This is a KZbin premiere of 'Children Say' a song by Level 42 to celebrate Mark King's 63rd birthday, today, Ocober 20, 2021! Also Level 42 have announced a tour of the Netherlands in November 2021. They will play a.o. De Melkweg Amsterdam and Tivoli Utrecht
Level 42 are an English jazz-funk band formed on the Isle of Wight in 1979. They had a number of UK and worldwide hits during the 1980s and 1990s.
Their highest-charting single in the UK was "Lessons in Love", which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart, and number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, upon its release in 1986. An earlier single, "Something About You", was their most successful chart-wise in the United States, reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
"Children Say" is a 1987 song by Level 42. Written by Mark King, Mike Lindup and Phil Gould, it was the final single to be issued from their album, 'Running in the Family'. The song followed a series of successes with the hits "Lessons in Love", "Running in the Family", "To Be With You Again" and "It's Over".
'Children Say' reached no. 8 in the Dutch Top 40 and no. 22 in the UK charts.
In this video Level 42's line up had changed dramatically as shortly before this shoot was done Phil and Boon Gould had left the groep. They were replaced by guitarist Paul Gendler who was previously in Modern Romance and also was a session guy. Drummer is Neil Conti of Prefab Sprout and the sax player is Krys Mach. Thanks to Chris Johnson of Polydor who gave us this update.
This video was never broadcast by TopPop and was found only recently in the AVROTROS archive!

Oh wait, I saw them live in Utrecht Netherlands 🇳🇱 back in 1984, my stepdad a musician and mom, actually my whole family is. my dad took me to their concert, first support acts were ' goede doel ' very famous band in the Netherlands and Belgium. We were with, dad, my uncle which plays bass slapping as good as Mark ,no joke. He learned it from him. And a friend from my parents, I was 12. I never forgot how good it was! Live is amazing! Voices and the whole band! 💚💙❤

Always loved the craftmanship and grooves of these guys. I am not a Level 42 fan, but i bought a best of cd back in the day. It still holds up, the songs, the musicianship, the production. It is very enjoyable to listen to. I mean you just got to sing a long, the beats, rhythm parts, harmonies are wonderful. Rich popmusic. i am a metal and rock guy but i feel lucky growing up with these songs of Level 42 too. Excellent.

Just curious. Which CD of theirs did you buy? Was it 'Level Best' (1989) or 'The Very Best Of' (1998)? They've also had several other greatest hits compilations out through the years since then.

Level 42 were such an understated band, it was uncool to be into them back in the day in the UK..but they were so good !

I was absolutely SHOCKED to find out hey were an “arena band” and considered very low class in the UK. In the US they were virtually unknown so we got to be the cool people listening to unknown UK bands like Level 42. Hahah. It just goes to show that you should concentrate on the content rather than who likes them or not. Still my favorite band.

Understated maybe but the Britfunk gendre they started in was always in the shadows compared to 2 Tone, New Wave and New Romantics around the same time, but Level 42 were never seen as 'uncool', just maybe not mainstream pop. When they made the change it brought about the end of the original (best imho) lineup but they still had consdierable success in the late 80s. Properly crafted songs played by musicians each on top of their respective game. Always well produced and very few throwaway tracks even in the depths of their LPs...in fact there were many 'singles' that never made the light of day but should have been released 'Good man in a storm' being right up there.

I keep to myself what I might share with others But they don't seem to understand I open my mouth to rediscover That I don't have the words at my command Holdin' out for a world so much better But I'm a stranger in a stranger's land All my friends have sold out, couldn't handle the pressure Countin' their blessings, tryin' to salvage what they can Children say, children say "We open our minds as one" But one more day slips away Why don't the dreams of the young never come to be? When I overhear my parents' conversations Well, I'm struck by the things they say It seems they traded the years for mere complications Who ever thought it could end this way They close the door but they can't lock it 'Cause somethin' of their childhood remains And they've felt it before, when the man in their pocket Counted the cost of their material gains Children say, "Come what may Be strong for the friends you've known" But one fine day, far away Can we remember the love we used to own? Children say, children say "We open our minds as one" As one more day slips away Why don't the dreams of the young never come to be? Everybody hear them say Well, you knew what I was sayin' But did you know what it meant? When you saw that look in my eye Did you know it was heaven sent? Was it all a wakin' dream? All that time we must have spent Well, I guess it must have been Somehow that feelin' came and went Children say, "Come what may Be strong for the friends you've known" But one fine day, far away We remember the love we used to own Children say, children say "We open our minds as one" As one more day slips away Why don't the dreams of the young never come to be? And all children say Children say, children say And all children say Children say, children say Hear just them say Children say, children say All children say Children say, children say

Sadly, Phil and Boon had both left the band just before this single was due to be promoted. Therefore, Mark and Mike had to film the official promo video for it in Paris, France by themselves and that's also why you see temporary replacements Paul Gendler on guitar and 'Prefab Sprout' drummer Neil Conti filling in for them in this clip.

No, that's incorrect. Phil and Boon fully took part in the filming of each of the videos (as well as doing extensive promotional duties) for the first four single releases 'Lessons In Love', 'Running In The Family', 'To Be With You Again' and 'It's Over', but both of them left shortly afterwards. So Mark and Mike had no choice but to film the promo for the band's next single 'Children Say' in Paris, France by themselves.

Great song but this performance is quite cheesy, as Mark isn’t taking his bass playing seriously, there wasn’t any need for a saxophonist to be present when this song contains no saxophone whatsoever and the intro is played on a synthesizer and not on an electric guitar. Other than that, I’ll always love Level 42 and this song is one of my favourites by them!! ✌️😙
