake, chocolate frosting. They did vanilla with chocolate frosting. Why is this such a difficult ask? No one ate the cake and I stopped going out for my cake. I make my own now. It takes a little more effort for parties but at least I get exactly what I want. And I never have leftover cake. The only downside is my family complains that they are gaining weight every time I have a party 🤷😂

I think your story is made up. One, I've worked at many bakeries where people ask for strange combos for whatever reason. We might say, are you sure? But then always make what they want. Why would we care? They asked for it. And people ask for chocolate cake with chocolate frosting all the time. Secondly, no one ate it? C'mon.
