Some people live in areas were almost nothing happens so they grow up with this sense that bad things only happens in big cities. They don't lock their cars because they have never had to worry about car theft or attackers so they have a hard time understanding people who do. The whole "You worry too much" is mostly because they're never have to worry about it themselves.

@@barkbark5265 Nah not really man, especially not back in the early 90's. Most rural towns in Oregon still have zero cell service, especially the coastal towns. Most people own firearms and conceal carry to make up for the lack of law enforcement... Still kinda wild west out there.

@@NightEyeStudio1995 where I grew up we never locked our doors. Now I live in Utah and I just had my locked car broken into a few weeks ago. I have heard of storied where people don't lock their car doors but they don't leave any valuables and it's better to leave the doors unlocked so thieves don't break your windows and stuff trying to get in. Btw they just jimmyed open my door so my car didn't look broken into. I really didn't notice till a little bit later that someone had even broken in till I saw a few things different in my back seat and the knife my dad gave me was gone from my glove compartment.

You know I understand there used to be a society we lived in where locking doors and such was not really necessary because people were mostly honest and looked after each other. However, today's society is not that idyllic. Truthfully, it never really was. People just believed it was. No one believed criminals were as prevalent as they really were and are. Some people still live like this due to their "Rose-colored Glasses". I wish we did have that world, but it is a dream that never existed. I was told at my first job with NASA that I didn't have to lock my car doors at work because we were on a military base and MPs and NASA Security came by three times an hour. I still locked my doors. Ironically, it was while working that job my wallet was stolen for the first and only time. Great stories with wonderful lessons for all of us. Thanks Let's Read! For choosing these stories and to their writers for sharing them through you with us. Be Safe all in these times of quarantine and illness.

I live in the country surrounded by woods and I still lock all my doors. People are crazy and you never know when someone might try to get in. I keep my car doors locked when I’m driving and even if I’m just running into the gas station to grab a drink I still lock my car doors. My parents always told me to check my backseat and to never park beside a van in parking lots because it would be easy to be pulled inside.

The story of the 13 year old girl talking to the 35 year old man was gross, no adult at that age should be talking to a child or teenager that way on the internet or in person, so disgusting. It's certainly not deterring anyone. Through if someone wanted you dead, they'd likely be able to achieve it. However if someone is checking to find their next potential victim of whatever crime they want to commit... making it easy for someone certainly isnt the wisest choice.

SuicideGehad G'59FTP yes it is??? why letting your doors unlock ON PURPOSE, it's pretty stupid and naive and almost like making it easy for people to get in, not everyone is nice and have good intentions... so yes it's pretty much asking for trouble... i don't see what's so funny about that, maybe you are mentally challenge so it's ok...you can go take your pills now!!!

@@melodiechartier5173 Through the other guy is... a bit eh. I believe the point of his post was its not the victims fault but the villan's. Again it is extremely unwise to leave your door unlocked. But on the otherhand it isnt really an invitation to murder either and depending on where you live, chances could be incredible low anyone would find out. But for the most part allowing yourself to be a soft target doesnt deter.

@Sandra Gross First of all, you can't use a 2000 year old book of fairy tales as "evidence." Secondly, you make a lot of claims here, none of which have any evidence or basis in fact. "Humans are made up of energy." What does this even mean? Do you even know what energy is? It's "energy is the quantitative property that must be transferred to an object in order to perform work on, or to heat, the object. Energy is a conserved quantity; the law of conservation of energy states that energy can be converted in form, but not created or destroyed." It's physically impossible for a person, or anything at all, to be "made of energy." Energy isn't some nebulous material things are made from.

When the main character of a story names a city, I always look it up on maps. First story must be in Coos Bay, OR

Nobody who writes these creepy stories on reddit or wherever seem to know the proper usage of the word "mortified." They must think it's like mortally terrified or something.. Google knows.

I know this comment is 4 years old but I gotta contribute. The word has two meanings from what I understand (not a native english speaker). One meaning of the word mortified is like embarrassed, ashamed and humiliated. The other meaning of the word mortified is like when an open wound id closed then you say the wound was mortified. If i’m wrong please blame the good ol’ dictionary. (Literally opened a book for this)

The girl in the 3rd story is the perfect example of why children shouldn’t be aloud to have iPhones iPads social media etc they’re so ridiculously naive and wanna be grown so bad it’s sad or at least monitor their activity online

i don't lock my doors, but it isn't always murder on the table - thieves too. i don't keep anything of value in the car, not even change. it's very difficult now to hotwire a car and i'd rather not have to pay for a window. when i start the car, the doors lock automatically.

The amount of stories on this and other similar channels that misuse the word “mortified” is ridiculous. Yikes.

@@E4T4 they use “mortified” as if it’s a synonym for “terrified” whereas it actually is a synonym for “humiliated” or “embarrassed”

Even if you think nothing ever happens in your town, still lock your car doors and house. Why even try to risk something happening? That’s like a bank not having a panic button because they don’t think most people are crazy enough to rob them.

LOL at the waiting at a bus stop story. "I'd rather be paranoid than aloof" Really? Because as far as I can tell, you had a panic attack, were late for work and got the cops involved all over nothing. And what could easily be explained away as a socially awkward mumbling lost driver trying to finish the last part of his journey when he didn't know his surroundings. So yeah... Enjoying that paranoia?
