That chromatic line to the E harmonic starting at measure 17 was so cool. I don't recall if Steve Vai ever mentioned Gatton as an influence, but many parts of this remind me of Tender Surrender. The tempo changes, the ascending/descending chord lines, the harmonics and even some of the bends...

I love how intentional his playing is. I tend to be a "noodler" and try to fill all of the space. This is a great showcase in being selective with your note choices, which makes the playing far more interesting.

My dad had me listen to Harlem Nocturne when I was 8 or so. I felt the darkness and was so attracted to the feel. As a little kid I didn’t know what to call what I was feeling. But it stuck HARD. "Harlem Nocturne" is a jazz standard written by Earle Hagen (music) and Dick Rogers (lyrics) in 1939 for the Ray Noble orchestra, of which they were members. The song was chosen by the big-band leader Randy Brooks the next year as his theme song. The most famous version version by the Viscounts an American pop group from New Jersey, formed in 1958 releasing the song twice and on the Billboard charts each time: first in 1959, when it peaked at #53, and again in 1966, peaking at #39 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In a version with Bud Shank on sax Harlem Nocturne was used as the theme song of the television series Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer in 1984. Harold Faltermeyer recorded a version for the soundtrack to the film Tango & Cash. In 1990, the pianist Kofi Wilmot gained popularity in the instrumental world for his cover version from the album of the same name, Harlem Nocturne. Danny Gatton released a version in 1993 on his album Cruisin' Deuces (Elektra/Rhino). Some singers have recorded "Harlem Nocturne", adding lyrics. Mel Tormé and others recorded a versions with lyrics. It is more known for saxophone to lead the melody but there are other guitar versions including by: Alternative Guitar Summit: feat. I used to sit just a few feet away from Gatton at the Birchmere club in Alexandria. Sometimes there weren’t even that many people at the club. He would ask for a requests and often times I would say play a blues or play Harlem nocturne. I’ve actually seen much better versions of the song in this video. But to be there and have the sound that he was channeling from who knows where wash over you is a surreal experience. I went to Berklee College of music, but I learned more from Gatton then anywhere else sitting at his feet.

First got introduced to Danny through Arlen Roth’s Masters Of The Telecaster book…along with the likes of Roy Buchanan and Albert Lee This is also the most detailed transcription I’ve seen; if memory serves GuitarWorld did a version which was very good, but they admitted that it was very approximate & they couldn’t include all the little nuances But you have! Thanks

I became long-distance Phone friends with Danny and he was very generous with his time offering many tone tips. He told me to buy Joe Barden pick ups, and I did when Joe lived in Virginia went to his house and put them in my tele, which my granddaughter now has. I saw there about half a dozen times when he came to toronto, but was way too shy to introduce myself to him. He is dearly missed by all.

For all you guitar aficionado’s I would like to introduce my cousin “ Sandy Nassan” who when he was in his 20s recorded an lp titled “ Just Guitar” on a small obscure label What I would like you to listen to is his 16 1/2 minute first cut that I believe will blow your mind! Sandy wrote and performed it and some consider it a one-a-kind “ new age” masterpiece before new age was officially recognized as such! All I ask of you is to let me know how you truly feel. I’m a vocalist and haven’t heard many other guitar solos. So I’m sure there are many other great guitar soloists. After a couple decades my cousin opted to go back to college and learn prosthetic’s and he is now in his 50’s and a Doctor. But one night when he played the guitar, Billy Joel” came to Cincinnati to give a concert and Billy invited my cousin to open the show for him. Sandy performed this 16 1/2 minute solo and it brought down the house. Everyone went bonkers. So please KZbin “ sandy nassan just guitar” and let me know what you think Much love, Al

You have to cut the bridge piece back on the bottom rail for that guitar to be closer to Danny's. He also had a metal fingernail file stuck up under the top of the bridge piece from time to time.

Saw Danny pay one night in Grottoes Virginia. At the time he was playing his Black Beauty Les Paul with his Magic Dingus box attached to the body. One of the greatest experiences ever! Wish I could call him an influence on my playing, but for me he was just to stratospheric of a player to even try and copy.

Danny Gatton had tons of talent but really could not crystallize all of the styles that he favored. He wanted to play everything all of the time. His hillbilly jazz was not a winning formula. Sometimes talent is a curse that destroys good people. RIP Danny. Great song.
