Honestly when I saw this video, I was scared before clicking to watch... I was like, what did you say wrong in that video that you're apologizing for? Absolutely nothing girl! Nothing! We're gradually coming to a point where ladies step out naked not even almost naked but literally naked and it's so appalling and heart breaking. And then nobody seems to see anything wrong with it... Our little girls are growing up believing it's a trend and they're in for it. Girl, hearing you talk about it with your full chest, was such a breathe of fresh air! If other celebrities and people that have a global voice and audience can boldly preach this too with their platforms, maybe something can be salvaged. Before we wake up one morning and the trending fashion is "come as naked as from the womb" when we no dey garden of Eden. God abeg o! I love you sis.. Keep being a Jesus brand influencer

I made up my mind to stop wearing wigs or extensions because the last time I wore frontal for a wedding my sister was like "finally, you look like a human being" I was really pissed because did she actually mean I wasn't a human being with my natural hair? It was so degrading and I made up my mind, right now I don't even care what anyone thinks, I'm not wearing all that bullshit again, if you don't like me natural, then that's your problem, deal with it.

I agree with you and also stand with my full chest. I have been taking care of my natural hair for 12yrs now, now 4 inches away from waist length and people can’t believe it’s all my hair. I’m even thinking about having my hair loc’d, sisterlocs to be specific, and I tell you, people associate locs with juju, the marine kingdom etc. But that won’t stop me! My mother recently got her hair loc’d, come and see the stares she gets from people at the church as if she committed a sin by having her hair loc’d; meanwhile these women wear someone else's hair; They would never go out with their own natural hair, but would still have the nerve to comment negatively on my mother's locs. That attitude, hmmm. This is colonization all over again. Our people are destroyed for lack of knowledge! My mother looks absolutely beautiful with her locs, I thank the Most High that my mother is embracing her natural self, her natural beauty. Many of our people would rather wear those wigs than embrace their own hair!!!! Smh.

You are eloquent and confident and I love listening to you and watching your creative comedy. My hope is that millions of ladies out there will watch and be influenced by you. I love your analogy about wearing the wig that looks like your hair. My white friends do! Some white people add extensions, wear pony tail wig or full wigs. I've never seen anyone of them wear an afro wig! I sometimes wear wigs too and I love my short kinky braids the most. Let me wrap this up, cause I could go on and on😊. Thank you for your stance on modesty. Thanks for being vocal about it. I laughed when you said anyone can look scruffy whether with a wig or natural hair. So true! And yes, if you get a man with your sleek wig, you will definitely need to keep up with it. 😅 So much to say. Thanks Maraji❤

I had a similar experience with an hairdresser when I went to make my hair about a month ago. She said she had to wash and blow dry it first. I told her no, because I had previously washed my hair before coming to her. Some people think people with natural hair look unkept. God help us sha. To each his own. Most people that talk condescendingly about natural hair just dey beef. Of course look good, single, married, divorced... whoever. Look good for yourself and to be presentable. This still flows from 'how you dress is the way you're addressed'. No matter how intelligent you are, you won't get hired if you walk into a job interview looking like a maid. Ride on Maraji❤.

Maraji, you see that topic of wigs, let’s go there. I’m one of the few who feels weird and uncomfortable wearing wigs, especially those with textures that aren’t my natural hair. And this was the case even before I went natural. And you’re right, they don’t make as many nice Afro textured wigs as they do the straight and wavy ones. I hated fixing weaves, I can count how many times I’ve worn weaves or wigs all my life, not up to 10 times and I’m 46. If my hair is not in braids or cornrows with extensions, then I’m wearing my own hair, relaxed (years ago) or natural ( 6 years and counting). It’s a mental thing to do with self love and being comfortable in your own skin and people have to deal with that first before they can understand what you and I are talking about. I’m raising my daughter to love her natural hair too so she doesn’t end up confused about beauty standards.

Partly i think she said what a lot of us even feel about our hair, but don't talk about it. But again the struggle to accept and even learn to take care of our hair is still going on and i understand why people would be upset because we need to encourage each other to accept it not continue to hide from it. And if we wear wigs let it be not because we feel like we won't be accepted but just to change style, take a break, etc. And i feel you about the stylist having issues with natural hair. I'm from Congo and i have experience the same thing whenever my hair was natural the braiders always complained that it was hard for them to manage and painful to me because they comb it very bad. It was a terrible experience growing up and i still fear people doing my hair especially when it's natural

Thank you, Maraji for speaking out on this. I’ve groomed my natural hair for seven years now and I've seen shege especially from my gender including the supposed hair experts - hair stylists. I've observed that they lowkey love to wear their natural hair but let themselves to be bedridden by egocentric trends that project natural hair as nappy, unattractive, and tough. But the truth is it is not as hard as they think. You just need to figure out your unique hair needs and meet them the best and easiest way you can. I run a hair mentorship program and discovered that na just confidence and discipline be the koko. We should learn to be confident in our natural textures.

