Lewis Latimer invented the carbon filament in 1881 or 1882? No! English chemist/physicist Joseph Swan experimented with a carbon-filament incandescent light all the way back in 1860, and by 1878 had developed a better design which he patented in Britain. On the other side of the Atlantic, Thomas Edison developed a successful carbon-filament bulb, receiving a patent for it (#223898) in January 1880, before Lewis Latimer did any work in electric lighting. From 1880 onward, countless patents were issued for innovations in filament design and manufacture (Edison had over 50 of them). Neither of Latimer's two filament-related patents in 1881 and 1882 were among the most important innovations, nor did they make the light bulb last longer, nor is there reason to believe they were adopted outside Hiram Maxim's company where Latimer worked at the time. (He was not hired by Edison's company until 1884, primarily as a draftsman and an expert witness in patent litigations).

Both SWAN and Edison had invented the light bulb, before Latimer had even patented his first improved carbon filament methods. Swan and Edison also went into business together, in England, based on an agreement, which followed. However, Swan, lit up the first houses, buildings, in history. Edison, clearly had the advantage, and produced a long lasting bulb, from the beginning, after trying endless methods, and bamboo filament proved the longest lasting at that point. In 1850 Joseph Wilson Swan created a “light bulb” by enclosing carbonized paper filaments in an evacuated glass bulb. Swan also improved on the invention of the bulb, by the time of its commercial use. While searching for a better filament for his light bulb, Swan inadvertently made another advance. He developed and patented a process for squeezing nitro-cellulose through holes to form fibers. ... The American inventor Hiram Maxim was one of the earliest contributors to the development of the incandescent lamp. His designs are particularly distinctive on account of the M-shaped filament, which is often speculated to have been chosen in view of its similarity to the first letter of his name. They were first produced in 1879 by the United States Electric Lighting Co. which had been established a year earlier in New York with Maxim as chief engineer, until perhaps as late as 1888 when it was taken over by Westinghouse. In 1881 Maxim emigrated to England, and established his own independent lamp works in London. This lamp is of quite different appearance than the typical long-necked American versions. Its platinum loop terminals and round bulb are more typical of Swan and other British lamps, a design which was not widely adopted in USA. It is therefore suspected that this lamp may be of UK origin. The filament is of carbonised paper and the leading-in wires are platinum throughout. The method of filament mounting is typical of Maxim lamps. He disliked the usual deposited carbon or electroplated joints of this era, fearing premature failure at the junction. To reduce temperatures at the joint as well as provide a large contact area, the filament tails are greatly enlarged. These are compressed tightly against the flattened lead-wires and sandwiched between a pair of platinum washers with the aid of tiny nuts and bolts. Maxim was also the inventor of the so-called flashing process, in which the filaments are first lighted in gasoline vapour. This forms a deposit of carbon over the filament, particularly in the area of hot-spots, to achieve a more uniform cross-section and allow it to be driven at higher efficacy. Now, Latimer, did work for him, Maxim, beginning around 1879. However, mostly as assistant manager, draftsman, although became instrumental to the company, and provided his own skills, improvements, however, his own patent, for manufacturing carbons, was in 1882. In 1884, the Edison Electric Light Company in New York City hired Latimer as a draftsman and expert witness in patent litigation on electric lights. Latimer also coauthored a book titled Incandescent Electric Lighting - A Practical Description of the Edison System. Book by C. J. Field, John White Howell, and Lewis Howard Latimer Book by C. J. Field, John White Howell, and Lewis Howard Latimer Edison screw - Edison screw (ES) is a standard lightbulb socket for electric light bulbs. It was developed by Thomas Edison, patented in 1881, and was licensed in 1909 under ... It differs, based on early European styles, etc.

But the problem with Latimer's filaments is a way to connect them to a power source. This was one of Edison's greatest hurdles. Latimer has a patent for a bulb that uses his carbon filament and a way to connect it to wires. However, that method will not work as the carbon filament is far to fragile to connect it in this way. This is the same thing Edison tried and found completely unreliable.

