00:00 Levi's 501 Jeans Introduction
Levi’s is perhaps the most iconic American jean, starting out as a heavy-duty workwear item and soon becoming a stylish fashion piece. Today, Levi’s jeans remain popular all over the world, but are they truly a great investment?
00:51 History of Levi's
The first pair of Levi’s 501 jeans were manufactured in 1890. Unfortunately, the company records before 1906 were lost, so not even Levi’s knows the origin of the 501 number, but we do know that it simply ties into the original riveted jeans.
02:23 Iconic Styling Details
We chose these jeans because they are a classic mid-blue color with tan stitching - kind of the quintessential jeans if you will.
05:44 Denim Fabric
With the different finishes available within the 501 style, it’s easy to see how there’s a difference in fabric that is used and how in recent years, the 501 has been more about focusing on fit rather than staying true to the original 501 model.
07:22 Fit (& Other Factors to Consider)
The straight fit against the leg is preferable for a much more classic wardrobe and will work with a number of items and a classic wardrobe as well.
We’ve already touched on some of the confusion around some of the different fit differences within the 501 range, but things get even more confusing when it comes to the price.
Levi’s seems to base much of their pricing based on location. For example, the pair of 501 jeans that we’re looking at today can be found for $59.50 if you’re in North America, or £75 if you’re in the United Kingdom. Even with a fluctuating exchange rate, that’s still quite the difference in price.
09:00 Buying Our 501s
The 501 jeans that we purchased are a great pair of jeans. They are a classic style that epitomize blue jeans, and it’s easy to see how Levi’s is so popular all over the world.
10:23 Are Levi’s 501s Worth It?
On average, yes. We think that they’re worth it. For regular readers of the Gentleman’s Gazette, we can imagine that these are going to be the ideal jeans for you to include in your wardrobe as the straight fit, the deep blue color will be an ideal thing that will work well with a lot of things in your wardrobe. Perhaps, even a piece of soft casual tailoring.

After offshoring, the weight of the denim and the overall fit and finish of the 501 in particular and Levi's in general significantly declined. The then-chair of Levi's decimated what was left of U.S. manufacture and heavy weight denim construction. He's since been hired to be the chairman of Gibson Guitars, and I fully expect that the same pattern is going to repeat itself.

To help prevent fading, wash jeans inside out with the water temp set on "cold". Use Woolite "Dark" detergent. Hang to dry or partially dry in a dryer with a timed setting (30 mins depending on machine and # of pairs of jeans) on "very low" temp setting. Also still inside out. Then hang after to completely dry. The color will last longer.

In around 1971, as a kid. I bought my first pair of Levi's. They was so stiff, they could stand up on their own! They lasted years. Climbing tree's and doing general kids stuff. Levi jeans have for the last 30+ years have been NO better than any other make. Imagine my joy on finding LVC vintage selvedge jeans. I bought two pairs £150 per pair. The knee on 1 pair split after 12 months. The front pockets failed on both pairs. At 65 years old. I no longer climb tree's etc. If these LVC selvedge jeans were, what they was supposed to be. They would burying me in them at 100 years old. Basically. Levi jean's are cheap rags. It pains me to say. But i will not buy another Levi product. Japanese selvedge raw denim from now on.

20 years ago?? They were already really bad 20 years ago. The average person has not been able to buy good quality levis since 1986, the last year of what is considered "vintage". That said , Levis used to have Vintage Clothing line that reproduced versions of their classic jeans using the original cotton but since the original milling factory (Cone Mills) shut down, the quality has deteriorated. But who cares ultimately? We shouldn't be buying brands anyway which are little more than marketing gimmicks today For those into vintage denim there are plenty of smaller companies today that do it right and are not cliches

For me, the standout when buying levi’s is the service. Even in outlet stores, they’re typically very well stocked and the staff are very helpful. It’s one of the few brands I will occasionally shop at retail, because the extra money you pay is worth tge great service, and the knowledge that if you go to a levi’s store, unless you’re very hard to size, you will walk out with something that fits great.

In the US, it definitely is not, but outside of the US, Levi's has always been more of a luxury product. I remember as a kid growing up in Germany, Levi's 501 were the most expensive jeans where I lived. Even today, they sell fo the equivalent of $120 - $250 over there. In the US you can get them for under $40 on amazon... Many brands realized that entering new markets was a chance for them to position themselves in a new light. It's the same with McDonalds. In the US they are the cheapest tier of fast food, in Eastern Europe or Asia they are a being rich and having made it...

