Very impressive. I like the idea of black anodizing, but you might want to do the black pieces in a two-step process, where you anodize them black, then go back and cut some of the top details, so they have some bright aluminum highlights, at least for the capital pieces.

Hi Peter, As always , masterful machining, you must have had a couple of slack days, lol. But seriously, have you thought of doing a production run of the pieces? Nice work. Maybe you could make another set from brass to make two sets of distinguishable kingdoms.
@EdgePrecision Жыл бұрын
I started with that thought until I priced out the cost of the brass. Also the bronze Knight I machined (Another video) was quite a bit heavier then the aluminum Knight. So the aluminum would have to be weighted to make them feel the same. I think Brass and 303 stainless could work though. Or 303 stainless steel and steel with a black oxide finish could also.

electroless nickel might be another nice finish for the white pieces in contrast to the black anodise.. nice work in any case
@EdgePrecision Жыл бұрын
I think there is a black nickle plating. But I'm not sure how it's done. Or even if it could be applied on top of a electroless nickel plate on aluminum. What could be done is 303 stainless for white and steel with a black oxide for black. The pieces would be a little heaver, but that would be OK I think.
@Chris-ho2by Жыл бұрын
I think that the black anodise would look pretty good on the aluminium, I have never used the black nickel, the natural 'satin' finish looks really good (a sort of gunmetal grey). I think with aluminium there might have to be a pre-treatment required as otherwise the nickel might peel, but it can be done. I thought that you were going to do a bronze + silver version having seen your last video.

What about brass for the opposing side?
@EdgePrecision Жыл бұрын
There are a couple of reasons. The main one is the price of brass. I had thought to use brass for all the pieces but to spend $7-800 (McMaster price probably high. Could possibly be purchased for less) for the material kind of put a damper on that. But also, I did make a video on the Knight piece, (did you see it?) and the Brass weighs quite a bit more than the Aluminum. What could be better is 303 Stainless for white and some kind of Steel coated with black oxide. The pieces would all be the same weight then.
@agie170hss2 Жыл бұрын
@Edge Precision Peter, have you considered making the board out of aluminum squares? -- Half anodized black, and half anodized clear? Then a clever "interlock" feature so it could be "assembled" and fixed in place? Just thinking out loud.... 😀

Any chance you would be willing to drop your TNG files for those pieces? Or just the solid models for them?
@EdgePrecision Жыл бұрын
Are you referring to the Esprit TNG files? If so I'm mot sure you could use them unless you have the same machine configuration. But the solid models I use for Esprit are .stp files usually. These could be imported to any cad or cam software. All these parts could be machined on a lathe. Then moved to a mill with a 4th axis with a few alterations in the machining strategies. By surfacing some of the 5 axis cuts and angle areas. On the Rook, Knight and King this would be required. The Kings crown would not be exactly the same but it would be very close. I could send you the step files. Send me a email at peter.edge.pre@gmail.com put in the description Chess part models so I don't delete it.

For a board made of wood, maple and mahogany usually go together well. As far as metal, something heat treated and not?
@EdgePrecision Жыл бұрын
How about maple and ebony or rosewood?
@RALL123456 Жыл бұрын
@@EdgePrecision ebony is sold per gram, where i live at least.. there is no shame in veneer, if you can get your hands on it. A white maple would look great. I fear wood with a red/yellow hue would color the "white" pieces as they are so refective, as opposed to the anodized black pieces. I would advise a hard wax with plenty of UV protection (additive). Wax bc that can be conditioned later, but a epoxy lacquer might be a good option too. The ebony is one of the hardest wood out there but even that would get scratches from aluminiumoxide. The set looks great already, such a nice finish too. Will be looking out for a vid on the board :)
