What’s so cool about this for me and what adds so much texture to this version, is that the instrumental introducing musical ideas before the vocals creates a certain setup/payoff structure, kind of like jazz where the band members are responding to each other musically. I often find pop to be a little too structured and packaged feeling. Everything is boxed into its section of the song if that makes sense. This fixes that for me.

I think I know why this sounds more instrumental focused. In the original song, the changes in the beat happen at the same time Dua sings a new section (verse/bridge/chorus etc.), so they go under the radar because you’re used to the beat changing when the section of the song changes. But because the transition from verse -> bridge or bridge -> chorus or chorus -> verse is delayed, it doesn’t coincide with the change in beat, and so you notice the beat changes much more, especially because so few pop songs switch up the instrumental outside of a transition

@willjackson65225 ай бұрын
I think the reason it feels so much more interesting is because you are getting essentially double the combinations of instrumental and vocal sections. The regular song assigns instrumental changes to each vocal section, but this version starts with an instrumental section then brings in a vocal section halfway through that, then brings in a new instrumental section halfway through that vocal section, and so on. It’s so much less predictable, even though the original is still great.

So someone point out 1:20 in the comments and maaaan its by far my favorite part. Makes the vocal and music battle in a good way. Unlike in the original. (Which I loved) But damn this version realllllly makes the song shine and with just a simple 4 bar shift of the lyrics. That's crazy such a simple thing completely leveled this song up. Allowing the lyrics and instrumental introduce new parts themselves first here and there and not at the same time is something a bunch of EDM genres do. Nice to hear it happen in a pop song for a surprise.

I think that the reason it sounds so good is that the structure of the instrumental doesn't mimic the structure of the vocals as it does in the original song. In the delayed version, the instrumental changes mid-verse and the „chorus” consists of two different parts instead of one part repeating itself twice. It's just more complex.
@newmanhiding231426 күн бұрын
“It’s just more complex” really says it all. Pop music nowadays is too simplistic. It’s not bad. It just needs a new philosophy.

I think it highlights what's both good and bad about the original very well. It feels more like a band performing and grooving where they feel necessary. But there is also some places where the punchiness is lost. It's a good study in how writing pop music could be done in a less traditional way to great effect. Just imagine a complete rewrite with this as the inspiration.

First thing I noticed was that there is a few bars where the beat “cools off” at the end of the chorus which is a neat effect. It’s almost like the opposite effect of a “drop” which builds hype before the chorus, this takes some time to chill even while the chorus is still not quite done. ❤

A lot was changed but big factors: The repeating of the chorus isnt as boring anymore! Every pop song really needs to work on making the repetitions in a song enjoyable and unique rather than catchy. Because of these factors, and thanks to the beat: it feels like the song is actually a story. Theres a start. A middle. And an end. So many songs feel like there's a good start, then the song. Maybe a little bit of an end. But it doesnt feel like the song is building up, EXPLOSION, then conclusion. That's how an average pop song should feel in my opinion. AN ENDING THAT FEELS LIKE AN ENDING. With the instrumentals gone, it gives the effort she put in her vocals more spotlight. She sung it in a way that felt like it was the end. And the lack of music helped pronounce that. Too many songs, just end. I want proper endings.

I believe 9 seconds exactly matches 4 bars which is the basic unit that this song is built around (even though the larger sections, eg chorus take longer). Thus 4 bars moved to the right still fit the general theme of the song, while introducing a lot more diversity, because we now have more different combinations of vocals with music. Really well done!

In the original the instrumental is lined up with the vocals. The 9 seconds in question would be 4 bars. Now in the original song there’s a change to the variation on the theme every 8 bars cause again, the instrumental and vocals are lined up with each other, however by pushing the vocals 4 bars you get an interesting switch every 4 bars (one in the vocals and one in the instrumental) over the course of the 8 bars and the producer made the song a little more interesting and unpredictable by making each part, both instrumental and vocal, interact with not one, but two variations of their counterparts. (idk if you’ll understand, it makes sense in my head I’m sorry!!) One could argue that this could be done with most pop music because there is definitely a formula that’s being used over and over and over again and I am definitely looking forward to seeing more remixes like this one
