I’ve always thought building a car for some weekend fun was probably to complicated and expensive but with the information you two provide on this channel, it seems like a reachable goal. Your obvious love for what you do is so contagious that it makes hard to keep finding excuses “not” to do it. Thanks again

thank you bruce! that's exactly what we talked about the other day making this video. it's become the idea that in order to drag race you have to spend a ton of money swapping motors and buying turbos and it's just not true. we hope to show that you can buy a regular street car and do some minor things and still go out and have fun and turn on some win lights!

@@MidwestStreetCarsAuto the awesome part about this is that’s exactly what you two are doing. Chiefs a great teacher but the other really important part, at least for me, is how much the history of the sport is so important to you both. It’s so easy to see how passionate you both are in the videos that show you talking about the history of some of the tracks that you’ve been to. It’s hard not to get excited when we see how much you guys love this. Please keep going with channel. It’s motivational and inspirational.

My dad (Rip) Thought me when I was a kid that it's not necessarily what's in the motor,but who put it in the motor,He said take two cars identical,same everything,take one and blueprint and balanced,it will smoke the other one,he also thought me unless your making enough horsepower that headers will slow you down,so my question is,at what horsepower would you want to add headers?

How long have you been running alcohol in your NA engine??
@05reddmax
@05reddmax 2 жыл бұрын
@matthew are you exaggerating when asking him how long he’s been running alcohol in his naturally aspirated engine? Because if your implying that because it’s on alcohol that it’s not naturally aspirated, that is 100% incorrect {DEFINITION OF NATURALLY ASPIRATED} A naturally aspirated engine, also known as a normally aspirated engine, and abbreviated to N/A or NA, is an internal combustion engine in which air intake depends solely on atmospheric pressure and does not have forced induction through a turbocharger or a supercharger.
@Nova-1977

Good morning Jackie and Chief. I am pretty new (probably less than 6 months) and here for what you are doing!! I really only know you from this KZbin channel, and never watched the TV show (other than the first season or two of Pinks). I LOVE the ‘automotive-archeology’ that you are doing. I’m an old street racer from the late 80s to mid 90s from the Detroit area, and just still love watching it on KZbin. One of my favorite races was against an orange Judge built by Nelson’s speedshop we did along old US 23 between Hartland and Fenton Michigan. Good times. Keep being exactly who you are 👍👊🇺🇸🤘

LS motors are for people that don’t or can’t spend big money on an old school 350 or 400 cubic inch motor. I’ll bet Chief is as schooled on an LS motor as he is the old school motor. Plus, when he shows up to race someone whether it’s one other car for money or an elimination Race. He wants the other guys to see an old school motor. With that motor the people that he will be racing will have one mind set. If he had a LS in his Corvette they would have a completely different mind set. Kind of like the Crow. People see his motor he is running an under estimate him an his Crow. Chief does his homework 📚 That’s just one of the reasons he can explain all of this trash that is going on in his motor… He talks in plain English. Speaks slowly so we can really catch on and understand everything…. When I was a kid I had one of the fastest cars 🚗 around. It had a built 327. No such thing as a 350 bock then. I ran a Muncie 4 speed and anywhere from 4:11’s to 5:38’s rear gears. My motor went to 9000 rpm very easily. Chief probably has forgotten more than I’ll ever know!!!

Chief, have you tried Glyptol painting the inside of your block surfaces? Old Smokey Yunnick trick that seals the casting surfaces, so no sand cast residue. Also, flows the oil back to the pan faster due to the smooth surface of the dried paint. Easy brush-on that works well. Glyptol is the paint used on Alternator windings.

I run .060 on my "400" you just need to start with a good block and cooling, cooling, cooling, those steam holes are there for a reason. Opinion:. Check your adaptation parts, trans interface. Unless modified the 400 is externally balanced, incorrect flexplate and damper may cause the crank to load /walk. See if those parts have something to say. No expense to inspect and check. Seldom is converter ballooning the cause, once a converter is ballooned "it stays ballooned.'
@matthewvarnam4302
@matthewvarnam4302 2 жыл бұрын
If it had the wrong balancer and or flexplate on a 400 you would know it right? The engine would start shaking when giving it throttle right? And if you had a 350 block and put a 400 crankshaft in the 350 block you would have to use the 400 balancer and flex to keep it balanced.
@otisbailey5455

The improper flex plate would rattle the motor, it would be wise to check the weight, mounting faces, bolt holes etc. Let the parts talks. Always a good idea not to overlook the adaptation dim. bolt holes, surfaces looking for unhappy parts.

As you say, having the drive, ability and intuition to take something and develop it into the best version of itself it can be. And repair it, modify it and learn something every step along the way. This is the stuff I want to know, so I can in turn pass it on to my kids. Whether they're into motorsport or not doesn't matter - the principles are still the same. Thank you both for your efforts !

Very cool breakdown and explanation. Optimization of what you have...spoken like a true tuner. I'M a "LS GUY" but I can appreciate you sticking with the SBC and droping all your SBC knowledge. Plus it is a nice change. I know so much about LS stuff that most LS build content on YT is redundant. Speaking of LS.... What's up with some LaFonda content? Some street truck racing in the future perhaps?

I'm so happy that you stick to the old small blocks . To many people think they are obsolete but I believe they are one of the best motor's ever created. Thanks for sticking to your guns & tell it like it is. I love the old school small blocks & I will run them till they put me in the grave. Love the Small block brain food. Keep up the great video's.

I’m only new to drag racing but have raced sailboats for years. You are 💯 on optimising the existing combo, we had a big folder of tuning info and summaries of every race. Change one thing, go and try it, look at the results and make the next change. We won a lot with shitty looking old gear. Favourite channel by far

Great content keep it coming! I like that your sticking with the 400 “non mystery motor now” keeping it old school with that car. Just like you said in the video EVERYONE has a turbo or pro charged ls, which they are badass. But not as badass as an old school small block vet thumping around. Car sounds damn good, and y’all will have that combo scootin fast!

I can appreciate the fact and idea that you are trying to do with the vette of a budget minded type build rather than just throwing the check book at it, because it makes it more realistic. There’s tons of other Chanel’s out there tho watch with the endless budget builds, and there are some on the shoe string budgets, none really breaking it down the way you are. Keep up the good work, and do you. Ignore all the haters, and if the don’t like it, they can just find something else to watch.

THESE LAST FEW VIDEOS I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED.....TALK, EXPLAIN, SHOW WHATS HAPPENING !!! I'm no mechanic by a looong shot, but this is very good. No theatrics, no drama, just shop talk even a person like me can understand. KEEP DOING IT THIS WAY !!

Two things I have seen as a shade tree mechanic and racer. 1) Over heating a block under stress (racing) will twist the block. One bank will shift about .006" forward/back relative to the other bank. Not exactly common, but it does happen. 2) The other is a bad line hone of the mains that is out of true. Either symptom ruins the block for anything but normal daily driver use. Good luck on getting this block to run strong without problems. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Chief, the 400 sb was externally balanced from the factory, without the proper dampener and flex plate or flywheel the crank will walk. I’m sure you knew that just thought I would put it out there. Love your stuff. Keep it up,
