A guy stumbles upon a cave and while inside finds an old looking lamp. He rubs it and immediately a genie comes out. The genie said, "I will grant you 3 wishes, but your ex-wife will get double." The man agrees and said, "I wish I had a mansion. " The genie then granted it, and the ex-wife got 2 mansions. The man then said, "I would like a million dollars." So the genie grants it and gives the ex-wife 2 million dollars. Then the man said, "I wish you would scare me half to death" :)

Its odd, I’ve always been very claustrophobic but caves I can tolerate for some reason. Maybe it’s something about it being 100% nature created, makes the thought of getting trapped in there much less terrifying to me than some sort of manmade contraption

The 1860's caver likely carved out his own eyes because his lantern went out and he believed any shapes in the shadows he saw were demons or something similar, attempting to drag him to hell. In his fear, he probably carved his eyes out thinking if he couldnt see them, they couldnt harm him or his chances of entering heaven. That or he saw something else even more horrific down there and honestly I dont want to deal with that option.

I was thinking about how ppl that have gotten lost in caves for long periods of time have gone partially or fully blind bc of the strain they put their eyes under trying to see in absolute darkness. And that he had some knowledge of this and was lost long enough to go blind (or at least think he’d already gone blind). Meaning that he knew that he wouldn’t be able to see the exit even if he found it. He wouldn’t perceive any light breaking that darkness. Instead he’d just continue on, scrambling desperately right past his salvation and back into the dark....and he just lost himself to the despair of it. Or he was lost for so long that in his anguish his mind turned on himself/his eyes and he was just like “it’s hopeless. what do I even need these for, they’re useless (here)”

So, for those of you who actually want to see a cave but have claustrophobia, I recommend the Carlsbad caverns in Carlsbad New Mexico. While the town isn't all that exciting, the caves are amazing, big and lit up with lights so anyone can go down. They're amazing. Oh, and don't go to White's City. It's a tourist trap and it's advertised on the way to the caves.

It’s not even factual. Brown recluses do not spin webs. They’re also not frequent in caves, though related to spiders who are, and many spiders have that violin shape. And their body is lighter than their legs. Not to mention, the bite is not painful, most people don’t notice, they can not physically bite humans unless pressed down on, like in a shoe. The necrosis is extremely rare and usually due to secondary infections. Black widows are actually more dangerous.

I remember watching a show where a man got caught in a very tight cave passage, and when the rescuers pulled on his legs he was basically gutted by the rock under him. The person of story 6 really needs their butt kicked. You see a dead body in a cave, but because you and your pals didn't want the police telling you guys to bring the body back, you don't report it, nice. Not. This dead person could have family and friends wondering where their loved one is and because of your cowardice, you guys decide to just ignore it. It just blows my mind how ignorant and cowardice people can be. If it were me who found the body or skeleton, I don't think I'd be able to live with myself if I weren't to report it.

I agree, if the guy could be identified it'd be good for his descendants to learn about him, and at the very least the body could be put to rest, plus, the history and mystery lover in me is very upset that the guys allowed so many things to be left unanswered by just not wanting to go back into the cave... Especially after all that talk about going down in history for their cave discoveries, they would get renown for uncoving some mystery! Ugh people are disappointing

So, in high school (many years ago) I got a hand me down bed from a cousin. Little did I know that there was a brown recluse nest in the bed. I woke up one day with what I thought were in-grown hairs or zits all over my legs. The were tender but nothing too alarming. I went to school and went to track practice after. I wore sprinters tights under my pants and after doing our 5th 400 of the day, my tights were REALLY rubbing my (as far as I knew) in-grown hairs on my quads. I rolled my tights up and noticed that they were now surrounded by little black rings and, upon closer inspection, I saw there was a very tiny hole that was going down into my leg at the center of each of these marks. My coach told me to go to the doctor and I did so. My doctor took one look and said “Brown Recluse bites .” As he was draining them (the nastiness that came out I can’t even describe) and giving me steroid shots, he told me that, even if I were to watch them bite me, I wouldn’t feel it. Just too small of a bite. It’s the reason I didn’t wake up in pain. So , it’s not painful like a black widow bite would be or anything. It gets really nasty as the flesh gets necrotic, though. I had 4 bites total and never felt anything other than discomfort in my legs. I’d take a brown recluse bite over a black widow any day of the week.

