Back in the skateboard glory days everyone was a lil messed up. Tony got most famous for landing the 900. But there was an Australian skater who was landing it first. However when he went thru the airport there was so much cocaine still on his ID that he was deported back to Australia and they are very strict down there and got like 30yr sentence or something crack. Wonder how he’s doing now…

There is multiple spots in this level. The Gonz rail in this level. Jamie Thomas Leap of faith. The infamous Carlsbad gap. Which is so historically accurate is not even funny. Down to the dirt around the gap. Swear to god I sound like an autistic kid but it’s that close to scale. School 2 is just a bunch of school like street spots smushed in a level. That secret area in school 2 that is the stairset and grass gap is just meant to be a hidden easter egg for real life skateboarders, as it is meant to be a replica of the famous "Carlsbad Gap" of Carlsbad High School. The last hidden area shown is also meant to be the "Animal Chin" ramp. A ramp that is from one of Tony Hawk's popular video parts from a Powell Peralta video in the 80s.

pretzel, i have important information about School II! several of the spots you pointed out are 1:1 based on real world skate spots at california high schools! the big parking lot area with the long rail along the wall is a spot called “the Gonz rail” and the rail itself is wedged in a corner in real life, so they had to design for it in the game. and the spot with the little overhang (where you talk about the theoretical fan-edit of the level in the video) is a spot called “the Leap of Faith”, and there exists a video called “Welcome to Hell” where Jamie Thomas (a pro in this very game!) attempts a melon grab down the gap! EDIT: OMG! the secret secluded VGWT Spot is the legendary Carlsbad gap! also: Skatestreet Ventura was a real skatepark in Ventura, CA and was a short jaunt away from Neversoft headquarters at the time, so the developers actually skated there!

I appreciate these videos. They offer a look at games that won't be possible for some in the future. Having put a lot of time into the TH series, I feel the games that don't have environmental NPCs have this unique anomaly vibe to them. Like the backrooms, or some kind of limbo state. The 1+2 remake are a perfect example of what I'm describing. AFAIK, there is only one other living person in the single player, the golf cart guy. It's almost post apocalyptical and we're just choosing to shred instead of rebuilding.

Agree and love how bits like 2:20 are considered in the gameplay. I have to think the addition of the manual led to a lot of design changes like making lines shorter from THPS1, so as not to allow combos to be performed easily, and led to a lot of these purposefully empty spaces you have to skillfully navigate through and connect to other parts of the level. I mean, the golf cart 100% is there to knock you down while you're trying to balance a manual. It's a neat little touch that's genuinely a good game hazard.

it's interesting seeing you talk about spots that are famous skate spots, like the carlsbad gap, and hearing you speak about the space as it is without the recognition of it as a skate spot. It comes across as a play space and wondering abut interruptions to the game mechanics' flow so it becomes confusing and eerie how some of the spaces seem empty or like dead ends. great video, it has me thinking a lot about level design in a way i enjoy

I never played tony hawk, but i felt the same way about NFS most wanted. Especially coming from underground 1 and 2, which had spectators cheering you on at the start and end of every race. I think that added so much to the atmosphere. It felt like a weird step backwards and though it's one of my favorite games from my childhood, MW always had this sense of unease and loneliness about it. Liminal, i believe the kids call it. The world is clearly being inhabited, yet the inhabitants are nowhere to be seen outside of a few cutscenes.
@SEB1991SEB2 ай бұрын
The interpretation I had when I was younger was that the skaters aren't meant to be skating in these areas, so that's why they never come across anyone, cos they're trying to avoid getting caught by anyone. And then in competition stages there obviously wouldn't be anyone walking around cos they'd distract the competitors.

Are you planning on covering _Tony Hawk Underground,_ as well? I played that one a lot as a kid, and comparing the stages there with the ones I've seen from the _Pro Skater_ games, it's interesting to see how they went from "Here's a skate park that kind of resembles a real place, but is obviously made for the player" to "ah, dang, now we need to make something that looks like an actual city block, but it still needs to be fun to skate in it". Which, in my opinion, they nailed.

Have you ever played the first SSX game? It has a ton of interesting out of bounds and shortcut areas, the city level especially. My favourite was the Snowdream level, which had this dark peaceful forest alongside the entire track. It was always nice to immediately head off-course and just plow through the powder among the trees and enjoy the relative calm, away from all the noise and light of the main course.

another neat fact about SSX is in-universe all the tracks have been redesigned for the following year's event in SSX Tricky, and if you remember the original designs some parts have been left in as a little nod (main example being the OOB shortcut towards the end of Aloha Ice Jam, as well as Mesablanca's split sections). in general an SSX video would rule

starting with THPS3 and moving back to THPS2 much later, I can confirm that feeling of sort of weird, semi-complete, truncated emptiness is serious in the first two games also cuz i doubt anyone else will mention this, the GBA port of THPS2 (which I played before the original, weirdly) seems to agree with what you say about some of the emptiness because there's an entire line that runs above the area from the starting area all the way past the gym to the corner of the level and it was jarring at first to play the original version of the level without that line there
