I really like it when an entire game takes place in a particular building and they put a staggering amount of detail to place that would normally be a simple backdrop in another game. Like, there are thousands of video game malls out there, but this one gets to be extremely fleshed out and detailed because it is the *_entire_* game

I always thought the mall was so big as a way to bring people into an otherwise small and unremarkable town. Something along the lines that the town had a bunch of land and the city government gave it away to a developer for free if they built something that would attract visitors… I know they’ve done that with amusement parks in smaller cities

I honestly just thought that it was a boom town and when they finished mining whatever they were mining the mall was all that was left. Everyone worked there and it was kept alive by tourism. In terms of the scale of this game's mall, I once did a trip to do volunteer work in a town with a failing economy. They had closed fast food places, the town square was practically empty, homeless people were everywhere, but they had a huge sprawling mall up on a hill with a walmart right next to it. It wasn’t quite to Willamette levels, but it was bigger than most towns of that size would realistically have. I found out that in general, a lot of towns of that size have some sort of rich family or company funding the town in the background.

Fun fact: if you see portraits or photos of faces, like the baseball team around 12:30, it's most likely the dev team putting their faces over photos, or actually doing a photoshoot. Lots of games do this, and it's usually the art team having some fun really, and avoids some copyright stuff easily

I like how Homerunners is such a tiny store, where it would be very difficult to not notice you were passing the register on your way in, and practically impossible to not locate it if you just looked around, and also you'd never be further than like fifteen feet from the single employee staffing the register, yet nevertheless there is a gigantic custom "CASHIER" sign hanging above the counter. The moving floor/travelator was originally conceived as a way to get people quickly to their destination in airports/train stations/similar where you have a central hub, but the stuff you want to get to is always a bit of a walk. The floor is supposed to move at about half of a normal walking speed, as that's just fast enough to make a significant difference while not being so fast as to encourage stopping(thereby making it take longer rather than less time). A lot of places now run them even slower, since most people using them have bags or suitcases and they'd rather stand on it for three minutes than walk for one minute.

There was a time when malls like this were specifically built in areas where the real estate was cheap. Hard to believe it today but people would be willing to travel up to an hour away to go to a mega mall in a rural area. Developers would also sell the idea of building a mall in these communities by offering jobs and economic growth as incentives for the local community. Of course, Amazon and other forms of e-commmerce have since changed that and now these types of malls are just big empty buildings.

Kind of like State of Decay, but localized to the mall.
