Lewis wasn’t quite accurate about the efficacy of walls in history. The Great Wall of China stopped a lot of invasions - especially by small groups. However, Lewis is right that a southern border wall won’t stop illegal immigration. The money spent on the wall would be better used trying to help Mexico and Central America be better places to live. Also, E-Verify would stop most American companies from exploiting illegal immigrants.

The Maginot was a great 'wall' fortress if everyone could have fought off the other arm invading. A few of the old fort bunkers were turned into mushroom farming units several years ago. But yes, a wall spanning the whole border was insanity. We already had 3 to 4 levels of people and vehicles to intercept border crossers, observe them moving around at night and day etc. all the walls did were sometimes redirect traffic and cost us tons of money.
