It's just light hearted banter ...people having fun ...my mum was born in Kier Street way before its was posh ...she always told us about bonfire night ...keep our traditions going...

Fair enough, like I said I'm not advocating stopping it either. Not sure how I would feel if I was a devout catholic though

I think its a great idea if other villages adopt this event in a large way. And also bring back Harvest Festival. Its great to pull the community together with exciting events.

There were a great many villages already taken part, participation seems very high

As a Lewes resident I think your description of Lewes bonfire in a few mins is brilliant.. Can be hard to explain sometimes 😅 Looks like you had a good and safer viewing spot. Thanks for your cycling videos.. Always great to watch 😁

Many thanks, I had a great viewing spot from a flat on the High Street. Tried to explain it the best I can but have to admit I don't fully understand it!

It’s not compulsory to attend. Keep on cycling into the distance

this guy, is really misses the whole point of Lewes.....no fun for fear of being upset!! How self important is someone who expects to go through life and not be upset by another opinion or point of view.

It shouldn’t be band. Great video, thanks for making 🙏

If you are going to start moaning about health and safety, please don't come next time. Bonfire is not for Tourists and there are shed load of police. Really sad you had to be negative at the end of your video. The whole no popery thing is part of the tradition, it is basically a play, theatre. Don't take it so serious. Focus on your bike videos.

Thinking of going later, is it worth turning up or will you not be able to get into the high street or see anything. The journey will involve staying up all night and getting the first train back in the morning.

Incredible is beyond words… have you been part of it I have and I will be in 2024. Safety is part and parcel with being in the society. Why don’t you join us for one bonfire celebration and walk the miles we did and then have an opinion!

I come from a catholic background and am not offended at all , the pope element is not taken seriously by most and celebrates the right of the majority against a religo/political terrorist plot to take down king and parliment. I love the event and everything in it, no barriers, no to banning fire crackers or torches etc , when i went there was rolling barrels of fire, has this been stopped?, if so, what a shame, it was dramatic and exciting.
@themuddycyclist6 күн бұрын
@@paulmagus2133 Fair point, I believe the rolling of the burning barrels still continues but I haven’t witnessed it. Think my point is if Lewes Bonfire didn’t exist and someone proposed it now, would it be accepted? And if it’s accepted that the Catholic Church are the ‘villains’ can similar festivals about Protestant and Muslims be held. IMO I think not.
@rdh-daliasjb37965 күн бұрын
@@themuddycyclist It's One Pope from hundreds of years ago, and the churchman being booed is a Protestant, as far as I know. Each bonfire society have "Archbishops" that address the crowd at the displays and have fireworks thrown at them.

I think you shouldn't be limited in doing anything based on whether someone somewhere will find it offensive, however I'm sure if they displayed something anti lgbt then ppl would get feral, but still don't think you should be too worried about being offensive and anyways some ppl nowadays get offended over anything so yea, freedom of speech right.
@mash83 Жыл бұрын
There's a bit of a difference, the anti pope stuff is purely pantomime and traditional. And if there's any actual meaningful sentiment it's punching up - truth to power etc.. the Catholic Church is known for many abuses of that power whereas someone preaching hate on an already oppressed abused minority is punching down. Not sure describing right minded people's response to that as "feral" is particularly fair.. attacks on minorities isn't freedom of speech.
@themuddycyclist Жыл бұрын
Think I basically agree with you, just because something is offensive doesn't mean it must be banned. However I understand where you draw that line will vary for different people. As for Lewes, I'm not religious so it didn't offend me!
@themuddycyclist Жыл бұрын
@@mash83I take your point about punching up, but Lewes Bonfire really isn't about highlighting the abuses of the Catholic Church. It feels more basic than that.
@mash83 Жыл бұрын
@TheMuddyCyclist no as I said it's panto but I'm sure plenty of the people attending feel it's a bit more than that.