Edison even overworked Nikola Tesla and never paid him, and other people ripped off Tesla, stole his inventions and made him broke. If that can happen to a genius imagine what happened to African Americans. Many African Americans in those days were educated because their masters made money from their work and inventions (as they owned them), it probably stopped when white people realised they were getting too brainy and prevented them from learning especially when they started to buy off their freedom.

It begins, with Humphry Davy, Joseph Swan, through 1802 and 1850, while numerous independent inventors can also be named. Light bulbs with a carbon filament were first demonstrated by Joseph Swan in February 1879, and by Edison in October 1879. Carbon filament bulbs, the first electric light bulbs, became available commercially in 1879. - Latimer contributed to the work already done by Edison . He never actually invented carbon filament, or the light bulb, or electric lighting. In 1802, Humphry Davy invented the first electric light. He experimented with electricity and invented an electric battery. ... In 1850 an English physicist named Joseph Wilson Swan created a “light bulb” by enclosing carbonized paper filaments in an evacuated glass bulb. In 1881, the Savoy Theatre in the City of Westminster, London was lit by Swan incandescent lightbulbs, which was the first theatre, and the first public building in the world, to be lit entirely by electricity. The first street in the world to be lit by an incandescent lightbulb was Mosley Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. It was lit by Joseph Swan's incandescent lamp on 3 February 1879. ----------- Over the next seven decades, other inventors also created “light bulbs” but no designs emerged for commercial application. More notably, in 1840, British scientist Warren de la Rue enclosed a coiled platinum filament in a vacuum tube and passed an electric current through it. The design was based on the concept that the high melting point of platinum would allow it to operate at high temperatures and that the evacuated chamber would contain fewer gas molecules to react with the platinum, improving its longevity. Although an efficient design, the cost of the platinum made it impractical for commercial production. In 1850 an English physicist named Joseph Wilson Swan created a “light bulb” by enclosing carbonized paper filaments in an evacuated glass bulb. And by 1860 he had a working prototype, but the lack of a good vacuum and an adequate supply of electricity resulted in a bulb whose lifetime was much too short to be considered an effective producer of light. However, in the 1870’s better vacuum pumps became available and Swan continued experiments on light bulbs. In 1878, Swan developed a longer lasting light bulb using a treated cotton thread that also removed the problem of early bulb blackening. [...] With the help of Charles Stearn, an expert on vacuum pumps, in 1878, Swan developed a method of processing that avoided the early bulb blackening. This received a British Patent in 1880. On 18 December 1878, a lamp using a slender carbon rod was shown at a meeting of the Newcastle Chemical Society, and Swan gave a working demonstration at their meeting on 17 January 1879. It was also shown to 700 who attended a meeting of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle upon Tyne on 3 February 1879. These lamps used a carbon rod from an arc lamp rather than a slender filament. Thus they had low resistance and required very large conductors to supply the necessary current, so they were not commercially practical, although they did furnish a demonstration of the possibilities of incandescent lighting with relatively high vacuum, a carbon conductor, and platinum lead-in wires. This bulb lasted about 40 hours. Swan then turned his attention to producing a better carbon filament and the means of attaching its ends. He devised a method of treating cotton to produce 'parchmentised thread' in the early 1880s and obtained British Patent 4933 that same year. From this year he began installing light bulbs in homes and landmarks in England. His house, Underhill, Low Fell, Gateshead, was the first in the world to be lit by a lightbulb and also the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectric power. In 1878 the home of Lord Armstrong at Cragside was also among the first houses to be lit by electricity. In the early 1880s he had started his company. In fact, some historians claim there were over 20 inventors of incandescent lamps prior to Edison’s version. However, Edison is often credited with the invention because his version was able to outstrip the earlier versions because of a combination of three factors: an effective incandescent material, a higher vacuum than others