ABOUT LEWIS NOBLE
'Working with mixed media using a variety of different paints. I work rapidly but build up the paintings in layers to make sketches that can be referenced in studio paintings.'
Lewis Noble has lived and worked in Derbyshire since 1996. His focus lies in the physical and emotional impact of the landscape on the senses and the effect this experience has on us.
His paintings are not snapshots or photographic frozen moments but through repeated layering and eroding of the painted surface, they contain all of the time it takes to make them.
The result is a body of work that speaks to the heart of what it means to be part of the environment.

Thank you! Paint is just paint, it's what you do with it that counts. I try to use different paints for their specific qualities (opaque/transparent etc) rather than how they're 'supposed' to be used.

In my ignorance i had somehow thought that a whole painting was done in one type of paint! So this was a complete revelation. Goin to order some water colour and gouache! Thanks so much for enlightening me! Best R

Try aquacryl by lascaux. They also have a gouache It’s hybrid watercolor acrylic. Best of both. Also apply sizing or clear gesso to keep colors brighter

Lewis, love your work and videos. Can you give more detail on buying pva. Looked on Blick site but I don’t know how to narrow down what to buy. It is probably something Ican buy at our local craft store or hardware stores. Thank you. Found you via Louise Fletcher.

Excellent tutorial, Lewis. I am very interested by your integration of the three different water-based mediums. What are your considerations for adhesion - particularly for the gouache? How do you protect against flaking when dry?

I've been thinking about mixing paints recently, so this video was very timely! One question: If you like the effects of the watercolor paint, and want to keep it, have you ever covered the area with a gloss medium? I would think it would allow that area to become un-mixable. Thank you Lewis!

Hi Lewis - as always an interesting video! You mention the need with 'pure' watercolour to maintain highlights and light areas (working always from light to dark) but one thing you demonstrate very well (but don't discuss) is the ability when using opaque paint to recover highlights even over dark paint. In theory when working in acrylic, you could start with BLACK paper and work towards the lightest areas. You could never do that with pure watercolour.

Great looseness and confidence building up these layers. Do you think you could achieve the same effect using black gouache instead of acrylic ? Thank You
@LewisNobleArtist
@LewisNobleArtist 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you could get good results with gouache but they're very different paints. Acrylics will dry permanently and work fluid as well as impasto. Gouache never dries to a point where you can't re wet it and is designed to be used as flat colour. I think the best thing to do is experiment and use different paints for their specific qualities. Thanks for watching!

Do you apply some sort of varnish or acrylic glaze over your finished pieces to seal? If yes, does adding that layer change the watercolor portions at all?

Hello, I really enjoyed this demonstration thank you! I wondered what kind of paper do you use in this? And is it the same kind of paper you use in your en plein air paintings, as it seems quite robust and not textured like some watercolour papers? Thank you

Hi Lewis. I absolutely love your videos and I have just booked on the course you are going to run at Coverack in October. This video is great and I just wondered if you could tell me please where you buy the blue roll of paper from. I'm on Louise Fletcher's course at the mo, and she tells us her supply comes from America - I do hope that you buy yours from the UK :) Bee