Maraji, I would love for you to do the full video on nigerian/africans and natural hair, esp re: the kind of wig preferences that are now trending. I’ve been wearing the 4B/4C Afro wig for years. And I’ve come to love it so much more than other styles. Besides the fact that it’s way easier to blend, it’s beautiful, and most resembles my texture. Interestingly, I get THE MOST compliments when I wear this kind of wig. I think that’s because it’s beautiful, but it’s also now so rare. People are not used to seeing it. Interestingly, I travel a lot and I noticed when I go to other countries in east Africa, or southern Africa, there is a lot more embracing of natural hair textures, and traditional African hair styles from women young to old. And it got me thinking “why is Nigeria not like this?” Thanks girl ❤

Finally! Someone who understands the idea of the video …It’s not really about the natural hair, sometimes people just deviate from the obvious truth to focus on what it is not.The video was basically about looking good and attractive.

And I'm wondering how you all jumped to the conclusion that natural hair is not attractive, presentable, or tidy. That is the issue people have with the video and not her saying look presentable. Why didn't she say style your hair even. If it's wig or natural, look presentable? This isn't the first time I'll gear this preaching even from old men pastors at a young age. This isn't the first time that I'll hear that don't style tour natural hair.

i totally agree with the hair texture part.... and that's because Nigerians don't even like their own hair texture in the first place...when i was a medical student, after one of our CA Exams our lecturer cautioned a student that was on Afro wig against it because it was "too big". We Nigerians are made and trained to "tame" our natural hair to be as flat as it possibly can as anything contrary is basically seen as unruly and unprofessional, its sad but its eaten deep into our roots so much that we have to pack up our hair as tightly as possible to be seen as professional

Thank you Maraji, I just got a new understanding. Even though my sister and I are on natural hair, I keep telling her to make her hair because she typically just packs it and I keep mine woven, braided... I now understand it's ok to pack it just like women in other races, we just need to keep it neat and healthy❤❤❤

Ive been on my natural hair journey since 2020, haven't had it trimmed but I make box braids and wear wigs too as protective styles. Though my hair is shoulder length now, in 2020 my hair could barely do puff puff, it's quite uneven and Im sure I have huge split ends lol. Girl if you're working 8+ hours plus going to school plus have family duties plus everyday stress, many women are all of the above, their natural hair is least of their worries. Wearing wigs is not bad, it's protective esp if you live in cold or dry harsh climates and to prevent overmanipulation of your hair. Yeah it's not ideal that some women take care of their wigs better than their natural hair but they got to cuz it's expensive 😂 I feel wearing wigs is becoming a big time beauty thing, like makeup, tattoos, heels, manicure nails, lashes, etc etc. Sometimes wearing a certain wig touches up your atire, takes your look to another level. I wear wigs sometimes but not a lot cuz I dont know how to fix it on myself esp those lace fronts. For me I feel styling my natural hair is easier than styling a wig honestly. But for some women it's the opposite. Some women just don't have the motivation or knowledge to take care of their hair, it is what it is. Thanks Maraji for this eye opener ❤

People don't understand that for some people, natural hair is not a trend. Relaxers never worked on my scalp, I would get injured, and bleed, and I was always crying. As for wigs, I can't deal with them all the time. I like air to touch my scalp. I would just do cornrows and I am okay.

14:34 in the US I see it a lot! It’s very common actually. But when I travel outside of the US I don’t see it as much. Overall I get what you’re saying but natural hair textured wigs has made a space in the wig industry. Great video. I didn’t see the clip of the lady preaching till now. I agree with your assessment.

Well said . I will just or add some people were not blessed with easy hair texture… I think life is in seasons some people’s life season and occupation can permit them to care for and flaunt their natural hair while others not. While the recolonisation argument has it’s validity I think no woman should feel guilty to do what works for her in that season. Stay blessed.

Thanks maraji❤❤ I once watched this movie of this natural hairdresser widower who met this business-class self concious lady who had been thought by her mom that her natural hair were not beautiful... i wish i can remember the title right now😢, it made me realize how we being made to believe our hair isn't in the best condition. Then we made relaxer, hot comb, and other inconveniences just to make our hair look 'perfect' and believe our own hair is not convenient😅😂. Please if you want to wear wig, wear it but don't downplay those that are rocking their natural hair❤❤.

It must be Nappily Ever After with Sanaa Lathan. It’s not just white people. Black people can be terrible to each other; both men and women regarding black features. We regard our features as an embarrassment. There are black people that will only have children with non black people to “breed out” the blackness. In fact, there’s a culture among certain Hispanic people called “mejor la raza” which means better the race. Basically people purposefully make mixed race children to breed out the black features. It’s a very sick mentality.

My mom loves watching Nigerian movies, and the wigs are her biggest problem to her. She can really see the quality of the movie in how good they wigs are. Or if everyone has the same hairstyle it's another sign that they don't care about styling the characters in interesting ways. She was surprised to see a movie with one a couple of characters with different styled, curly wigs, braids and natural hair! Watching Nigerian movies is the first time I had a hard time telling different characters apart when everyone is black lol

For me o, I don’t know about other people, using wigs is sort of taking a break from the stress of managing my natural hair and 😮 have 4c hair you know there’s a lot of stress involved in styling and maintenance. So if I’m taking a break I don’t see why I’d use a wig with the same texture cause then what’s the use might as well use my hair. Straight hairs and the rest are just easier to manage plus less manipulation for your actual hair
