It always seemed pretty obvious to me that she was dealing with a lot of damage. It’s a shame that she lashes out at people in a way that is perpetuating the cycle of abuse, but it takes a ton of insight and bravery to recognize that behavior in yourself and actively try to change it. It also usually takes therapy. I don’t know if she’s ever sought help, but I’m sure it would do her a world of good. Her musical talent is just too great to let her own demons continue to sabotage her career.

@@alephmale3171 this has nothing to do with religious belief and a religious idea of “good” really. Everyone can benefit from talking to a therapist, especially with the times we are going through. to this day, she always hypes up 212 and i remember a couple months ago, some hater said, “why do you keep bringing up an old song of yours? they old asf” but like you mentioned in the video; it was her first break through. It was her escape to a good life and getting the recognition her deserves. Look I am NOT defending her transphobic, homophobic or xenophobic comments at all, but she has had many traumas she had to deal with. This isn’t excuses, only reasons for her behavior. I can tell she tries her best to improve and I would say that she is improving. Mental health isn’t a straight line upward, its a bumpy loop that goes forward. I hope she gets back into the grind. I hope she remembers that these haters got nothing on her and she can improve at any age.

It drives me crazy to see comments on the 212 video saying things like "She could have been great but she ruined herself, now no one will recognize how ahead of the times this was" or things similar. If we're all still talking about 212 and have never stopped revisiting it over the entire last decade.....she never faded into obscurity or became irrelevant. @@ectoplastiic as an artist her music is great. She honestly gave me a song I loved on first listen as a kid and 212 till this day is on my playlist. However, her social media outbursts and comments and remarks have effected and hurt me when I have come across them and got me very upset and effected my mental health. I was struggling with a lot of things in life growing up, whether it is similar to hers or not, I wouldn’t ever say anything bitter, spiteful or go as far as she has regardless of trauma. Sadly trauma isn’t an free pass or excuse to do what she has done. So yeh. She is an artist who fucked herself over and people are very much valid to feel hurt by her when she hurts millions of people with her words. She’s an artist, it’s her decision to become one and many responsibilities come with that title, it’s just a concept of growing up and realising her actions have consequences.

Azealia’s messiness is clearly more driven by bitterness, trauma and mental health struggles than it is by legit hate. Doesn’t really excuse it though, considering it still impacts others. And even when she has some decipherable and uncomfortable points, it’s weighed down by vitriol. I do love her swag. And it’s evident that many artists respect her work and/or have been influenced by her. She’s just become too much of a pariah for them to acknowledge her. While “Broke With Expensive Taste” might be the best female hip-hop album ever, even with its flaws.

Azealia Banks' music oozes personality like no other. How she's able to pick and choose productions and sounds and compliment them with her lyrics to really get you into the vast variety of moods and minds that she envisions for the songs is beyond amazing. Her ability to switch rhyme schemes at the drop of a hat and almost build up/break down the tempo of a song through the same is amazing. She obviously has issues on a personal front that have been unresolved but that doesn't take away from the fact that she is an amazing artist.

It was very different back then. All the rock stars in the 70’s and 80’s walking around with 15-16 year old groupies and NOBODY batted an eye. So sick! In Europe the age of consent laws are extremely low. On average they range from 14-16 years of age. When I was 15 I had a brief relationship with a 30 year old man and today I’m so disgusted by how he didn’t see anything wrong with it. I also looked very young at 15 (people mistake me for 17-18 today and I’m 28 now) so I believe that he was a pedophile tbh.

She needed someone but nobody was REALLY there. She could have avoided soooo much negative things now if she really had someone with her best interest at heart with her. This doesn’t excuse her actions now but this explains ALOT of it. I’m sorry, Azealia Banks, for misjudging you all these years. At first, I only heard of Banks from her beefs or controversies, which kind of put me off to ever listening to her music. But as I’ve become more acquainted with her music in the past year, admittedly from accident as a result of Spotify playlists, I realize she is actually a full-on pioneer with outstanding range and versatility. No one does it like she does. She is a bop powerhouse. Also, she can sing in Spanish too! She brings such pastiche and, to a degree, camp, in her music. And since many of the people she argued with have ended up showing their asses the past year, I realized that much of the time, she was right all along. Hopefully Azealia gets the roses and accolades she deserves, especially as people re-examine their prior misjudgments about her. I’m a fan now.

I am black and lgbt and I find is crazy when others, especially non black folks, try to use her blackness as a reason to give her sympathy for the things that she says. She deserves sympathy for her trauma DESPITE her words and actions and those as important distinctions. I don’t like the whole “she is misunderstood just because she is black’ like… yeah she will have a harder time unfortunately for being black in the industry and that aint right but it’s disingenuous to act as if the majority of reasons why she is misunderstood isnt because her mental illness and trauma are mixed up with comments of racism, colorism, anti lgbt narratives etc because it is the reality