were able to achieve and a high resistance that made power distribution from a centralized source economically viable. On July 24, 1874 a Canadian patent was filed by a Toronto medical electrician named Henry Woodward and a colleague Mathew Evans. They built their lamps with different sizes and shapes of carbon rods held between electrodes in glass cylinders filled with nitrogen. Woodward and Evans attempted to commercialize their lamp, but were unsuccessful. They eventually sold their patent to Edison in 1879. In 1761, Ebenezer Kinnersley demonstrated heating a wire to incandescence. Over the first three-quarters of the 19th century, many experimenters worked with various combinations of platinum or iridium wires, carbon rods, and evacuated or semi-evacuated enclosures. Many of these devices were demonstrated and some were patented. In 1835, James Bowman Lindsay demonstrated a constant electric light at a public meeting in Dundee, Scotland. He stated that he could "read a book at a distance of one and a half feet". However he did not develop the electric light any further. In 1838, Belgian lithographer Marcellin Jobard invented an incandescent light bulb with a vacuum atmosphere using a carbon filament. In 1840, British scientist Warren de la Rue enclosed a coiled platinum filament in a vacuum tube and passed an electric current through it. The design was based on the concept that the high melting point of platinum would allow it to operate at high temperatures and that the evacuated chamber would contain fewer gas molecules to react with the platinum, improving its longevity. Although a workable design, the cost of the platinum made it impractical for commercial use. In 1841, Frederick de Moleyns of England was granted the first patent for an incandescent lamp, with a design using platinum wires contained within a vacuum bulb. He also used carbon. In 1845, American John W. Starr patented an incandescent light bulb using carbon filaments. His invention was never produced commercially. In 1851, Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin publicly demonstrated incandescent light bulbs on his estate in Blois, France. His light bulbs are on display in the museum of the Château de Blois. In 1859, Moses G. Farmer built an electric incandescent light bulb using a platinum filament. He later patented a light bulb which was purchased by Thomas Edison. In 1872, Russian Alexander Lodygin invented an incandescent light bulb and obtained a Russian patent in 1874. He used as a burner two carbon rods of diminished section in a glass receiver, hermetically sealed, and filled with nitrogen, electrically arranged so that the current could be passed to the second carbon when the first had been consumed. Later he lived in the US, changed his name to Alexander de Lodyguine and applied and obtained patents for incandescent lamps having chromium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium, molybdenum and tungsten filaments, and a bulb using a molybdenum filament was demonstrated at the world fair of 1900 in Paris. On 24 July 1874, a Canadian patent was filed by Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans for a lamp consisting of carbon rods mounted in a nitrogen-filled glass cylinder. They were unsuccessful at commercializing their lamp, and sold rights to their patent (U.S. Patent 0,181,613) to Thomas Edison in 1879. Heinrich Göbel in 1893 claimed he had designed the first incandescent light bulb in 1854, with a thin carbonized bamboo filament of high resistance, platinum lead-in wires in an all-glass envelope, and a high vacuum. Judges of four courts raised doubts about the alleged Göbel anticipation, but there was never a decision in a final hearing due to the expiry date of Edison's patent. A research work published 2007 concluded that the story of the Göbel lamps in the 1850s is a legend The United States Patent Office gave a ruling 8 October 1883, that Edison's patents were based on the prior art of William Sawyer and were invalid. Litigation continued for a number of years. Eventually on 6 October 1889, a judge ruled that Edison's electric light improvement claim for "a filament of carbon of high resistance" was valid. In 1896 Italian inventor Arturo Malignani (1865-1939) patented an evacuation method for mass production, which allowed obtaining economic bulbs lasting 800 hours. The patent was acquired by Edison in 1898. In 1897, German physicist and chemist Walther Nernst developed the Nernst lamp, a form of incandescent lamp that used a ceramic globar and did not require enclosure in a vacuum or inert gas. Twice as efficient as carbon filament lamps, Nernst lamps were briefly popular until overtaken by lamps using metal filaments. - Metal filament, inert gas Edward Weston (May 9, 1850 - August 20, 1936 ) 'etc.