Noone was taking my pain seriously into my face swelled up and I passed out... hands down the worst pain I've ever felt. I got very lucky to get to a hospital pretty quickly but that story gave me flashbacks lol

Story number 3 terrified me the minute he said those spiders were brown, I instantly knew they were brown recluse and was telling him the whole time to get out of there. (I tend to talk to these stories like they can hear me lol)

We have brown recluse spiders where I live and my friend had to burn his mattress once because they built a nest in it and came out one night and bit all over his legs... 🤢 he had to go to the hospital and had nasty sores all over his legs for like a month afterwards...

I’d literally go insane with panic…. If I’m crawling on my belly, no place to turn around, and I have to crawl a pretty good way… I’d eventually want and need to stand up as soon as possible… but knowing you can’t I’d start to freak out

LOL.... Brown recluse actually aren’t nearly as dangerous as they are made out to be, you practically have to make them bite you and if they do you’ll live. Tarantula Kat has a great video on it.

When I was in 8th grade our class went on a trip to North Carolina for mountain climbing, white water rafting, and caving. Looking back, why the hell would you take 8th graders caving. It was so dangerous where you could just fall to your death in a few places, places where you needed to climb with harnesses, water up to your waste and complete darkness if the head lamps were to go out. We were told that the bottom of the ocean and deep in caves were the 2 places on earth that are completely dark where you can't even see your hand right in front of your face and if you were down there in the dark for a period of time then you would go crazy not ever knowing what time it is or anything

Something about the idea of knowing that where you are crawling someone last crawled 150 years earlyer and never made it out is just so Chilling. Just knowing that most likely those caves have remained unexplored since one unlucky soul got trapped 150+ years earlyer. The questions of why and how... The fact that no one knew where that person was. The toughts going trough their head. I mean, a person dying after getting lost is scary enough. But the question of who and why just makes it so much more chilling. It was the one story in this video that really stuck out. The rest where mostly just what you'd expect honestly. The last one was sad tho. I've been just a tiny bit into a couple caves. But i can't handle the tight spaces so i've choosen not to make the trip. Tough as i've gotten older i have to admit that i kinda want to try it again. Just to see if i can do it... Challange another one of my fears. But if i do i'll go to a well known cave that is safe with expert help just to make sure. I know a few serious cavers. Hell... Some folks i know even got married in a flooded cave. Like they had to swim down with a priest do get married... Think they even set a world reccord that day. Crazy... HAHA! Caves are not my jam! But ey, bless the people that do enjoy it. I fucking love the move The Decent tho. That movie is not scary because of the fucked up blind Golum monsters. But scary because of the tight spaces, the total darkness and the lack of control. And the mystery added with the old gear they found in that cave. The cave part of the film is why it's so good. The Monsters just adds to the tension. Kinda sad the Sequel couldn't do well because i would have loved a third part or a prequel exporing the crew that used the old gear. And alltough i don't need al the answeres as to what the monsters where... I would have loved to see and learn a bit more about what they could have been. Like i remember my original theory was that the monsters where the people who got lost down there before them or their kids or something turned into wild and blind beasts by decades or a century of isolation from humanity. Or maybe they where a sub species that branched off from Humanity before we developed our modern way of living. Before we discovered fire. The sequel had potential... But sadly it failed to deliver the feel of the first one. It was to bright and too open. + I don't like how they changed the design of the monsters from being just fucked up humanoids to demon like creatures. And the evil dude living in the wood thing at the end was just kinda dumb to be honest... The film would have been much better off just leaving it open ended honestly.

That spider cave is terrifying! Not just because a hoard of spiders in general is unnerving but the fact they were Brown Recluses! Worst part there is no known antivenom! You basically have to ride out the poison, all while on intense fluids and antibiotics to keep the affected area from infection. Next to the black widow it's one of the most venomous spiders in North America!

entomologist here, spiders dont live in large groups, they are territorial, and eat eachother, there also wouldnt BR this deep in a cave, they are hunters. youd get more cellar spiders, etc, but even then, more likely cave centipedes who would hunt spiders.

Hearing some of these again, since they just turned up in the podcast, and I’m curious about cave corpse etiquette. Given the dangers of cave body retrieval, would the park really have pushed a university caving club to go back in? Is it common to just not report bodies? What would cause someone to find abandoned equipment and not worry about the person? - is there some subset of old-timey hipster cavers that would make a burlap sack and leather journal seem unremarkable enough to assume the owner was alive and well? I get that charting “new” caves is a big part of the appeal, but their annoyed reaction to finding what seems like a clearly-dead person’s things in “their” cave felt off. Same with not reporting it to the park service.

Brown recluses don't look like black widows. They have a small body and small tail, and long spindly thin legs with a pattern on their backs that resemble a violin. Which is why they have the nickname fiddle back spiders. And they are small. But potent.
