While it's always best to educate and prepare yourself for proper tourism and emergencies, you are never 100% sure of what's going to happen. Jesus no wonder when people ask travelers “what country are you from” & they answer “America” they get eyes rolled at them. No wonder why Americans get a bad rep for traveling. A lot of us are a bunch of arrogant, self righteous, privileged snobs. Smh 🤦🏽♀️.

I went to TJ once with two girls to party. We parked and walk over the borderline.Walking back through U.S border check the two friends in front say "American citizen" and get the go ahead. I'm wasted and yell "I'm a Albuquerque citizen!" I got detained for 20 minutes. Friends ended up saving my ass.

‘Couldn’t get anesthetic... what could be worse than a broken leg?’ Hmm... any level 1 trauma? Also, had these people bothered to check the upcoming weather in Cuba? Or done ANY research on the country at all aside from ‘our parents went there decades ago’? Like, seriously? This whole thing could have been avoided... and after hearing the US/Canadian Drs said the sister would require gastric bypass, they cannot be angry that the hotel didn’t have bariatric wheelchairs available. Some people, sheesh.

How I know story #3 is fake: unless he was at like, 10% battery, the phone would have never died just because he forgot to unlock the screen. And it would have taken several hours to achieve. I've had trash cheap phones that lasted more than an hour with 15% battery, watching videos and making pretty long calls (3-5 minutes) without turning off once.

“What could be worse than a broken leg?” Seriously? 🙄 literally everything. How about being burned alive and surviving with severe burns, being stabbed, being shot, etc.

It's very revealing in these stories how safe (especially white, male) Americans feel in their own country- so safe that they just stumble into these things overseas that I- as a non-white first generation American who was spent time living in my mom's developing country, would be purposefully hightening my awareness to try to avoid. This comment isn't made to shame anyone, it's good to feel safe in your home country as long as you know that those safeties don't necessarily apply outside of it. I just wish that every American had the ability to go about like in such a carefree manner on their own US soil.