This video was about one man, The video wasn't called the history of they electric lamp, and the video does not say Latimer invented the light bulb or the carbon filament. It said he invent a Carbon filament not the Carbon filament, The video maker knows the its not the only one. Latimer also invented a lamp more than one of them. or he had patents for lamps, they were improvements. Swans lamp didn't have sufficient vacuum, Edison improved on the vacuums produced inside lamp, Latimer had a lot of respect for Edison. Respect to all the people you mentions I to have researched this, there is so much info on it, some info is conflicted but it comes together. between Edison, Latimer and Hyram Maxim and few other Americans they made to light bulb commercially viable. Latimer process of producing carbon filament was pivotal. I think the patents speak for themselves. I think your comment mentioned Edison buying up certain light lamp patents , so we see another complexity to this whole story. This video is just highlighting one person who doesn't get much of a mention in American history but im sure all the names could be made into short videos. History is taught in a way to make it simple, history create heroes, Edison was chosen to be hero of lighting.

History Of Air Conditioner and Refrigeration 1820 Ice was first artificially made as an experiment. 1824 Michael Faraday discovered the principles for the absorption type of refrigeration. 1834 Jacob Perkins invented the first artificial ice manufacturing machine which led to our modern compression systems. 1902 Willis Haviland Carrier invented the first air conditioner to control the temperature and humidity of a printing company, marking the first time effort taken to control the temperature of the surroundings. This starts the history of air conditioning. 1906 Stuart W. Cramer come out with the term "Air Conditioning." which was later adopted by Carrier. 1913 The first international refrigeration expo is held in Chicago. 1928 The discovery of Freon refrigerant by Thomas Midgley, Jr. 1930 The White House is air-conditioned. 1946 The demand for room air conditioners began to increase with more than 30,000 units produced on this year. 1953 Room air conditioners sale exceed 1 million units. This is another key milestone in the history of air conditioner. 1953 The Refrigeration Equipment Manufacturers Association and The Air-Conditioning and Refrigerating Machinery Association are formed. 1957 The first rotary compressor was developed hence making air conditioning units smaller and more efficient compared to the reciprocating type. 1977 Heat Pumps equipment developed that allows cooling and heating cycle using the same machine that can be used to provide cooling during summer and heating during winter. 1987 Montreal Protocol signed to protect the earth's ozone layer is signed in Montreal, Canada. The Protocol establishes international cooperation on the phase out of ozone depleting substances, including the chlorofluorocarbon(CFC) refrigerants used in HVAC equipment. 1990 Microprocessor control systems are used in all areas of refrigeration and air conditioning due to the readily available semiconductor technology. 1992 The R-22 Alternative Refrigeration Evaluation Program (AREP) starts to find alternative refrigerants to R-502 and R-22. 1995 Chloroflourocarbon (CFC) manufacturing in the USA ends on December 31. 1997 Kyoto Protocol signed to protect the earth's climate by reducing greenhouse gases that cause climate change. 1998 Unitary air conditioners and heat pumps set a sale record of more than 6 million units. 2007 A State Council issued a circular to restrict the temperature of air conditioning in public buildings to 26°C (78°F) or higher during summer and 20°C (68°F) and lower during winter. Sale of low efficiency air conditioning units are also outlawed.

Why the hate, the video didn't say he invented the light bulb, he invented a light bulb there were many types of light bulbs that were under different patents, didn't you see that in the video. maybe you need to watch again and look at the patent drawings. If you google it and go to images you will see the actual picture of one of the Latimer lamps, but if you look closer you will see one of his lamps has Hyram Maxim name also on it. Because Hyram appointed Latimer as chief engineer of his company. Hyram had great respect for Latimer. I understand you lack of observation, it taken me decades to come across all this information that ties it all together. Latimer suffered racism while working in his position but he was also loved. my understudying now is inventions are done by many and different variations are awarded patents, many patents are make up one complete products. This video is just highlighting one important person that was a part of the puzzle. We don't need to hate and curse.
