Levon was the consistently good voice on so many Band songs, providing the backdrop that often stabilized the then lead singer. And of course his performance on The Last Waltz with "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" was a tour de force. Will never be eclipsed. He gave it his all that night.

The great thing about the Band: All of them could do different stuff in the band. Except Robbie, he could just compose, sing and play the guitar,

Good point, Robbie could indeed compose and play guitar...both done very well. Sing? well he could sing, but then anybody at a karaoke pub can sing. It's just that all the producers muted his singing out whenever they could!

I would have given anything to have seen The Ramble at the Ryman. Levon Helm never gave up and it seems that instead of laughing in the face of death, he was singing. This remarkably talented man was able to do what he loved-playing for an audience, almost right up to the end. Thank God he was stubborn enough to not give up when he first lost his voice. He had an excellent vocal coach and tons of determination. The world lost an extraordinary man when he passed away.

Some people may think that musicians just sit up there and 'play'. After a certain number of songs, it gets to be a test of physical endurance. Levon sang and played drums for shows/concerts that lasted hours, for a period spanning fifty years. Try doing that.! Levons ability to keep playing through his later years, after a cancer diagnosis, is a testament to his physical, and spiritual strength. Then, after an operation for his throat cancer, (mid 2000's)..his doctor tells him that he may never TALK again. Levon had the strength, and will to go back to 'just playing drums', but eventually, he just had to sing,.. So, 'snoxbox', get a clue.
@SumanDuarahabcdefis66 жыл бұрын
Music gave him the energy perhaps which even he didn't realize when on the stage. And steady till the last words from his mouth, the last crash on the drums, no signs of tiredness did I see in any of his live concerts (full length)...*!
@markrothenberg98674 жыл бұрын
I read Levon didn’t have an operation he chose to have radiation treatment. It caused damage to his vocal chords. So thankful his voice came back but that was because his spirit and smile never left.

It's great man, seeing his mind all in it, trying to force his body to respond to his thoughts. Everything is there, he's still got it, no matter what people say about whether he did or didn't. The body disintegrates over time, no shit, but the mind can stay as pure as it wants (if it's in your control)....his mind was great up until the end.

Here's the fact. At the dawn of that decade (2000), everyone assumed the Band's last great voice had been silenced forever. And then there it was; older, craggier, rougher, but somehow as emotive and pure as ever, it was back. If Levon couldn't hit every note all the time, well dammit, he hit most of them, and each time he sang was just glorious, like seeing someone given a new lease on life.
