I think for one moment when Sozin was acting on pure instinct, he still saw Roku as a friend and knew the potential threat that a volcano posed to the capital. It was that moment that he decided to help Roku. Seeing Roku weak and overwhelmed caused Sozin to stop and think, realizing that if he was committed to his plan to take over the world, Roku and the Avatar in general would always get in his way. Sozin probably saw Roku as nothing more than the first obstacle to be removed on the way to proving the Fire Nation’s dominance.

Sozen's betrayal is even more tragic than you think. The saddest part was that Sozen actually went to the volcano initially to help his friend in a genuine way. He really did want to help. When he said, "Need help old friend?", he really meant that. He said that the volcano was an unexpected tragedy, so it definitely was not planned. The whole time they're fighting volcano they really are fighting as friends. But it wasn't until Roku was suffering on the ground dying that Sozen suddenly realized that his death would mean the birth of his plans. And his greedy vision overwhelmed his honest love for his best friend. It took that one moment of decision for Sozen to abandon their brotherhood for glory and prosperity.

Ok. I am going to put the "why Roku fought a volcano" question to a rest once and for all. There is something called pyroclastic flow - it travels faster than lava, and over water, and kills basically on contact. Roku was not trying to fight the volcano to prevent the town from getting destroyed. He was protecting the people who were escaping by boat out of the bay. So they did not get killed by the pyroclastic flow.

There are so many reasons the Roku reveal works so well. One of them is this: Zuko's status as a deuteragonist and the fact that his uncle explicitly tells him he needs to "restore balance to the world" (arc words for Aang) work really well to subvert the Chosen One trope. Yes, it's Aang's job to save the world because he's the one with the special Avatar spirit inside him... but Zuko has nothing special about him other than the fact that, because of the circumstances of his birth (that apply equally well to Azula), fighting for peace means a lot coming from him.

Oh, and that "gift" Sozin gave Roku?? It marked Roku permanently as a member of the Fire Nation, even as he traveled the world and otherwise donned the clothing of the nation where he was studying. For the point of saving the island I think it's because maybe the catastrophy could have affected islands next to this one, with the toxic cloucs, the cinder, etc. So Sozin was protecting his territory. But also I think it was an occasion to come check out on Roku and make sure he dies

Something most people also don't realize (spoilers, but since y'all already finished even Korra) is that while Zuko has the struggle between the both sides inside of him, so does Azula. It's part of why she goes crazy in the end. She always chose the Evil Dragon though, and ruled through fear. So when Mai and Ty-Lee betray her, suddenly the Good Dragon probably started talking to her again; hence why she sees her Mom saying how she did actually love her.

I'm pretty sure Roku stayed to fight the volcano is that massive eruptions like that have been known to launch debris miles away, not even including the ash clouds.

I just finished binging on the earlier episodes and this came on just in time. I have no idea how many times I’ve watched this show but it never gets old. Especially, being able to watch others react for the first time. This kind of stuff really makes me happy. Thank you. I need this due to my depression and disease ridden body.

Me looking at the next episode: oh it’s “The Runaway.” Filler episode, not my favorite, but it’s Toph-centric so I know Montana will love it Me looking at the episode after *that*: “PUPPETMASTER!” MONTANA IS GONNA FLIP

There was actually a hint about Zuko's lineage, but it's only clear in hindsight. During the Guru episode, Zuko was both the Firelord and the Avatar in his dreams.

Believe it or not Sozin genuinely wanted to help Roku at first (and possibly mend their friendship) but when he saw Roku dying he realized he could finally achieve his plans

I've been watching alot of Avatar reaction videos, and every time it comes to the Avatar and the Firelord episode, people constantly ask the same thing. Including here. It's the end when Sozin betrays Roku, they ask "Why did you even bother showing up?" And I can come up with one reason...Sozin wanted to make amends with Roku. He went there cause he wanted to help Roku with the volcano, and rekindle his friendship with Roku. He was going to let go of his plans of spreading his ideology to the rest of the world so he can have his best friend back. But when the moment came when Roku inhaled the toxic gas and was at his weakest , Sozin's Crossroads of Destiny came upon him like Zuko. And like Zuko, he chose to go down the Dark path and chose the world over Roku. But if that moment never came, I personally feel Roku and Sozin's friendship was going to be restored.

I think that Sozin came to Rokus island cuz he rly cared about him. And he wanted to help his friend. But then... When Roku was defeated and begging for help... Sozin saw again all the possibilitis that Rokus death would make. When he was leaving him to die, we can see he is sad. But he did it, cuz he thought his vision is more importaint than his best friend...

I have watched this show more times than I can count, and this is the first time I realized that the red and blue dragons from Zuko's dream after saving Appa are Sozin and Roku's dragons. They teased this twist all the way back in book 2. *Mind Blown*

I love the scene with Iroh and Zuko. Every time Zuko is on screen he is shown behind the bars to illustrate he is the one in a prizon of his own making. And iroh was always seen clearly with nothing infront of him

Sozin came to help because it was his best friend's home island. He left Roku there because he realized this way, he didn't have to kill his best friend, he just needed to leave.

You can tell in the 12 years apart that Sozin became so proud of how amazing his nation and his culture was, that he felt it was the Fire Nation's place to spread those things to the other nations, regardless of what they want. If Sozin distributed wealth or helped to educate the disadvantaged, he'd have been called a compassionate hero of the people and not a selfish aristocrat. But he did the exact opposite and started a pointless war that guaranteed the world would hate his country.

The island also had Fire Nation citizens on it and Sozin does care about the well being of his own subjects.

I think the reason why Sozin came to the island is because first he really was going to save Roku. But then the chance to get rid of Roku was too tempting and he took that chance.
