Actually, as far as I know, the main difference in "ш" and "щ" is the position of your tongue. In "ш" the tip of your tongue is pointed at the area where your upper teeth meet the gum and in "щ" the tip of the tongue is pointing slightly downward in direction of the lower teeth. The later also automatically makes the middle part of your tongue raise a bit towards the palatal area in your mouth. This applies to all "soft" sounds, hence in linguistics, they are called palatal sounds.

Yeah I read this in Denis Fedorov;s video too. It's so hard to get used to, I always worry I am pronouncing it wrong and I keep needing to pay attention to my tongue location

As for the SH sounds, the hard SH sounds bad / funny, so one should only pronounce it like a normal soft SH - languages should be easy to pronounce / speak and easy to understand etc, and all the weird sounds that either sound bad or funny or are too hard to pronounce should be changed! Same as the SH sound in Swedish, which is similar to the hard SH in Russian, and the hard G and hard R sounds in Dutch, and the TH sound in English etc! So everyone should pronounce the words as softly as possible and not make any odd or unpleasant sounds and always speak clearly and pronounce every syllable and never roll the Rs etc! The SH sounds should be pronounced like a normal soft SH, the R should be pronounced in a soft way, the G in Dutch should be pronounced like a normal G close to an H (without the funny noise that sounds like clearing one’s throat) or like an H, and the English TH should be pronounced like T close to a D or like a D etc! While languages like French should be spoken without the nasal sound and in a clear way! So a lot of things should change to make languages sound better and to make them easier to pronounce and fun etc!

Pronunciation is always a choice tho - so one technically doesn’t have to pronounce words the same way most do, just because it’s considered the norm! All hard sounds in general are very unpleasant to the ear and funny-sounding and it’s how oude people would usually talk - luckily younger people seem to have softer accents in general, so I guess the hard accent trend is going to change soon! The more modern the world becomes, the softer the accents start becoming - so I’m sure in the near future a soft accent will become the norm! Esp considering that letters and sounds such as R and SH and CH etc sounds need to be as soft as possible in pronunciation, otherwise they can make a word sound really bad! So I always pronounce such letters and letter combinations using an ultra soft accent, so that they sound pretty and very refined and pleasant to the ear, and I’ve never rolled my Rs or anything like that!

Now I know that Ц is like the German Z, and this is the first that actually explained the difference between Ш and Щ. Not as subtle of a difference as I thought. Also didn't know that Й sounded different at the end as opposed to at the beginning of a word. Thanks for this video!

English speakers use the Щ sound when ever they say freSH Cheese. The letter Й in Russian words may also be considered a semi-vowel as it used in conjunction with other vowels to form a diphthong, a structure also common in English. Й takes a different characteristic when it's adapted into words of foreign origin such as yogurt or New York.

Let's say it like this, when I compare the Russian alphabet to other Slavic varieties of the Latin alphabet: й - j ы - y ц - c ч - č я - ja е - je ё - jo ю - ju ш - š ж - ž ь - a small "j". For example if those я е ё ю didn't exist, the word тебя was тьэбьа. I think it would be much tidier and realistic to compare it to this.

Answer: Because ёгурт is a slang name for Egypt, for instance: - Куда поедешь отдыхать? - В Ёгурт. So, yoghurt is йогурт, in order not to mess it up with Egypt. 🤣🤣🤣

The trick I use to differentiate between Ш and Щ is that with Ш, I push the tip my tongue up to the roof of my mouth.

Interesting. My Russian teacher in high school (1992-1995) called it “ee kratkoye” and said it was a vowel modifier, so I always assumed it could only be used after a vowel. Now I see you calling it “ye”, and it makes more sense, because it is like an English “Y”. Which also is a vowel modifier, but can be used as a true “ye” sound. “Йогурт” is the first example of me seeing that in Russian. So now I have a better understanding about that letter. Thanks.

This is only the case in loanwords. So Йо is the English Yo. But if it would be a Russian word I think it would be spelled with Ё, cuz it is literally the same as Yo.

It's literally never used at the beginning of a word except in loanwords. The best way to describe it is as a way to create diphthongs and indicate grammatical endings.

In German: И = i Й = j Ц = z. When it comes to SH sounds German has strong and soft ones too but SCH is strong and CH is soft. Not sure how similar they are to the Russian sounds. They seem different somehow.

Excellent coverage of these sounds!! Especially tips on how to pronounce the ш and щ. Отлично. Daria (Real Russian Club) says to pronounce "ы", you start by saying "oo" and then smile while making sound "oo". This helps me too.

The exact pronunciation of Й й still confuses me because I've seen it called "short ee", ee, or yee and it always sounds kinda different wherever I hear it. I think this is mostly because it's a new sound to me and I'll need more exposure to learn its subtle ways, but your video still help me put it apart from all the other ees. Thanks!

I find pretty interesting the fact that in russian й and и are a consonant and a vowel, and in romanian, we mark both sounds with the same letter, i. We also mark with i the final ь like in соль. This makes russian easier to read but a lot harder to spell

I am Bengali 🇧🇩, and Bengali Language has same sounds like Ш and Щ too. Ш [ʂ] is harder than English "Sh" [ʃ]. And that Ш [ʂ] sound has in Bengali letter "ষ" too, which is hard. And another is Щ [ɕ] which is softer than English "Sh" [ʃ]. And that Щ [ɕ] sound has in bengali letter "স" too, though "স" is used for [s] sound. What makes me angry is that when at age 11 I first started learning Russian from a late 1940s Berlitz teaching book, "Ш" was shown pronounced as "sh" like in "shoe," while "щ" was shown as being pronounced "shch" as in "rash choice." But not only are they wrong, but they're backwards. "щ" is "sh" as in "shoe." "Ш" does NOT have ANY equivalent in English. And what kills me is that when I took Russian courses at the Dept of Agriculture in 1984, we used a textbook, Essentials of Russian, that was first published in 1948 and used the exact same pronunciation guide--also WRONG--as the Berlitz textbook. So ALL these decades I've been using these two letters incorrectly!!! 😠 A lot of websites also show them wrong.

I think your comaration свой vs свои was good but the sound changes so much because of the stress, right? If in the word свой the stress falls on свОй, in свои falls on своИ. So you should give as an example where both и and й are either stressed or not.

Й cannot be stressed, because it is a consonant. If и is the last letter of the word and unstressed, the difference between и and й is barely distinguishable, if any. For example: конвой vs. конвои. In the second word the sound is a bit longer, but if you speak quickly, it is very hard to hear any difference, so it mostly depends on the context (because the the first one is in singular and the last one is in plural, there should be no confusion here because of different declensions of surrounding words).

Е and Ё also look similar, but they make completely different sounds, except “берёт” and “черёд” can alternatively be spelled “берет” and “черед”, respectively. (These words are some the exceptions to the pronunciation rules; “берет” also has another meaning, in which it's pronounced normally.) Many words have the same meaning with these letters, but “елка” means any NY tree (I have no idea why; the word looks like something related to eating), and “ёлка” means a NY celebration

Many beginner courses state that Й is like the "y" in English "boy". I'm a native English speaker and I don't know how to isolate the "y" without saying the "o" which proceeds it. In the top 500 most common Russian words, Й always has a vowel before it. Maybe you are not even meant to pronounce Й in isolation? The "boy" example just seems confusing to me.
