Leveling up my home printing - HALBE Magnetic Picture Frames, Canon PRO-10S and Cotton paper rag

HALBE reached out and asked if I wanted to test their high end, custom made, magnetic frames. And boy Im I glad I did. I was quite happy with my old consumer printer and later my pigment printer. The photo papers I had was decent as well. But I hated my frames.
They are made in Germany but seem to have retailers outside of Europe as well.
The frames are individually made based on the customers needs. You just choose dimensions, frame width and material, glass type, passpartou and then they make it for you.
Ive actually had the PRO printer for 4 years already. So its tried and tested.
The papers have been my goats for at least 3 years.

A note on something that maybe wasn't crystal clear about the frames: They are custom made and individually manufactured based on the customers needs. You choose dimensions, frame width, material, glass type, passpartou and then they make it for you. If it sounds overwhelming they have loads of suggested combos to choose from.

It's a creative process to edit photos for different kinds of paper. protip is to print multiple proofs on to one sheet of paper so you can see how the print turns out. Then make your corrections and then reprint to size. Picking up sample boxes with multiple types of paper is a great way to explore.

Yup, Done all that and Im so happy to have found two standards and not needing to do it no more :) I get some find it fun, but it is not my favorite part of the process.

I have a pro 10 s. It's fantastic, and affordable used - just don't forget to budget ink and paper! I love it, I only use it occasionally and haven't experienced any blockages.

Yes print, it's an art unto itself, always was and still is. I'm only using a cheap printer with few profiles available and a few papers I experimented with to find which works best and yes, cheap frames too but it's still very satisfying to print, frame and hang a picture.

I use and love a Pro-10s also - here is a hot tip....the pigment ink in these cartridges is identical to the stuff in the PGI29's of the Pro-1 printer. This has 2 implications: 1. its cheaper to buy the larger carts, and use the ink inside them to refill your Pro-10s carts 2. you can scan the local classifieds for people selling their Pro-1 printers, which no one wants to buy, and ask them to buy their old ink from them. Many will have full sets of unused ink, and/or half full carts that will still contain like 2 refills for your smaller Pro-10s carts. Ive skipped much of the 'how-to' details here of course, but that is readily available online. By using the second method, Ive sourced a lifetime supply of ink (and paper) for a tiny fraction of its brand-new cost.

Thank you, Mattias. I was looking for quality frames... My favourite paper is Tecco Duo Fine Art Rag, but just discovered that Tecco is closing down and that was bought by Ilford. I will have to try that Ilford paper...

That's my next priority. Even getting to grabs with editing, I've quickly realised that 1: my fast HD laptop is not good enough to review my "keepers". 2: a big colour accurate simple HD screen should do. 3: Think it'll be worth getting printed what I consider to be the few good ones to hang in the wall assess. There is only so much that I'll understand from looking at the screen and histogram.

You can always use your phone to check colors. An average iPhone is 98% accurate. It’s a classic when asking clients to approve ads and what not. You never know about their screen, but the phone is most likely pretty accurate.

@@mattiasburling Thanks, but I just figuring out what to look for as far as learner mistakes when reviewing my photos and well, it's a lot of fun: the JPEG on my phone but what I end up with in the simple 24" screen in RAW give a totally different appreciation. That's why I want to print, to see if what I think looks good, actually looks good on print. The guy in the photo print shop is going to laugh his head off! Lots oh no what did I do here!

I have canon pixma pro 10, the printer is great… but the ink is very expensive…. Do you have any solution?

Not really. I only use it for larger prints that goes on the wall or to give away. And then the ink lasts me quite some time. When we do small 10x15 types of prints we use a lab and get them by the hundreds. Also I keep an eye out for when its on sale. Also a fellow here in the comment section suggested looking for people selling their used Pro-1 or Pro-10, and then asking them to buy their just the ink :)
