"Give up your dreams and die" - this perfectly summarizes what makes AOT so great for me
@akitainu44312 ай бұрын
My interpretation of Erwin's character is that he isn't as inherently selfish as he paints himself to be. Sure, if you draw a comparison between him and Levi (which I believe is the most selfless in the whole series), Erwin is willing to let people die for his cause. But Erwin has always put his life on the line, no matter the circumstances, alongside his comrades. Even in situations of great peril (like retrieving Eren from Reiner and Bertholdt in s2), Erwin was on the front lines and didn't think twice before ordering his troops to focus on the mission and push forward, when he himself was half in the mouth of a titan. He amputated his own arm just to save Eren, and although many lives were lost, the mission succeeded. When orchestrating the coup, Erwin knew he was at great risk of being executed, yet he still went through with the plan. Erwin also came up with the long distance scouting formation, which greatly reduced the numbers of deaths on expeditions. He made a push for his tactics to be implemented, even though it put a target on his back (i.e. Levi getting employed to assassinate Erwin) The argument could be made he did all this only for himself, to see his father's theory proven right and fulfill his own dream. But Erwin's dream is interlaced with humanity's victory and freedom. It's important to keep in mind Erwin's an unreliable narrator, as well - he was ridden with guilt and self-hatred in the Shinghanshina Arc, and he might've well been thinking so low of himself for a long time till then, when we got a glimpse of his inner monologue. Erwin placed the blame for his comrade's deaths only on himself. It's a heavy burden to carry, yet he never complained or backed out in order to save his own skin. This is proven especially true during his last conversation with Levi before he reveals his plan. Levi proposes his idea first, that he'd act as a distraction only to allow Erwin to make it back safely home. Erwin doesn't take one second to hesitate and immediately shoots down Levi's plan. It's also testament to how much they value each other. Erwin was a slave to his dream. His dream was what kept him pushing forward, but so can be said about all the othet characters part of the AoT universe. They all had a driving force. It kind of irks me sometimes how Armin's dream is placed above Erwin's, since I don't see how it is more selfless than Erwin's.
@Recency-Bias2 ай бұрын
Those are some really great points, especially the thing about him being an unreliable narrator. That's one reason I think he's such a great character, he places so much on himself, and, just like a normal person would, he is very hard on himself. Personally I think both his and Armin's dream are equal in value. The main reasons Levi choose Armin though, is that his dream is the natural progression from Erwin's dream, and if Erwin was a slave to his dream what would he do after it had been fulfilled.

It’s because Erwin just wanted the truth armin wanted the world Erwin completed his goal and he knew at least Levi would learn the truth and Levi was basically a son to him to he definitely didn’t die sad he was probably so happy that maybe Levi would truly finally get a chance to save the world. Honestly it’s better that way anyway if only one of them could live to learn the truth he would pick Levi if it was a random he could die sad but if only him or Levi could know it’s fine that it’s Levi and he can die happy

Thank you for an amazing video! Their story is so tragic and beautiful. The only thing I wanted to add is that both the first time and the last time we see the Wings of Freedom, it's Erwin .who wears it. So while it's a symbol of every original Survey Corps member, I think Erwin represents it the most, especially when we see this symbol disappearing for the last time, on Erwin's back.

I love how Erwin is actually a selfish person, but hides it under the facade of the Commander that everyone expects him to be. It all changed when Erwin chose humanity rather than seeing his dream become a reality during RTS arc.
@FilipPetrovic9992 ай бұрын
His goal and humanity's goal coincided. humanity really had to learn the truth in order to move forward and defeat the titans. The moment he realizes that he has to choose between himself and humanity, he chooses humanity's interest before his own. That is the definition of a selfless man.

If Erwin was alive, he would be a Yeagerist.
@KageFrankenstein2 ай бұрын
Actually, there is a pretty good chance they wouldn't exist or wouldn't be that big deal as they followed him mainly because there was "no one better" for leadership position. Erwin is quite good at playing this role (not necessarily good as a person), most of them would probably follow him. Of course, he might lose some motivation after discovering the basement, he would still play. And he would probably drag hundreds to their deaths again. Maybe it would change a few more things, but not necessarily for the better (I doubt Eren would really want to fully cooperate with them after Armin's death because of Levi's decision).
@krtkjkr2 ай бұрын
The Yeagerists were just a bunch of fascists and they only existed because Erwin died and the military system became a mess. How tf Erwin would have been on their side?? You must understand nothing about Erwin's character to say something like this.
@yup73802 ай бұрын
@@krtkjkr Yeah, Erwin ain't the type of person who will get consumed by the mentality of kill or be killed. Just like he said in his speech, I'm gonna paraphrase it, does being born only to die later means everything you do is pointles? NOOOO. He would fight the global leader oppressors and drag many even innocent to die but not to the point of which Eren and Yeagerist did. After all, the ideal of Survey Corps is to dedicate your heart to humanity not to your country or that sort of nationalisme or extremist like yeagerist.
