"... but three months ago he went into such a deep meditative state that he registered as dead." This may sound like just a funny trowaway line, but there's a lot to be said about this. The Buddhist conception of Nirvana is very different from that of Heaven, and it's been argued - both in earnest and not - that the Buddhist notion of "inner peace" is essentially just "death" within a framework of western philosophy. Schopenhauer and Mainländer thought this was a great thing, that the notion of being "extinguished in eternal peace" isn't necessarily a bad thing is a fantastic concept, but it's also been argued - by conservative christians mostly - that Buddhists are wasting their time, "even a Buddha dies" and that they should just kill themselves if that's the type of "peace" they're after. So having a Buddhist monk meditating himself into Nirvana and registering as "dead" in a western-styled afterlife is absolutely genius. It doesn't take a side in the debate, but it turns a metaphysical discussion into a physical reality, and it's hilarious.
