How to think about painting.

Working with mixed media using a variety of different paints. I work rapidly but build up the paintings in layers to make sketches that can be referenced in studio paintings.
Lewis Noble has lived and worked in Derbyshire since 1996. His focus lies in the physical and emotional impact of the landscape on the senses and the effect this experience has on us.
His paintings are not snapshots or photographic frozen moments but through repeated layering and eroding of the painted surface, they contain all of the time it takes to make them.
The result is a body of work that speaks to the heart of what it means to be part of the environment.

I'm watching this video for the first time today. I've already watched/listened to it twice. One of the things that I really enjoyed and connected with was the way you explored your process by showing and telling. It's so helpful and useful to me to hear your thoughts as you're creating and recreating. In that way the video feels like an expose of the creative process; it also remind me of underpainting, how as artists we are always looking and trying to see what's present and what's waiting to be revealed. I just came back from Donegal, in the northwest of Ireland, fantastic scenery and so many shapes, colours, textures and I didn't know how to put that together in a way that is not predictable. And thank you for the tour of your studio. One question, do you use Woody pencils in your paintings? If you do, how do you seal Them? As they are watersoluble. Thank you.
