A beginner's guide - how to level up in D&D 5E. In this video I take my 1st level dwarf fighter all the way up to level 3 . . . because I feel like it! Like, comment, subscribe and share, especially with friends who are new to D&D. :)

Thank you! D&D is pretty complicated but the more I learn and try to play, the more I understand. This helped a lot! Thanks again!

What I love about your videos is that you show the character sheet, going through the book and leading through the process using a character as an example. Actually filling it in on screen. This gives me the confidence that we're doing it correctly 😊 I'm DMing for my husband and kids, just made it through Cragmaw hideout!

You forgot to add one thing. if your constitution ups one level you get to add to the lesser levels also. That is the most tricky part to remember. But nicely explained. thanks

I know I’m behind on this (4 years behind) but wouldn’t you just add 1 hp for every level you character is?

Yeah it's very helpful. I usually have lots of them on my character sheets and then bookmark pages in rule books too. Got the idea from Armchair Warlords in their Pathfinder character videos.

+1 for using "Pink and Brown" for your intro music! Awesome song! But yeah, great vid. A friend of mine invited me to join a game he's running, but said I'd need to level up to 10 in order to be at the same level as everyone else. I'm making a human fighter/Eldritch Knight, so this is perfect!

Oldie but a goodie Nate. When spellcasters level up, do you just let them pick one from the PHB? Seems they should have to acquire them in play thru a mentor, recovered spellbook, etc. Help? Thx

I've been having some confusion amongst my players involving how many hit points you gain per level. In the book it says under the class sections that you roll a 1d10 per fighter level for example. 1 of my players thinks that no matter what level you are you only roll 1 hit point dice and add it to your total hit points. I think that it's 1 hit point dice PER level of the class. So if you're a 4th level fighter jumping to 5th level you would end up rolling 5d10 for your new hp.(+ con bonus) Multiclassing just involves rolling the appropriate hp dice to the level. I'm still kinda confused and i think at the beginning you did actually roll 2 dice and added it to your 1st level base stat hp of 14, making you a level 3 character like you stated. Any input would be helpful! Thanks
@scaredragon1239
@scaredragon1239 7 жыл бұрын
i beleve it is just one die per level but being the dm you have the power to homebrew it the other way if you wanted too.
@scaredragon1239
@scaredragon1239 7 жыл бұрын
you also have the option of taking an average which i think is half you hit dice+1
@BigDad138
@BigDad138 7 жыл бұрын
Oh ya i know, it was just a confusing with the wording of the book but the way i'm going with it is, if you are 9th level and you just gained 10th basically you're rolling 10 dice for HP's. (based on classes) I had a slight disagreement with a player but we've since come to the same conclusion. Thanks for the input tho, i appreciate it!

Do you have to roll because in the PHB it's says for example 1d10+con but then it something like plus 8 so can you just add 8?
@WASD20
@WASD20 8 жыл бұрын
Not sure where you got the 8, but maybe that's if your CON is +2? You can either roll 1d10 or you can take a 6 when you level up. Then you add your CON as well.

Suppose a character is a Hill Dwarf Sorcerer (Draconic). Hill dwarf gets 1 hit point when he levels up and Draconic bloodline gives 1 hit point per level. Does this stack? Does that mean I would roll the hit die when I level up, and get 2 additional hit points? Thank you very much
@sigjay
@sigjay 8 жыл бұрын

I am a little confused about monster combat works. Example: With a Hill Giant it says Greatclub. Melee weapon Attack: +8 to hit, (does that mean with the D20 to get pass the PCs armour class) Hit: 18 (3d8+5) bludgeoning damage (is the 18 added to the hit? then you roll the die and add the +5)
@WASD20
@WASD20 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, +8 added to the D20 attack roll. If that number beats the pc armor class, then you can make your damage roll of 3d8+5.
@thegreattypical3962
@thegreattypical3962 8 жыл бұрын
Ok, Awesome! What about the 18 after Hit?
@WASD20
@WASD20 8 жыл бұрын
So the 18 is if for you to use if you don't want to roll the 3d8 for damage. Some DMs may just use that average to keep combat moving more quickly.

Are these abilit scores legal or are they game breaking? I'm kinda new to DMing (Pathfinder at that). Starting 5e now and I'm trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks for the upload.
@WASD20
@WASD20 9 жыл бұрын
Nothing is game breaking when the DM can throw a dragon at a first level party. :) I certainly did roll high for these, and if I was really using this character I might even re-roll because I'd be worried about being WAY better than the rest of the party. If you want to ensure a fairly even level across party, the standard array in 5E is not a bad way to go. So anyway, no not game breaking but it is sometimes nice to have party with fairly similar ability scores, especially if you have players who will feel bad about not 'doing as well'.

+WASD20 +bodywhey8 Kinda new to 5e, but I like to roll for my stats, then if they are pretty high, I will intentionally make one stat really low. Makes for fun Role Playing opportunities if you are strong and smart, but have the charisma of a mushroom

Hi Nate! I'm a big fan and I have 1 question. I hope you find the time to reply. I was just wondering how you got the 14 when you got a 10 rolling your hit die. And can you walk me through how you do it with the hit die? Thanks!

Hey there. I got the +4 from my constitution modifier. You roll your hit die and add the Constitution modifier to get your additional hit points when you level up.

Have you ever decided NOT to use spell casting abilities upon leveling up? I'm making a ranger but don't want to use spells. How do you maintain balance throughout a campaign without these abilities? Are there rules for this like increasing bonuses or proficiencies instead?
@WASD20
@WASD20 6 жыл бұрын
It's possible, but that's something you'd have to work out with your DM. Or just pick a class that doesn't have spells and you can still pretend it's a ranger. Just flavor your character that way for the sake of the story. Also, you might look into Adventures in Middle Earth, which has classes with no magic. It still uses the 5th edition rules for the most part. My review here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHvCaXarecqYkKc

Oh, duh, I didn't even think of that. Just like creating a new monster but using an existing monster's stats for simplicity's sake. That'd probably be easier for the DM as well. Thanks for the recommendations and love your videos!

Wait, so just to be clear: When I gain a level I just roll my 1d10 + Constitution mod only once, right? I’m not rolling 5d10 because I hit level 6, right. Just want to double check if anyone can confirm either the former or latter :)
@dsoul1305
@dsoul1305 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you just roll one dice each time you level up and add the modifiers and add the result to the previous value of hit point.