In the south you can get a pair of 501s for about $50. However, I have bought them at Brooks Brothers for $125. The denim for the Brooks Brothers jeans was much thicker and the quality was much better. We found a pair of Levis my husband wore back in the 80s and the quality of the denim was the same as the Brooks Brothers $125 pair we bought several years ago. I think the denim and quality of Levis has gone down very much in recent years. You can buy them at Costco, where the denim is thin. I did buy a Levis jacket recently which seemed to be made well but all the other denim jackets I looked at were made well too. I find the women's sizes to run small and short.

I wore Levi 560 for 30 years but recently switched to Carhartt with the double front and they last 4 times longer as work pants. Tip: Carhartts with leather rear patches are made in Mexico, the ones with fabric patches are Made in USA.

Will it make a difference wether I buy my Levi's in an factory outlet store, in a brand shop or online? I have worn Levi's since chidhood because I like the look and will always find a perfectly fitting pair with minimal effort. But in recent years all my jeans seem to get holes in the crotch area after two to three years, most recently four pairs of 511 I bought in the nearby outlet store. Just before the most recent 511 I bought got holes I bought two pairs of 512 online to test this out, but I don't like them as much and so now I am without a good pair of 511. The question is, are the samples from an outlet store of inferior quality and the samples from brand stores and the online shop will last longer or do I have to look for higher quality and longer lasting jeans elsewhere?

Yes, the ones sold at the outlet stores are made to a much lower standard of quality to get the lower price point.

I bought a pair of 501 dark blue non stone wash last year. After wearing it for few month, small spots start to appear. Slowly these spots turned white and fabric disintegrated away. So now I have a new 501 with 3 spots. I have no idea how the spots came about and tried recalling if I had in contact with any chemicals. But none. I’m just very disappointed with Levi’s. And this had never happened to my other jeans before.

Not sure if the 501s really warrant an "Is It Worth It?" feature. Tons of people wear these on a regular basis, and for most of us they sit between $50-$80, and kinda max out at ~$100 depending on where you're at. When you consider the type of high-end products this series usually covers, it doesn't really fit. That said, I definitely think it would've made more sense to cover something from the LVC or Made & Crafted lines, or even Lot 1s. Those are a much higher price tag, and hopefully much higher quality, but not quite as accessible or well-known to everyone

I've also got in my collection a pair of roundhouse and they've worn and faded beautifully too. I don't think I could ever go back to Levi's. The denims too light.

I work in fashion. Only one that safe and will look good is black tie You can wear white but it look cheap. In Europe a black shirt look fine with denim tuck in and out if right shape. Shortly and not squared off Not so sure about canal pant . Depends on shirt. A black denim shirts or other military style will work . If your very out there you could were pink and black or lilac. But agian it not easy to pull off .

In the 90's I got my first job at Sears in the mens department. And a few times a year Russian tourists would come into the store and a swear to god they would buy every simple 501 we had in the store. I asked them why they did that and they said at the time they could t get them in Russia and they had a ridiculously high resale value over there.

Unless pre-washed from the Levi factory, the first laundering is going to shrink these in length - a lot! (This only applies to 501, not other styles, e.g. 505 with the zipper).

Never dry 501s they will hold the ironing much better as they will be almost plywood stiff after drying. I always buy mine 2 inches longer than I normally ware...it's a cowboy thing from being in the saddle...but I think the bunching of the starched legs looks best.

I have always just gotten cheap jeans, but afterwards perhaps an hour, they stretch beyond tolerance. I’m talking they’re three inches longer in the leg and I walk on a couple of inches. In the waist, I’d say they expand over two full sizes. They fall off without a belt. If I invest in real Levis will that vanish?

LOL at "every ten years" I can't imagine how foul any pants would get in ten years if they're worn for more than a few hours once a week. Ten wears makes more sense, but I usually do once a week when I'm wearing them all day. Levis are simply daily wear and only better than other brands because their fit is more consistent. The 505's are slightly more comfortable and convenient because they're a touch looser in the thigh and have a zipper fly.
