Strauss fell on the sword for the whole American people. There had to be somebody who was part of the bombs creation who could tell us with confidence that its creators were not wizards or gods. We couldn't live under that fear, we smacked down Oppenheimer and the old guard and we kept on making bigger bombs, the french figured it out when Oppenheimer said they didn't have the mathematic foundation. Strauss did have to lie and act like a malicious beast that Oppenheimer was gonna turn spy for the soviets, but it was necessary. The man in this movie and real life sold himself to the public as a real life ghoul, Strauss cut his nuts off.

Honestly, I'd say it's the opposite. While Lewis is later shown in the movie to have more self serving motives, it would be foolish (even a little ignorant) to place this all on his shoulders and relieve Oppenheimer of his own actions. As Oppenheimer did cause a lot of things by himself that really can't be blamed on Lewis. The way I view it is that there were no good guys or bad guys, but a bunch of flawed people who let their own desires, hubris and egos get in the way.

*Spoiler:* Nolan was so careful about initially revealing the legitimate reasons Strauss would have for not taking a liking to Oppenheimer, and RDJ gives such a measured, sympathetic performance that we feel for him with these snubs (one deliberate, most small and unwittingly given) Oppenheimer is dishing out; as the film chugs along, though, we see the more troubling aspects of Strauss's character begin to peak out, and by the end, we witness how his deep narcissism, vindictiveness, and paranoia has allowed what should be a small, personal distaste to completely control him to the point of trying to ruin another man's life. Unlike what would happen today, these personality traits and actions justly deny him a high position in public office. Great stuff.

it’s one of the best exchanges in the film in my opinion, due to how much it’s a microcosm of both characters oppenheimer, stumbling through life with the vaguest of good intentions, manages to carelessly spit out a poor attempt at a compliment, not even considering the consequences it may have while strauss, so concerned with his own self-image and reputation, immediately assumes the remark is an attack on him and defensively rushes to respond in to the perceived slight

I was in the midst of reading the 48 loss of power by Robert Greene by the time I saw Oppenheimer for the first time. It blew me away how much from the book applied to Strauss’s actions and motivations. From Kitty’s lines like “the truly vindictive have the patience of a saint” to his own line like “power stays in the shadows” was really incredible to see how a lot of the book’s laws played out on screen.

Strauss was correct. There was a mole in New Mexico and knowledge spread to Russia because of the open discussions. And he was also right to advocate for the monitoring of isotope trades globally in the new era. And the Americans totally needed a H bomb. But it was his vindictiveness and pettiness that lead to his downfall. He thought it was all about him, when Oppenheimer was barely thinking about him. It but him later at the hearing

I love how when he says at the end, “Something more important . . .” and it’s not explicitly stated, but I think what he’s saying is “Something more important than YOU.” Strauss’s ego and imagined perception of Oppenheimer turning the scientific community against him made it his personal mission to take him down by any means necessary, even if it wasn’t ethical. And now he’s on the other end of things, because the scientific community doesn’t want someone like him in a powerful position because of his ego and viciousness out of an imagined slight. And now this guy truly sees Strauss for what he is, and gets that last cold line in before removing Strauss’s ability to rebuke him. No one does characters with big egos like RDJ.
@RyanW2763
@RyanW2763 Ай бұрын
To play the devil's advocate, Strauss had some validity in his actions. Think about it. The day Lewis Strauss met Oppenheimer, he was undermined, disrespected, and disregarded by Robert. And the real crack of the whip? Oppie did it all without even noticing what he was saying or doing. Strauss' ego absolutely shines however when Robert sets aside the question regarding what he said to Einstein, but theres so much more to this matter then that. Post-War Robert was truly a confusing sight to see. A man who advocated so much for the building of a bomb now wanted to put as Strauss said "The genie back in the bottle". All the while Oppie was unbelieveably careless and lenient with the exportation of resources to foreign nations that could lead to nuclear innovation. While the ego of Lewis Strauss pretty much fueled this fire, he wasn't exactly wrong in the idea that Oppenheimer should not have had a say in matters of national security.

Strauss had thin skin and took things personally. Oppenheimer only defended his convictions, he paid the consequences of not being more politically savvy. Only one is and will be remembered by mankind.
