I am in an awesome flight program ( Part 141) and the textbook entry into a flight pattern is strictly taught and used. I love it. Makes me a better student pilot and gives me so much more confidence as well as the safety aspect. VEry glad they are sticklers :)

Not knowing how high I was above the runway was a huge challenge when I was initially learning to fly. Takes a lot of practice to dial that in. Then you have to start over when you use a new aircraft (tho you will learn it a lot faster than the first time)

Ella’s doing great. I noticed her doing something on short final that my student does sometimes: oscillating bank left and right. I felt like a pendulum when he was doing it and realized what he was doing with the controls.

Amazing instruction. I got a chance to fly a Cardinal 177 a couple days ago. I had to do the Google search to figure out what this plane was. It’s just another Cessna, but structurally different. So I had a young instructor teach the basics in the pattern. Very different aircraft and comments about PIO’s from when it was first launched. Had a great flight, learning a different airframe and mastering it in the pattern. Learning never stops.

I use the four 90 degree headings to help me keep my pattern symmetrical, i.e. if upwind is 25, I know rt. xwind = @34, downwind = 7, rt. base = 16... I break the heading indicator into 4 pieces of pie! Great flying Ella!

Hey Ella great landings , the thing that helped me with keeping my turns more rectangular and being center line is that rudder control I really used that to guide like how you do on the ground but still very impressive landings way to goo!!

Yeah, I had this issue where I struggled with the flare. Turned out I needed to shift my eyes to the end of the runway a bit earlier, and suddenly it clicked. And thanks to that I got to solo two weeks ago!

@@LewDixAviation I get it, it’s an age old disagreement amongst CFIs. Now, here is something interesting I think. In the beginning of my career, back in 1996, I flew a Learjet 24 out of KORL for about 9 months, as a first Officer. We flew cancelled bank checks, every Monday through Thursday. We would leave around Midnight and return around 3AM in the morning. (Flying to Charlotte and Jacksonville) One day our regular airplane was in for maintenance and they gave us a different Learjet, one we had never flown before. We took off from 25, hit V1, Vr, I called for rotate and my Captain pulled back on the yoke, fully aft, but nothing happened. We aborted well past Vr, around 150 knots. We went full on the brakes and I was convinced we were fine, because the airplane decelerated so quickly. But then the brakes got too hot and the pedals became mushy and suddenly, it didn’t look that great. We over ran the runway by about 50 feet, we probably left the pavement less than 30 knots. We shut down the engines and suddenly saw a glow of fire, so we evacuated, head first out of the top of the clamshell door. All it was, was a grass fire that got started due to our hot brakes. No other damage. They found out that our elevator cables were old and able to stretch. A full flight control check would give the elevator a full deflection, but with an air load of 120 knots, the elevator would only deflect around 30%. Anyway, that’s my KORL experience. Loved the area, lived in Altamonte Springs. It is a cool town to live in.

I see her doing something that I did when I was learning. When coming in on final she is constantly banking left and right. I guess it annoyed my instructor enough that he told me to stop and hold it still. You still have to make centerline corrections, but the plane really stabilizes itself pretty well. Plus, once I stopped doing that, it was far easier to concentrate on the other parts of landing. I think that just comes with time in the left seat. I don't think it is a bad thing at all. I think most people do this at first. Overall though, she is absolutely crushing it.

Glad you liked it! You must be flying in the UK haha. I get a lot of questions relating to that. The POH states, for landing - “Carburetor heat should be applied prior to any significant reduction or closing the throttle.” Nowhere does it say to remove it on short final. I understand why people do that, but that’s not a procedure that I follow.

Interested to understand the way carb heat is used by you. When I was learning in a carbied tomahawk, the checklist on short finals included removing carb heat. My understanding was that if a go-around was needed, full power was available immediately. Is it a Cessna thing?

I simply use it the way the POH tells me to. It doesn't say anything about removing it before landing. In fact it tells me to turn carb heat on before any significant reduction or closing the throttle. The landing requires closing of the throttle, thus, I leave it on. Some people like to take it out before landing in case they need to go around. I don't use that procedure. I trust myself to remember to remove carb heat before introducing power for the takeoff or go around, whatever the situation may be.

Carb ice is most likely to build in a low power state (like landing), so if you remove carb heat, then you could build carb ice and not have full power like you are expecting on a go-around. Technically, you should push throttle first and then remove carb heat to burn off carb ice, but it's marginal. The only reason to close the carb heat on final that made sense to me is to prevent sucking in dust if it's a dirty field, but I have never bothered.
